Luego de varios años de desavenencias que provocaron la división de el más importante campeonato de monoplazas estadounidense, finalmente se llegó a un acuerdo para fusionar este año la Champ Car a la Indy Racing League (IRL), acuerdo en el que sin duda se beneficiaran los aficionados a estos bólidos.


Los dirigentes de las series de automovilismo de monoplazas estadounidenses Indy Racing League (IRL) y Champ Car anunciaron un acuerdo para fusionar ambos circuitos con vistas a la temporada 2008, 12 años después de haberse separado.

El acuerdo se encamina a incorporar tres carreras de la Champ Car al itinerario original de la IRL, que contaba con 16 pruebas, con los grandes premios de Long Beach en California, Surfers Paradise en Australia y Edmonton en Canadá. El resto del calendario de Champ Car fue cancelado. A comienzos de la década de 1990, la serie CART, que luego cambió de nombre a Champ Car, era un destino habitual para pilotos europeos y sudamericanos, y tenía gran respaldo de los aficionados.

La CART fue fundada en noviembre de 1978 por Roger Penske, Pat Patrick, Dan Gurney y otra serie de dueños de escuderías.

La IRL comenzó a operar en 1996, con intención de dar espacio a los jóvenes pilotos estadounidenses, y CART tomó su propio rumbo hasta que se declaró en bancarrota en enero de 2004.

George realizó la mejor oferta por las acciones de CART, pero un juez se las otorgó a Kalkhoven, Forsythe y Paul Gentilozzi porque el comprador había mostrado intenciones de clausurar la serie, lo que hubiera dejado a muchas personas desempleadas.



Monoplaza.

Los coches de las series IndyCar son monoplazas de al menos 1525 libras de peso y 192 pulgadas de longitud, con chasis monocasco y construidos con fibra de carbono y composite. Son coches con cambio de 6 velocidades secuanciales por palanca (no por levas) y sin dirección asistida.
Los equipos pueden elegir entre 2 modelos de distintos fabricantes, bien sean los italianos Dallara o los americanos Panoz.





El Motor de 3.5 litros V8 turboalimentados desarrollados por Honda (y construidos por Ilmor Engineering, compañía constructora de los motores Mercedes-Benz en F1 hasta 2005), capaces de transmitir más de 650 CV usando como combustible Etanol-Metanol.







Los neumáticos son gomas son slick, con una grosor de la goma como el deaproximadamente 2.5 milímetros de espesor. Las dimensiones son 25.8 las delanteras pudiendo llegar hasta las 28 en las ruedas traseras. Los anchos: 28 centímetros alante y 38 atrás.

Cada piloto dispone segun el tipo de circuitode 8 sets para Urbano/permanente y 7 sets para Ovales. En Indy 500 dispone de 35 sets.



Street Tire / Race Tire



Hay dos tipos de Frenos dependiendo de si corren en un óvalo o en un circuito urbano. En el caso del óvalo, los frenos son de carbono con cuatro pistones, y son más bien pequeños. En el caso del circuito urbano, los discos son de acero, más grandes y de 6 pistones.

Se otorgan 3 puntos extras a aquel piloto que consiga el mayor número de vueltas en cabeza durante la carrera.


Repostajes.



Las paradas en boxes son también obligatorias en las IndyCar Series. Sin embargo, no se podrán realizar cuando la condición de la pista esté en "peligro", es decir, haya banderas amarillas y un coche de seguridad en el circuito, salvo que el dirigente de la carrera de la orden de "Pits Open". Todo aquel que haga una parada en esta situación será penalizado.

En una parada de boxes podemos encontrar a 11 mecánicos. 4 se encargarán de sustituir las ruedas, 2 de ayudarles, uno sujetará el "chupete" o cartel de indicación de estado, 1 del respostaje junto a su ayudante y 1 mecánico se encargará de elevar el coche.
El último, quizás el más curioso, es el que hace de "apagafuegos". Tras un respotaje, una vez retirada la manguera, él inyectará un chorro de agua sobre la boca del depósito para aplacar las posibles llamas. Recordemos que el metanol se apaga con agua y su llama es completamente invisible (de ahí que se realice siempre este procedimiento, tanto si hay llama o no).


El Volante

1. OVERTAKE BUTTON: Changes the fuel map to 100 percent rich for a set amount of time, allowing the engine to produce the extra power needed to complete a pass or hold off another driver.

2. PI DASH: Displays warning lights and information the driver needs during the race. That information includes lap times, oil, water and gearbox temperatures and fuel mileage.

3. RPM SHIFT LIGHTS: LED lights that go from green to red and indicate engine RPM. When the red lights are on the driver shifts gears.

4. PIT LANE SPEED LIMITER: Used on pit lane by the driver to activate the engine control program limiting the cars speed to the pit lane speed limit, which is usually 60 miles per hour.

5. PULL-TO-TALK (BEHIND THE CARBON): Activates the microphone in the drivers helmet so he can communicate over the radio.

6. RESET: Used during the race. During a pit stop the driver pushes this button to reset the fuel reading on his display.

7. FUEL MAP SWITCH: Allows the driver to adjust the fuel mapping of the engine to increase fuel mileage or to increase power. There are a number of settings available including full rich, where the engine produces maximum power but uses more fuel. There is also a lean setting which uses less fuel but produces less power. During caution periods the drivers will switch to the leanest mixture to increase fuel economy.

