Pedro de la Rosa is not a great fan of Monaco, and his weekend got off to the worst possible start when he crashed at the first part of Portier, the right hander after the hairpin. However, it was not a case of driver error; he was caught out by a mechanical problem. "I was about to come into the pits at the end of the first run, and the throttle stuck open," he said. "That's it, these things happen."

Pedro had run only nine laps, and had not yet set a representative time. The front left corner, wing and left bargeboard were all damaged, and by the time the car was returned to the pits the team had around 40 minutes in which to repair the damage before the next session started.

Pedro was ready to roll just before the end of the session, but another technical glitch was discovered and it was decided not to send him out again. "They got the car ready with 10 minutes to go, but then they had a problem with the power steering. We didn't want to risk it as we were not confident enough that it would work perfectly after a quick fix.
