© Ubaid Parkar (Sportz Interactive), 28 May 2010 © www.sauber-motorsport.com Pedro de la Rosa made a return to Formula One this year since he last raced in 2006 with the McLaren team. The Spaniard has had tons of experience with the Woking-based outfit as a test driver and is one of the few drivers who top the testing kilometers in Formula One; an asset in the realms of the sport. F1PULSE.com caught up with the BMW-Sauber driver in an exclusive chat to know his views on his current season.

You managed to make a return to Formula One after a gap of 3 seasons. However, things have not been as well as you would have hoped. How hard has it been?

Its been very interesting. Its been a difficult start to the season because I have finished only one out of the six races so far. Its not good but its also been very interesting that we have managed to develop the car in the meantime. We are in a better position now than we were at the beginning. Weve learned a lot in these few races. Hopefully, now we can start taking off finishing races, getting points and having a better remaining two-thirds of the season. Its been difficult but its still been a lot of fun. There is no reason to complain about it.

After out of F1 for 3 seasons, what challenges do you see for yourself?

As a driver, you are constantly learning in this profession. Every lap you do in a car, you become stronger and you go quicker, thats my point of view. You learn how top setup a car, what it needs to go faster, you learn how to deal with people, engineers and mechanics in a better way. You also learn how to make a car quicker in a very short time. This is the biggest challenge of a Formula One driver. To be adaptable and to be very fast - learning new tracks, new corners, problems and handling issues in a very short time. This is the biggest challenge of a Formula One driver.

You raced with Arrows and Jaguar in your career where getting points was a difficult task. How do you see your situation today with Sauber from that perspective?

Formula One is always a difficult business. Its never easy. The fact that I have been in very different teams have made me stronger. I learnt an awful lot being with McLaren. And I can say I am a lot more complete now when I joined McLaren because I learned things from them. And I learnt what a team needs to be competitive. How hard you work on every area. This is my bag of experience and this is one of the reasons why I am here. You learn on the way. The important message is you have to learn, you have to keep learning. Otherwise, you dont become useful anymore.

Since your car has managed to finish only one race so far, has the lack of track time affected you to adjust to the car?

Weve missed a lot of kilometres so far and that isnt good, especially since we have had some reliability issues. If we had finished the first few races, we would have cured them. Because you have no in-season testing, racing alone gives you a lot more information to improve the car. It hasnt helped our weak points, it hasnt helped develop the car or solve the reliability issues because of the lack of testing in F1.

Obviously, there is an ongoing effort to improve the car. How long do you expect the team to get up to speed?

We are not sure how competitive we are in the races because I have only finished one race out of six. I need to finish more races to get a clear picture of where we are. We believe we have made a big step forward since Barcelona when we introduced some changes in the car. Our aim always should be to finish in the points. If we manage to finish in Q3 in qualifying or close to Q3, then we can score points during the races. That is victory for us at the moment.

Which team do you hope to catch up or better by the end of the year? Is there a target?

No, not yet. We are trying to see where we are. We are trying to get points and then see who is in front and behind and fight for it. We are not thinking of the championship position yet. We are more into trying to find our limit really.

During the pre-season testing, the car looked competitive. Is it surprising then that those results have not materialised in the races?

© AP Images A lot of teams then were testing with more fuel than us. We were on lighter fuel loads. We should not underestimate how much improvements and developments other teams introduced before Bahrain. Weve been playing catch up since. Weve tried to introduce changes, we had an aero-package in Barcelona, and we are more now where we should have been in Bahrain. We should not underestimate our competition. They worked very well and they took very big steps during the few weeks gap between testing and Bahrain.

There were reports that your seat with the team was in trouble. Your comments.

I have nothing to say really. For me this is only rumours. For me the important thing is what Peter Sauber tells me. We talk a lot about it. I have full confidence in him and thats all that matters. We have to work as a team and not let the rumours affect us. I am not concerned about it, to be honest.

How do you expect the car to perform this weekend? Do you expect to finish the race?

Yes, sure. Weve been extremely unlucky at the beginning of this year. We had many failures which, lets say, are not common. Thats why Im optimistic that we can finish this race. Actually, we should! The moment we finish a race, well start rolling. We will start finishing a lot more.

INTERVIEW-Motor racing-De la Rosa refuses to be downcast
Fri May 28, 2010 11:17am BST

By Alan Baldwin

Motor Sports

ISTANBUL, May 28 (Reuters) - Pedro de la Rosa sounds more like a man riding the crest of a wave than a Formula One driver who has finished only one of six races this season and failed to score a single point.

The Spaniard, back on the starting grid with Sauber at the age of 39 and after four years' absence, has racked up three retirements and a non-start from his last four races.

His best result was 12th place in Australia in March, the second race of the season, and yet he sees no reason to be downcast.

"It's been a difficult start to the year but I am terribly optimistic and I am terribly happy about the fact that I am racing again, and in a good team and that every two weekends we have a new challenge in front of us," he told Reuters in an interview at the Turkish Grand Prix.

"For me it's very important to have fun, to enjoy driving again, to work with the team, to wake up in the morning with a challenge," continued the former McLaren test driver who raced previously for that team, Jaguar and Arrows in a career dating back to 1999.

"This is the whole point of life to me...so that's why I am extremely optimistic still and we should not get downbeat just because the first six races have been bad. The potential of this team is high, no matter if the car is right or not."

De la Rosa said Sauber should not change their attitude or way of working because sooner or later the results would come.

TEST PACE

The lack of race pace has come as a surprise after the team, Ferrari-powered despite having former partners BMW still part of their official name, looked highly competitive in pre-season testing.

The discrepancy has led some observers to accuse them of deliberately sending out a smokescreen to attract sponsors, much as the now-failed Prost team did some years previously.

De la Rosa denied that, saying Sauber had been genuinely taken aback to discover just how far behind they were and blamed two main factors.

"Firstly our competitors made huge steps between February and Bahrain (the season-opener in March)," he said. "New aero packages were introduced every week and the performance gains were huge.

"On the other side, we were testing with less fuel than other people but not knowing it. We were not doing it to look quick, we just generally didn't know that a lot of people were with heavier fuel loads than us. And that's it. Full stop."

Sauber, with a white car bereft of sponsorship, have less resources to compete with the likes of Red Bull and McLaren but a new aerodynamics package introduced in Spain this month improved matters.

De la Rosa, who last raced in Turkey for McLaren in 2006 when he finished fifth, looked forward to a better showing on Sunday.

"It's a circuit that is more in line with Barcelona and we were pretty competitive in Barcelona," he said. "So we should be a lot closer and it's a circuit I really like."

Before the season, the veteran had expressed concern that he did not know how long it would take to shake off the 'rust' built up over the previous years.

In fact, he said it had been far easier than expected.

"It took me maybe a couple of proper tests, Valencia and then Jerez to actually start feeling comfortable in the car," he explained.

"I then went to Barcelona for the last test before Bahrain and felt very comfortable, went to Bahrain and it was really nice and everything was flowing in the car.

"But for me the moment of truth was in Monaco last week," he continued.

"I am not a fan of Monaco, I don't like it, I think it's too dangerous...but it was the first time I really enjoyed driving there and this is only possible if you have no rust at all."