8. DASH SCROLL: Allows the driver to scroll through the different pages available on the dash board, including the race page, qualifying page and practice page.

9. WEIGHT JACKER: Adjusts the cross weight on the car from left to right. The weight jacker allows the driver to make fine-tuning adjustments as the car begins to handle differently during the race.

10. DRINK (BEHIND THE CARBON): Allows the driver to get a drink of water during the race. It activates a pump connected to a water bottle on the car which pumps water through a hose installed in the drivers helmet.

Oriol Serviá correrá las 500 Millas de Indy


"La parte positiva es que por fin podré correr las 500 Millas de Indianápolis. Lo intenté en 2002 pero fue todo muy precipitado y no pudimos optar a la calificación", dijo Servià ayer en Florida en la rueda de prensa oficial de la unificación de los dos campeonatos IRL y ChampCar Desde hace tiempo, correr las 500 Millas era uno de sus sueños.

El piloto catalán tiene asegurada su participación en el nuevo campeonato que surge de la fusión de la IRL y la ChampCar. Esta última categoría prácticamente desaparece y los equipos de la misma que lo desean se integran en la IRL, el campeonato gestionado por Tony George e Indianápolis, pese a que ello les obliga a disponer de coches y motores nuevos. Afortunadamente, Tony George ha puesto a disposición de estos nuevos equipos los chasis Dallara en algunos casos son los de recambio de equipos de la IRL y Honda se ha puesto las pilas para ofrecerles motores. El calendario IRL puede tener 18 ó 19 carreras al incoporar algunas de la ChampCar como Australia o Long Beach.

"La unificación es muy importante de cara al futuro. Saldrá un campeonato reforzado que podrá competir con la NASCAR. Creo que en Estados Unidos buscaban una alternativa a la NASCAR, algo nuevo, y ahora los monoplazas se lo ofrecerán", explicó Servià, quien admite que el salto "es un perjuicio a corto plazo pero con enormes posibilidades de futuro. Nosotros teníamos equipo para estar delante en ChampCar y luchar por el título y soy consciente que en IRL ocuparemos posiciones retrasadas. No conocemos el coche ni el motor y nuestros rivales lo dominan perfectamente. Y además tendremos pocas oportunidades de rodar antes de la primera carrera. Sólo dos días en un oval y otros dos en un rutero. Es el peaje a pagar", dijo Servià, cuyo equipo ya ha recibido el primer chasis, "pero es muy difícil que este listo para los test de Sebring en una semana".

Servia paces final day at Sebring

SEBRING, Fla. -- Oriol Servia paced the final day of testing at Sebring International Raceway for teams and drivers transitioning to the IndyCar Series.

Six drivers completed 354 laps on the 1.7-mile, 11-turn circuit. The start of the day was delayed until noon after strong rains came through the area just before the scheduled start time of 9 a.m. The session also was interrupted for approximately 30 minutes in the afternoon when the No. 18 car driven by Bruno Junqueira made contact with the tire barrier in Turn 5. Junqueira was not injured.

Servia's fastest lap was 52.7035 seconds, 114.072 mph, besting his KV Racing Technology teammate Will Power by 0.2416 of a second. Servia completed 174 laps over the course of two days most of any of the drivers.

"Honestly, I don't think we should give that much importance to the lap times themselves just because there was just 12 hours of a thousand cars running here, so there's a lot of rubber," Servia said. "I am happy with the balance of the car. Yesterday, we tried some things and I didn't really like the car. But, today we tried some other things that really suit me and I like the car. We ended up fast. I'm very happy that both cars ran trouble-free over the two days. That's a big accomplishment."

The drivers and teams head to Homestead-Miami Speedway for testing under the lights on March 24-25. They will be joined on the oval by transitioning teams HVM Racing, Newman Haas Lanigan Racing and Roth Racing drivers Marty Roth and Jay Howard, who did not participate in the Open Test in February.

