-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ferrari, McLaren and BMW didn’t show their cards Who has hidden their game better? The teams that are contenders to win in Australia hidden their game in the last big testing session before the start of the season. Both Ferrari and McLaren, but also BMW, didn’t do the slightest attempt to put laptimes that would impress their opponents, therefore last week’s tests ended up with Trulli topping the times, beating Hamilton, while Coulthard and Rosberg got the following places. To find the first Ferrari, Raikkonen’s, we have to go down until we reach the ninth time of the week, while Massa was only 13th, behind even Fisichella’s Force India, and the visiting Schumacher got the 15th time, more than 1,6s second behind Trulli. As for the BMW drivers, Kubica was the quickest with the 14th time of the week, while Heidfeld only got the 19th place in the times table, which shows well how far the germans also hidden their game. Ferrari remains stronger With the top constructors revealing little about the team’s momentum, it was necessary to observe closely the Grand Prix simulations to get a better picture on the ability of each car and driver two weeks before the World Championship starts. And it was again very clear that Kimi Raikkonen is the strongest right now, even if his only Grand Prix simulation was briefly interrupted by a gearbox problem, after only six laps. But when the finnish came back to the track he shown an impressive rhythm, so much that his best lap of the week was the last lap of his “Grand Prix”. No-one else could lap in under 1m22s in race conditions, but Raikkonen managed 1m21,7s in his best lap, after having done the final laps of his simulation around 1m21,9s. Without the new aerodynamics, but with new mechanical components, namely in the hydraulic system and in the gearbox, Massa did two Grand Prix simulations, and if the first had on average times 0,3s slower than Raikkonen’s, the second was not so good, with the brazilian complaining about having to pass many slow drivers in most of the laps, but also admitting to commit some mistakes. Hamilton isn’t far In McLaren both MP4/23 were also in different configurations, with Hamilton testing more new aero bits – namely a new rear wing. Both drivers did short stints, lapping with less fuel than usual despite being far from running on qualifying conditions, so it was also in the longer stints that we saw the true potential of McLaren. In these conditions it was Hamilton who impressed more. The englishman did his only Grand Prix simulation of the week at the same time Massa was doing a similar attempt (his second and worst attempt), being consistently quicker than Ferrari’s driver. Hamilton ran in similar times to Massa’s previous day race simulation, but was also far from the times Raikkonen put in his last day of work. Big fight for third place The fight for third place between constructors seems to have opened itself to five teams, even if the general consensus is that BMW and Williams have an advantage over their rivals. But Toyota, Red Bull and Renault aren’t very far, which anticipates a very emotive fight for the last six available places between the top 10 in qualifying, and the last four points-scoring places in the initial part of the championship. In Barcelona it was Trulli who amazed everyone by being clearly the fastest on track, but if the italian admitted to have ran in qualifying conditions, there was an idea on the air that his TF108 was below the minimum weight when he scored the 1m20,801s lap, because out of the blue the veteran driver removed half a second from his best time until then. The fact Glock was 1,3s away from team-mate reinforced that idea, but by observing the track we got the idea that the TF108 has evolved a lot and if Trulli already found a good setup for his chassis, the GP2 champion is yet to find the best setup tweaks for his driving style. In Williams the new aero package was only available on the last two days of testing, but Rosberg was again impressive in the shorter lap stints. On the other hand, for once, their speed in race conditions was clearly inferior to Ferrari and McLaren, even if the german and Nakajima kept running in competitive times. BMW’s consistency Who only ran in race conditions was BMW, since their F1.08 cars always went to the track with 60 kilos of fuel on board. This means that in qualifying conditions (with only eight kilos on board), their drivers could’ve been 1,6s quicker than the case, leaving in the air the idea that the german cars are right now the third most competitive of the pack. In Red Bull it was Coulthard who ran more with the new aero bits, despite Webber having tested them in the day the scottish driver had to rest (see separate news), and the team liked the improvements in development. Now in Renault, the new bits tried by Alonso ended up being discarded for the last testing afternoon, leaving the idea that they didn’t work on track as the team expected, which might justify the more pessimistic words by the spaniard, which we have a separate news story for. Finally, Toro Rosso had only one car with new mechanical bits, showing itself more reliable than in the previous tests, while Honda did many kilometres and tested new wings and deflectors, without, however, managing to develop in a clear way the little competitive RA108. written by Luís Vasconcelos in Montmeló Team Mclaren Mercedes. contacto: flyinfinn2@hotmail.com [/b] -------------------- Team Mclaren Mercedes.