Oriol el mas rapido entre los ex-ccws






HOMESTEAD, Fla. Ernesto Viso thought a phone call from his manager March 19 was to extend 23rd birthday greetings. That was an afterthought actually as the call to Barcelona, Spain, was to invite the driver to the IndyCar Series.
"It was a good present," Viso said after completing two days of testing on the Homestead-Miami Speedway oval in preparation for the March 29 season opener.
Eleven drivers, including nine who are transitioning to the IndyCar Series from the Champ Car World Series, recorded 1,069 laps during five available hours on the 1.5-mile oval with a persistent and brisk westerly breeze (the two-day total reached 1,167). KV Racing Technology (Oriol Servia, Will Power), Conquest Racing (Enrique Bernoldi, Franck Perera), Dale Coyne Racing (Bruno Junqueira, Mario Moraes) and Newman/Haas/Laningan Racing (Graham Rahal, Justin Wilson) made use of every minute. Marty Roth and Jay Howard of Roth Racing also were granted track time because they did not participate in the full IndyCar Series oval Open Test in February.
Servia topped the speed chart of the migrating drivers at 25.4360 seconds (210.175 mph). Roth led the field at 25.1200 (212.818 mph). Dan Wheldon's 25.0619 (213.312 mph) was the quickest lap of 17 cars at the Feb. 27-28 Open Test.
The lone on-track incident over the sessions involved Rahal, whose No. 06 car made contact with the Turn 2 SAFER Barrier with two hours left. He was checked in the infield care center and cleared to drive.
"The car felt really good," said Rahal, who had a quick lap of 25.4920 seconds (209.713 mph) among his 35. "I caught Oriol and overtook him in Turn 1 and was almost past him. I was on a higher line than I had been taking and that was a lot bumpier with a little less grip up there. The rear stepped out on me and I caught it and then it did it a second time and I couldn't catch it and crashed it."
The next time out (March 28 practice and qualifying) for all drivers, it will be with considerably more traffic on the high-banked oval, at higher speeds and will determine their starting position for the GAINSCO Auto Insurance Indy 300.
Viso, who totaled xxx laps in the No. 33 HVM Racing car over the two days, acknowledged being "a little dizzy" initially on the track, which is analogous to the whirlwind since learning where he would be racing this year.
"Everything was quick," said Viso, who last year competed in the GP2 Series. "The 20th I was in Indy with a lot of jet lag. The 21st we were doing the seat fitting. The 22nd we flew here and rested (March 23). We started testing (March 24).
"At the start I was very tired because I was not breathing in the corners. Everything was like a video game. Once I did more and more laps, I got used to it. I'm still learning and will be learning in the coming races."
Even for a veteran with 27 oval starts, there's a learning curve.
"It would be tough even if we would have made the move in October," KV Racing Technology's Oriol Servia said. "There's nothing really to compare with the old Homestead (6 degrees of banking). In my head, (the 18- to 20-degree variably-banked track) feels more like Fontana and Michigan high banking, lot of speed, full throttle when you have new tires. We're learning so much with the car, but the race weekend is here soon. We don't have much time."
Time is a luxury since teams committed to the unified series competing under the IndyCar Series banner.
"Time is important; it is more than gold in racing," Viso said. "Time is also what we need outside the car. The guys did a perfect job to prepare the car in four days. They started from scratch."
Some crew members were scratching their heads during the testing days, waiting for delivery of parts and spares. And a 6-foot-3 driver just sought some comfort.
"We just have a few more bits to do inside the cockpit to make me feel more comfortable," Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing's Justin Wilson said. "Fitting in these cars is not a straight-forward thing."

EL problema esque combinado con los pasados tests al menos le falta tres o cuatro decimas. Aunque oriol comenta que los tiempos no se pueden comparar por la diferencia de temperatura.

Homestead Musings Part "Duh"


Cold (By South Florida standards) and windy. Cross-winds through the corners.

Very tense atmosphere. Teams are not happy. Not happy about the merger. Not happy about the rush to get ready for the race. And some not happy about the chassis they have acquired.

One Mechanic told me that the car that they received bends like a skateboard. A crew chief told me that there just wasn't enough time to get ready.

Was told that ticket sales are slower than last years, Yep. Merger is reaping benefits already.

Was weird to see the N/H/L McDonalds colors on a Dallara.

The Coyne People were still rushing to get Bruno's car together. Was finally finished until after the dinner break. Then he couldn't find a gear when the final session began.
Once the car was fixed Bruno quickly became smooth out there.

Interesting to see so many cars with noses and other parts that have pain schemes that are obviously from other teams.

Servia really impressed me. He was fast.

Wilson looked tentative.

I am really beginning to hate Oval racing for formula cars. We were on the roof of the Speedway when Graham backed into turn 2. For a second I was really worried but he emerged unscathed.
We got the whole thing on tape. Jeff, my main man, has a knack at following the car that will do something interesting. He was following Graham around for a few laps leading up to the crash and got it all on tape.
We took it to the N/H/L hauler and sat with Graham and his crew chief and went over the tape. He got loose in turn one passing Servia. When he corrected the car also bottomed out and lost grip which caused him to back into the wall in turn to. Pretty cool comparing the telemetry to the video.

The N/H/L guys will be working all tomorrow trying to put Graham's car back together for this weekend. Biggest problem.No Spare Parts.

KV RACING TECHNOLOGY QUALIFIES BOTH CARS FOR SEASON OPENING

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - - MARCH 28, 2008 - - KV Racing Technology began its inaugural IndyCar Series season by qualifying both cars for tomorrow's Gainsco Auto Insurance Indy 300 at Homestead Miami Speedway in Homestead, Florida.


Oriol Servia, KV Racing Technology #5 Honda/Dallara/Firestone, qualified 16th overall with an average speed of 209.021 mph on the 1.5-mile high-banked oval. Teammate Will Power, KV Racing Technology #8 Aussie Vineyards Team Australia Honda/Dallara/Firestone, who was making his first appearance on a big oval, will start 21st after averaging 208.029 mph.


KVRT, which received its first IndyCar chassis just three weeks ago and has only tested on an oval once, a two day test on March 24-25 here in Homestead, spent the first practice continuing the development work they began earlier this week. With the emphasis on learning, improving the car and getting track time, Power notched the team's fast lap during the one hour and 45 minute practice with a speed of 209.070 mph (25.570 seconds), which put him 19th on the speed charts out of a field of 25 cars. Servia, who is making his second appearance at Homestead in a high horsepower car, logged the 21st fastest lap with a speed of 208.695 mph (25.616 seconds).


In Friday's second practice, which was split into two groups each with 30 minutes of track time, the team again continued to focus on developing the car. Power went out with the first group and appeared to have an improved machine. Despite running a slower speed, 208.528 mph (25.636), than during the first session he was 15th on the speed charts for the session, but remained 19th on the combined report. Servia, who practiced with the second group, once again recorded the 21st fastest lap clocking a speed of 206.964 mph (25.830) as the team worked diligently to balance his car.


In qualifying Power went out eighth of the 26 cars for his first big oval qualifying session. Unfortunately, he could not find the speed and will start on Row #11. Servia, however, saved his best for last. Taking to the track 18th in the qualifying order he put together four very consistent laps, all easily his fastest of the day, and will start on Row #8.


Commenting on his qualifying effort and tomorrow's race Servia said, "Overall we are trying to learn in two days what other teams have learned in five years. I thought I had the best car that I've had all weekend in qualifying today, which is what you want. And tomorrow I am sure we will have an even better car. What I would like is a balanced consistent car for the race tomorrow like I had for qualifying today. For KVRT, we just want to get some speed, do some miles, learn the car and just have a consistent race tomorrow."


Power noted, "I was basically flat all the way round, I felt the KVRT Aussie Vineyard Team Australia car was improved from practice today, but we were lacking a little bit of pace. For me it is just about the race, get as many miles as I can, learn how to run in traffic while finding more out about the car."

Oriol Servià (KV Racing Technology) ha finalizado duodécimo en la primera carrera de la IndyCar Series, disputada en el circuito oval de Homestead, el mismo escenario donde el catalán inició el año 1998 su trayectoria deportiva en los Estados Unidos. Servià ha finalizado cuatro plazas por delante de la que había logrado el viernes en la calificación (efectuó su mejor vuelta a este trazado de 1,485 millas en 25,5436 segundos, a un promedio de 336,68 km/hora) y ha acreditado el mejor resultado entre los competidores procedentes de la Champ Car. El piloto del RACC ha sumado sus primeros puntos en este campeonato resultante de la fusión entre la IRL (Indy Racing League) y la Champ Car.

Servià ha cubierto las primeras vueltas a la expectativa, para tomar el pulso a lo que representa pilotar un coche que le era prácticamente desconocido (Dallara-Honda) en una carrera en circuito oval, rodando a más de 300 km/hora a pocos centímetros de los demás vehículos y entre los muros de protección. A partir de su primer 'pit-stop' (vuelta 20), en el que le ha sido reajustada la incidencia de los alerones delanteros, el gerundense ha empezado a ir a más, manteniéndose regularmente entre la 13ª y la 12ª plaza, esta última definitiva durante las últimas 60 vueltas.

Oriol Servià:
"Sabíamos que nos faltaba velocidad y que no sería fácil lograr un buen resultado; no podíamos esperar ningún milagro.
Y en estas condiciones hemos hecho lo que nos habíamos propuesto, mantener un ritmo consistente, terminar la carrera sin dañar el coche y obtener el mayor número posible de datos para poder comprender el monoplaza y trabajar en él cara al futuro. En general estoy satisfecho, el equipo ha trabajado en positivo y hemos dejado unos cuantos coches por detrás. Ha sido un primer paso entre los que debemos efectuar para poder acercarnos a los más rápidos".

Scott Dixon ha sido el vencedor de esta carrera, que ha tenido cinco líderes distintos y en la que Marco Andretti, nieto del mítico Mario Andretti, ha completado el mayor número de vueltas al frente (85).

La segunda carrera de la IndyCar Series se disputará el próximo domingo, día 6 de abril, en el circuito urbano de St. Petersburg (Florida).

Positivo fin de semana para Oriol Servià y su equipo, KV Racing Technology, en el Gran Premio de St. Petersburg, segunda prueba de la IndyCar Series. Al volante de un Dallara-Honda, el catalán ha finalizado séptimo en una carrera que ha arrancado bajo una intensa lluvia (las nueve primeras vueltas han sido neutralizadas tras el coche de seguridad) y acortada a 83 vueltas, 17 menos de las programadas, al agotarse el tiempo máximo de dos horas previsto por el reglamento.

El piloto del RACC ha aprovechado las adversidades iniciales para remontar desde la séptima posición que ha ocupado en la formación de salida hasta la tercera, plaza que ha mantenido desde la vuelta 20 hasta la 28, poco antes de efectuar la primera de las tres paradas en boxes para cambiar ruedas y repostar combustible.

Con el asfalto cada vez más seco, Servià se ha visto perjudicado en el segundo 'stint' por haber seguido utilizando neumáticos de lluvia, perdiendo unos cuantos segundos por vuelta respecto a quiénes se habían decidido por los 'slicks' y bajando hasta la 16ª posición antes de la segunda parada (vuelta 43).

A partir de aquel momento, el gerundense ha iniciado una recuperación que le ha llevado a estar entre los diez primeros en la vuelta 75. Servià ha llegado hasta el sexto lugar en la penúltima vuelta pero con los neumáticos bajo mínimos no ha podido defender la posición en el último giro.

Oriol Servià: [color="NAVY"] "Considero que ha sido un fin de semana muy positivo. El azar, en forma de lluvia al inicio, de banderas amarillas y de acierto en las estrategias, ha intervenido mucho en el desenlace de esta carrera. En este sentido, haber terminado séptimo es un resultado decente después de no haber acertado con los neumáticos cuando la pista se ha secado más rápidamente de lo que preveíamos. Lo más destacable es la mejora que el equipo ha hecho en relación a la carrera anterior y esto nos motiva mucho. En la calificación estuvimos a tan solo dos décimas de la 'pole' y en la carrera me he sentido muy a gusto con el coche. Vamos por el buen camino".
Graham Rahal ha sido el vencedor de esta carrera que ha tenido ocho líderes distintos y Helio Castroneves, segundo, es el nuevo líder de la clasificación general. La siguiente cita de la IndyCar Series será doble y obedecerá a los compromisos adquiridos por los anteriores campeonatos IRL y Champ Car antes de su fusión.