Stepney critical of his handling by the FIA
By Biranit Goren Saturday, March 8th 2008, 15:30 GMT Nigel Stepney has welcomed the FIA's announcement that it cannot official sanction the former Ferrari mechanic, but he slammed the governing body for its handling of his affair over the past six months. The FIA said yesterday it could not ban Stepney from working on motor racing, since he is not a sanctioned license holder. Nevertheless, the governing body issued a recommendation to all its license holders to consider carefully if they should collaborate with the Briton prior to July 1st 2009. Reacting to the FIA's statement, Stepney said today he was "delighted that the FIA have backed down" from their threat to ban him from motorsport but criticised the fact it took the FIA several months to reach this conclusion. "They may want to do some due diligence themselves before simply accepting one side of the story," Stepney said in a statement released by his lawyers in the UK. According to the statement, Stepney himsef "admits that a former McLaren engineer and friend of 20 years had obtained very limited information as a result of his carelessness". "Frankly, I should have known better," Stepney was quoted as saying. "But it sure as hell wasn't the 780-page dossier the FIA saw, and which I've just been shown for the first time by the Italian authorities." Stepney is under criminal investigation in Italy for suspected industrial espionage against his then-employers Ferrari, but the veteran mechanic has maintained throughout his innocense in the matter, denying he gave McLaren then-chief desiger Mike Coughlan a dossier of 780 pages, containing confidential Ferrari information. Sian Nath, of Stepney's UK law firm Coyle White Devine, said: "It should be noted that Mr Stepney has never admitted any dishonest intention. The FIA is fully aware of that. "Our client blew the whistle on certain matters to FIA officials; that is not in any contention. The Italian authorities were made aware of this last month; they, too, accept his position." Stepney himself said he was particularly frustrated by the fact that he wrote in detail to FIA president Max Mosley in August last year, and that the FIA has not met with him or since. Stepney denied the FIA's statement, which said he had admitted to passing Ferrari secrets to McLaren employees and apologised for it. "It'll all come out in the book," said Stepney, who plans to release his autobiography later this year. "Right now, I'm getting on with the job that's been my life and enjoying my family, who've suffered enormously and stood by me throughout, in peace." |

Reverse F1 grids - Williams boss By Andrew Benson Williams co-owner Patrick Head Head believes radical ideas need to be explored on overtaking A radical idea to improve the spectacle of Formula One and make overtaking easier has been proposed by Williams team co-owner Patrick Head. The veteran says races can be boring and wants the fastest cars to start at the back and the slowest at the front. "I would like to see the grids in reverse order of championship position," Head told BBC Sport. "It's the same for everybody, and over a whole season the right guy would still win the championship." Interview: Williams team co-owner Patrick Head Head, who has been involved in F1 for more than 30 years and is one of the most respected engineers in the sport, admitted that his idea would "very much upset the purists". But he said current proposals to facilitate overtaking and improve the spectacle were unlikely to work - and that governing body the FIA was "going to need to be a bit more adventurous". If you line the cars up with the fastest at the front and the slowest at the back, why should there be any overtaking? Patrick Head Co-owner Williams team Previous attempts to improve overtaking have failed. The most adventurous of these was forbidding refuelling between qualifying and race, opening up the possibility of position changes in the race because of differences in race strategy. But, in practice, the strategies tend not to vary significantly among the leading teams, and any changing of position that takes place as a result happens in the pits not on the track. For 2009, the FIA has introduced another series of changes - including a "boost" button to provide a brief burst of extra power, and changes to the aerodynamics to make it easier for one car to follow another closely. But Head, speaking ahead of the start of the new season in Australia on Sunday, said: "I still have to ask the question that if you allow the guys to do all this practice and testing and then you line them up with the fastest at the front and the slowest at the back, why should there be any overtaking? "Maybe overtaking will be less difficult, but if a guy is back there because by virtue of his own or his car speed he is 0.3 seconds slower than the car in front, why should he overtake [it]?" 606: DEBATE What do you think of Head's idea? Head admitted that there would likely be several objections to his idea. "[There would be the question of] how you would deal with it at the first race," he said. "And the fastest drivers might say: 'Well, overtaking is a risk and it puts us more at risk than the guys who don't have to do that.' "I'm sure people would complain about it. "But I do accept that Formula One is rather a purist's activity, and I do come across a lot of people who say they like watching motorbikes [more] and I have to say I'm a little bit in that camp because there isn't a lot of overtaking in Formula One. Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen leads McLaren's Lewis Hamilton Overtaking is notoriously difficult in Formula One "What's really boring is if there's a car that's genuinely faster sitting on the tail of the car in front and his race is destroyed. "We've had some races at Monaco where people have been held up for 30 or 40 laps when they've been a second or two faster than the car in front, and I think that's a pity." That view is largely at odds with that of FIA president Max Mosley, who has in the past likened the strategic complexity of Grands Prix to chess matches. Mosley has said that overtaking is a little bit too difficult - but he argues that if it was made too easy that would also be a bad thing because the drama of passing moves would be removed by them becoming ordinary. As evidence that his proposal would work, Head pointed to the 2005 Japanese Grand Prix, which has been hailed as arguably the greatest single race in F1 history. The fastest cars qualified well down the field because of a rain shower in qualifying. That led to a dramatic race that included Fernando Alonso passing Michael Schumacher around the outside in a 180mph corner, and which climaxed when Kimi Raikkonen won thanks to an overtaking move on the last lap. Head said his proposal had not come out of the blue - and was not motivated by the Williams team's fall from the position of dominance they enjoyed in the 1980s and 1990s. "I've suggested [it] to the FIA in the past when they've been talking about biasing overtaking - and I've made those suggestions at times when Williams have been winning races," he said. |

Dennis set to arrive in Australia
“There are things I have to sort out in my life” 11/03/08 09:51 Days before the new season kicks off, McLaren boss Ron Dennis appears no closer to stepping down. The general consensus in motor racing circles that the 60-year-old veteran's days as the Mercedes-powered Team's Principal are numbered. But Dennis insists that the decision to stop and hand over to his deputy Martin Whitmarsh will be his alone. "I'm not sure when that will be," the Briton told the Independent newspaper this week. Dennis is due to arrive in Australia for the 2008 season opener on Thursday or Friday, but it is clear that he will not be making too many more trips to Grand Prix circuits as team boss. "There are things I have to sort out in my life and I am in the process of doing that. I am 60 years old, and there are many other things I want to do outside Formula One," he added.