Los equipos de la IRL correrán el día 19 del presente mes de abril en el circuito oval de Motegi (Japón) y el día siguiente los de la Champ Car lo harán en el trazado urbano de Long Beach (California), donde competirán con los Panoz-Cosworth estrenados el pasado año. Las dos carreras puntuarán independientemente.

MOTEGI, Japan - Since exploding into the consciousness of an international audience at the 2005 Indianapolis 500, Danica Patrick has answered incessant questions of when she would win an IndyCar Series race.
Next question, please.
Patrick, competing in her 50th IndyCar Series race, became the first female to win a major auto racing event.

● The setting: The Indy Japan 300 on the Twin Ring Motegi oval.
● The scenario: Moving from ninth place on Lap 189, seeing leaders pit for a splash of fuel a few laps later and overtaking Helio Castroneves on Lap 198.
● The post-race scene: The sun broke through for the first time all weekend as Patrick made her way through a sea of well-wishers to the victory stage.

"Finally," Patrick said through tears before a victory lap to compose her thoughts. "This is a long time coming. It was a fuel strategy race, but my team called it perfectly for me. I know I was on the same strategy as Helio, and when I passed him for the lead I couldn't believe it. This is fabulous."

A few minutes later, fans streamed down the frontstretch grandstand to get a closer glimpse (and hopefully a snapshot) of the winner - proof they were witness to history and had the ability to return to the venue after the sixth annual race was postponed 22 hours because of rain.
"I've always said that I wouldn't do this, but on my last lap I was kind of just excited," said Patrick, 26. "And when I actually had to talk on my radio, finally the emotion came out. I really couldn't manage any other words than 'thank you.' And then I was as relieved as I expected I would be years ago, how I knew I would feel when I won my first race."

Patrick has come close before, including after starting on the front row at Twin Ring Motegi in her fourth IndyCar Series race in '05. She finished fourth and really captured the public's attention a month later by becoming the first female to lead the Indianapolis 500. Patrick finished fourth again, and over the next two-plus seasons (with Rahal Letterman Racing and now Andretti Green Racing) second place (at Belle Isle last September) had been the high-water mark.
"I've been asked so many times when I'm going to win my first race, and finally, no more of those questions."

No, they will turn to 'When can you win another?' starting with the RoadRunner Turbo Indy 300 at Kansas Speedway in a week.

"It feels like it's taken a long time," she continued. "I had a lot of opportunities last year that were missed due to bad luck. I can only say I'm just glad it's over."

Castroneves finished 5.8594 seconds behind and Scott Dixon was third. Dixon's Target Chip Ganassi Racing teammate, Dan Wheldon, finished fourth and Tony Kanaan was fifth. Vision Racing's Ed Carpenter, staring at a career-best finish, also had to pit and wound up sixth. Rahal Letterman Racing's Ryan Hunter-Reay was seventh and A.J. Foyt Racing's Darren Manning eighth.

Patrick, who competed in European junior formulas seeking her open-wheel racing break, returned to the States to compete in the Toyota Atlantic series in 2003 for Team Rahal. Co-owner Bobby Rahal gave her the opportunity in 2005. The move was met with some questions about a relatively inexperienced driver - and a female - competing in the premier North American open-wheel racing series.
"I think that the disadvantage to overcome was just that I hadn't won," Patrick said. "A lot of women hadn't really proved on a consistent basis that they could be a good driver and always run up front. I think there had been times when they had done well but not consistently.

"I can't tell you that I blame them for not believing that we could do it. But when you have 100 guys come through, finding one good one, the odds are a lot better than 100 girls since it takes a lot longer for 100 to come through. The odds are against us. But I grew up with never really using guys as a reference, using drivers as a reference, and if I wasn't fast enough, I wasn't fast enough. That was the most important thing."

The car was plenty fast enough at Twin Ring Motegi. Her team calculated the fuel mileage to the liter. And Patrick drove into history.

Long Beach (California, EUA), 19.04.2008.- Los problemas mecánicos han afectado a Oriol Servià (KV Racing Technology) en la segunda jornada de entrenamientos del Gran Premio de Long Beach, tercera cita de la IndyCar Series. El catalán, que el viernes había logrado el segundo mejor tiempo en la sesión de calificación, ha tenido que cambiar el motor de su Panoz-Coworth durante la sesión libre matinal después de que se le rompiera la bomba de aceite cuando rodaba de nuevo entre los más rápidos. En la calificación, el piloto del RACC no ha podido completar ni una sola vuelta a causa de la rotura del diferencial en el giro de instalación. De esta forma, Oriol Servià ha bajado de la primera fila que ocupaba en la formación provisional de salida hasta la sexta, siempre en función de su registro del viernes.
Oriol Servià: "Ha sido una lástima ya que el equipo había logrado un coche muy rápido, con plenas posibilidades de luchar por la 'pole'. Pero todos sabemos que los problemas mecánicos también forman parte de las carreras, donde se exige al máximo todos los elementos. A pesar de los contratiempos, no vamos a caer en el desánimo; el año pasado inicié esta carrera desde el decimocuarto lugar y la terminé segundo. A ver si esta vez, saliendo desde un poco más arriba, podemos acabar incluso mejor".

Oriol Servià (KV Racing Technology) ha logrado finalizar quinto en el Gran Premio de Long Beach, tercera cita de la IndyCar Series, tras remontar quince posiciones durante las 83 vueltas sobre el emblemático circuito urbano de 1,968 millas.

Con este resultado, el catalán ha cerrado un fin de semana que empezó con el segundo mejor tiempo en los entrenamientos oficiales del viernes y se alteró al día siguiente a causa de problemas mecánicos. El piloto del RACC ha ascendido una posición en la clasificación general del campeonato, en la que ahora es octavo, empatado a puntos con el séptimo.

La rotura del diferencial de su coche impidió a Oriol Servià defender el sábado la posición en la primera fila de la formación de salida que provisionalmente había conquistado el día anterior y, sin haber podido completar ni una sola vuelta en la segunda calificación, descendió hasta la duodécima plaza en la formación de salida.

El inicio de carrera tampoco ha sido favorable al gerundense, que tras calar el vehículo en la arrancada ha cerrado la primera vuelta en vigésima y última posición. A partir de allí, la remontada ha sido constante (en la vuelta 33 ya estaba entre los diez primeros), en función de un ritmo sólido, unos cuantos adelantamientos en la pista y una acertada estrategia en los pit-stops, y a pesar de nuevos problemas con el diferencial de su coche. Servià ha mantenido el ataque hasta el final y ha rematado la jugada al superar a Frank Perera en el último giro.

Oriol Servià: Ha sido un fin de semana raro, que empezamos muy bien pero se torció. Diría que hemos tenido mala suerte, ya que el coche era rápido y nos daba buenas expectativas, pero por otra parte también debo admitir que hemos tenido fortuna porque desde media carrera llevaba el diferencial abierto y podría haberse roto. Así que no me puedo quejar puesto que hemos salvado la situación.
Para el conjunto del equipo KV Racing ha sido mucho mejor, con la victoria de Will Power, un resultado que premia el trabajo y del que me alegro mucho. Lo que me duele es no haber podido subir también al podio, aunque lo que veo es que después de tres carreras estamos en una situación que habría firmado al inicio de temporada, y esto es lo que más vale.

Will Power (KV Technology) ha sido el vencedor de la carrera de despedida en público de la Champ Car, prueba que el australiano ha dominado de principio a fin. Los compromisos adquiridos por los organizadores antes de su fusión con la IRL para crear la IndyCar han comportado que en un mismo fin de semana haya habido dos carreras distintas con puntuaciones independientes. Los equipos y pilotos procedentes de la Champ Car han corrido en Long Beach con los Panoz-Cosworth estrenados en 2007.

Paralelamente, los procedentes de la IRL han competido con los Dallara-Honda en el circuito oval de Motegi (Japón), donde Danica Patrick (Andretti-Green Racing) ha logrado el triunfo. La cuarta prueba se disputará el próximo domingo en el oval de Kansas.

Oriol Servià (KV Racing Technology) ha finalizado undécimo en la cuarta carrera de la IndyCar Series, disputada en el circuito oval de Kansas, y sigue octavo en la clasificación general del campeonato.

El piloto del RACC ha remontado doce posiciones respecto de la que ha ocupado en la formación de salida de esta prueba en la que, aún cuando estableció su tiempo de calificación a un promedio de 336,7 km/hora, se ha visto afectado por la falta de velocidad de su Dallara-Honda en comparación con los vehículos más rápidos sobre este trazado de 1,5 millas.

Servià ha mantenido su línea habitual de iniciar la carrera a la expectativa y una vez superadas las siempre delicadas primeras vueltas ha empezado a ir hacia delante en función de un ritmo constante y de una buena planificación en las paradas para cambiar ruedas y cargar combustible. A partir de la vuelta 100 (media carrera) el catalán se ha situado entre los quince primeros y en los 50 últimos giros ha protagonizado una sólida defensa de la posición en qué ha cruzado la línea de meta.

Oriol Servià: "Hemos logrado mucho más de lo que podíamos esperar después de la calificación. El equipo ha hecho un trabajo excelente en los 'pit-stop' y con un poco más de suerte en las neutralizaciones habríamos cedido una vuelta menos al vencedor y hubiéramos podido estar con los diez primeros. Aún así, terminar undécimo después de haber salido desde tan atrás me ha dejado muy satisfecho. Y lo más importante es que el coche ha sido mejor que en Homestead, la anterior carrera en circuito oval. Nos ha seguido faltando velocidad pero lo hemos dejado mucho más equilibrado ya que lo entendemos mejor, y esto nos ha permitido seguir progresando".

Dan Wheldon ha sido el vencedor de esta carrera que ha registrado cinco cambios de líder, posición en la que Scott Dixon, su compañero de equipo, ha completado 145 vueltas. La quinta prueba de la IndyCar Series serán las míticas 500 Millas de Indianápolis, el día 25 de mayo y tras un completo programa de preparación durante todo el mes.

INDY 500: Rookie Quality and Quantity at ROP





It's the largest rookie crop since 1997 but there's as much quality as there is quantity in Gasoline Alley, and it showed Sunday afternoon. A dozen drivers let's label them first-timers instead of rookies completed 642 error-free laps at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on an opening day that saw 10 of them breeze through their four-phase driving test.

The daunting oval that's shaped the landscape of American motorsports for nearly 100 years offered no surprises or horror stories on a mild, sunny day.

"Surprisingly, I wasn't nervous at all," said 19-year-old Graham Rahal after taking only 34 laps to complete his test with a top lap of 218 mph. "I think if you get yourself all worked up about it, you get really nervous and then you makes mistakes.

"Obviously, it's great to get this ROP out of the way and I guess I didn't expect to go as fast as we did right away. But I'm a rookie so I don't know what to expect."

Teammates Will Power and Oriol Servia, who logged almost 100 laps apiece and topped 220 mph for the KV Racing entries, had different


"Man, it's a scary place at first and going into the corners off those long straightaways it's really fast," said Power, the recent winner at Long Beach who posted the fastest lap at 220.694 mph. "I kept thinking, how do you get around this place flat?

"I was thrilled we were finally able to get to that point (flat out) near the end of the day but getting those next five-six mph is probably going to be the challenge. You've just got to be smart and you don't want this place to bite you."

It's actually Servia's second time at IMS. He tried to make the show at the last minute in 2002 and was running quick enough but broke a fuel pump.

"It's definitely going to be fun having the whole month to work with the car and try to get competitive," said the 32-year-old veteran from Spain. "I've been racing over here for 10 years and never had a real shot at Indy so I'm very excited. This place is all about getting into a rhythm and today was a good way to start. But this is like no other oval you ever see."


E.J. Viso was warned about Indy's tricky turns but had no trouble adapting in his HVM Racing Dallara-Honda.

"I heard from some other drivers how difficult and scary the track is but I didn't think it was too bad," said Viso, who was second fastest at 220.445 mph. "For sure, the speeds are higher and it's quite a long lap but it's nice we get so much time to prepare.

"It's going to be much better than my first two ovals because it seemed like we got very little practice."

The last time Justin Wilson ran Indy, Turn 1 was actually the last corner of the United States Grand Prix, where he finshed eighth in 2003.

"This definitely feels like the proper way around this track and I wondered what it would feel like when I was here inF1," said Wilson, who ran just over 218 mph for Newman/Haas/Lanigan. "Someone said it was like four quick corners on a road course and that's kinda how I found it. Unlike some ovals, the car goes where you point it and I rather like that. It was fun to drive today."

Alex Lloyd, the defending IPS champion who Chip Ganassi has farmed out to Rahal Letterman this month, quickly reached 219 mph as did Hideki Mutoh and Ryan Hunter-Reay.

Jamie Camara and Jay Howard were the other drivers completing all four phases of their test, while Enrique Bernoldi and Mario Moraes expect to get theirs finished Monday.

IndyCar Indianapolis ROP Day 2 - Lloyd il più rapido nella seconda giornata

Si è terminata anche la seconda giornata di prove con la conclusione definitiva dei Rookie Orientation Program, le sessioni di orientamento per i debuttanti. Tutti i piloti sono stati ammessi, rimane da decidere solamente Mario Dominguez, che avendo comunque completato le prime tre fasi è ammesso alla giornata di libere di domani nella quale però dovrà superare la quarta fase.

Miglior tempo di questa giornata per Alex Lloyd, il pilota del Rahal Letterman in collaborazione con Chip Ganassi, ha staccato un crono di 40.352, il primo a superare le 223 mph. Alle sue spalle il bravissimo giapponese Hideki Mutoh ad appena 78 millesimi di ritardo.

Terzo tempo per Will Power a 139 millesimi, l'australiano si è messo dietro Servia, Rahal, Wilson, Hunter-Reay e Bernoldi. E' stata giornata di "refresher" per Max Papis, Bruno Junqueira e Davey Hamilton che si sono subito trovati a loro agio con le monoposto.

L'unico incidente della giornata, che è anche il primo della settimana, è avvenuto intorno alla prima ora di sessione ed ha visto vittima Jamie Camara, uscito a muro alla curva 1. Vettura distrutta, ma pilota ok portato al centro medico solo per controlli medici di routine.

Le temperature sono rimaste sempre intorno ai 22° con meteo sereno, mentre il vento spirava da Sud-Ovest a circa 9 mph. Domani si comincia a provare sul serio, inizieranno le prove libere, con tutti i quasi 50 iscritti alla entry list che potranno scendere in pista.

Finalmente en el Brickyard

"Brickyard", nombre del circuito de Indianapolis. Se llama así porque conserva una "yard" en mitad de la recta principal con los adoquines originales de hace casi 100 años.

Las 500 millas de Indianápolis es la carrera mas carismática en los Estados Unidos. No solo por su fama y tradición, si no también por el reglamento, los procedimientos de antes y durante la carrera y la alta velocidad que la hacen la más peculiar.

Básicamente estamos todo el mes de Mayo rodando en el circuito cada día preparando la carrera que se celebrará el 25 de mayo. Esta semana nos centramos en la puesta a punto del coche para la clasificación. Este proceso también es muy peculiar. El próximo sábado se clasifican los 11 primeros, el domingo del 12 al 22 y el siguiente sábado del 23 al 33, que son el número máximo de coches que pueden participar. El domingo siguiente es el día "Bump Day", donde los que no se han podido clasificar tienen una oportunidad de repesca, si consiguen la velocidad necesaria hacen saltar al 33 y así hasta finalizar el día. Como veis es un proceso nada común. Esta carrera lleva más de 80 años con esta reglamentación por lo que aunque pueda parecer extraña tiene mucha tradición y seguimiento a lo largo de cada una de las fases.

Nuestro objetivo inmediato es clasificarnos este fin de semana, lo que significaría estar entre los 22 primeros. Mas que por lo posición de salida, seria muy importante porque esto nos permitiría trabajar en el "race setup" del coche, que al final es lo importante en una carrera de 500 millas y no solo pura velocidad. La puesta a punto para la clasificación y la carrera es muy distinta. En carrera el coche ha de ser obviamente rápido pero sobretodo ha de ser muy consistente y seguro ya que vas a estar rodando en circunstancias muy distintas, trafico constante, neumáticos gastados, depósitos llenos y vacíos...Quizás lo mas importante es un coche que pierda el mínimo grip en tráfico. A estas velocidades, 230 MPH aprox., cuando te acercas al coche de enfrente pierdes casi un tercio de la fuerza de los alerones. Sentirse cómodo en tráfico es la clave para esta carrera.

Hasta ahora estoy muy contento de los 3 primeros días de pruebas. En el fondo a nosotros nos viene mejor que a nadie poder hacer todos estos días de entrenamientos. Nos estamos enfrentando a equipos que no solo han corrido esta carrera muchas veces pero que además han tenido estos mismos coches durante 4 años. Nosotros aunque estamos yendo muy bien todavía nos falta mucho que aprender por lo que cada día que rodamos nos acercamos un poquito mas a la cabeza.

Espero que para el sábado hayamos podido probar suficiente y que consigamos clasificar el primer fin de semana.

Servià saldrá desde la novena fila
500 Millas de Indianápolis: Calificación

Oriol Servià (KV Racing Technology) ocupará la novena fila de la formación de salida en la 92ª edición de las 500 Millas de Indianápolis, que se disputaran el próximo domingo a partir de las siete de la tarde (hora española).

El catalán enlazó cuatro vueltas consecutivas sobre las 2,5 millas del Indianápolis Motor Speedway a un promedio de 220,767 millas/hora (355,28 km/h) en la calificación del sábado, marca que finalmente le ha valido el vigésimoquinto lugar en una parrilla que quedó definida ayer tras el denominado bump day.

La decimoquinta posición del piloto del RACC en la primera calificación (el fin de semana anterior) dejaba entrever la posibilidad de que pudiera estar en las cinco primeras filas de salida. Pero las circunstancias en que rodó el sábado fueron bastante distintas ya que la lluvia le hizo interrumpir el primer intento y después, con el asfalto seco, fue el primero en volver a la pista en unas condiciones aún no óptimas y que fueron mejorando progresivamente.

Oriol Servià: Ha habido una gran diferencia entre la primera calificación y ésta. En aquella rendimos tal como esperábamos y sin embargo esta vez no me he sentido satisfecho por cómo nos han ido las cosas. El sábado interrumpí mi primer intento por la lluvia y lo peor del caso es que después tuve que ser el primero en salir a pista, cuando aún era un poco húmeda y sin haber variado la configuración de los alerones.

La primera vuelta fue buena pero después perdí en cada giro y en el cómputo de los cuatro fui demasiado lento. Haberme clasificado vigésimoquinto me garantizaba prácticamente estar en la carrera, aún cuando quedaba el bump day, así que el paso previo más importante ya estaba hecho.

Evidentemente, preferiría salir desde más adelante pero en una carrera tan larga lo primordial será tener un coche consistente en las distintas situaciones que se presenten, tanto de tráfico en la pista como por el estado de los neumáticos. Habrá que saber evitar las situaciones complicadas que irán surgiendo hasta más allá de media carrera e intentar llegar a las últimas 50 vueltas entre los diez primeros, y a partir de allá aprovechar todo cuánto nos pueda favorecer.

El procedimiento de calificaciones que determinan las 33 plazas de la formación de salida de las 500 Millas de Indianápolis es muy peculiar. La primera sesión otorga la pole, que logró Scott Dixon, y las once primeras posiciones. La segunda -el día siguiente, aunque en esta ocasión suspendida por la lluvia- define las once plazas siguientes; y la tercera, el sábado siguiente, las once restantes.

Después queda aún el bump day, que se disputó ayer, en el que los no clasificados tienen la oportunidad de batir el tiempo de alguno de los pilotos de las cuatro últimas filas y eliminarle. Convencido de que su calificación para la carrera no corría peligro, Servià destinó el día de ayer a afinar el set-up de su Dallara-Honda para la carrera.


El gerundense no quedó satisfecho, ya que con idéntica configuración rodó más lento que Will Power, su compañero de equipo, sin explicación lógica. El viernes podremos probar el motor nuevo con el que disputaremos la carrera y espero que con él desaparezcan las diferencias, comenta Servià.

Oriol Servià logra terminar undécimo en las 500 Millas de Indianápolis, catorce plazas por delante de la que ha ocupado en la formación de salida.
Indianápolis (Indiana, EUA), 25.05.2008.- Oriol Servià (KV Racing Technology) ha logrado terminar undécimo en la 92ª edición de las 500 Millas de Indianápolis, quinta prueba de la IndyCar Series. El catalán ha finalizado catorce posiciones por delante de la que ha ocupado en la formación de salida y ha sido quien más plazas ha remontado entre los 33 participantes en esta histórica carrera disputada en el Indianápolis Motor Speedway. Sobre las 2,5 millas del circuito oval más famoso del mundo, el piloto del RACC había establecido un promedio de 355,28 km/hora en las calificaciones que el fin de semana anterior definieron la parrilla de salida. Servià ha sido tercero entre los debutantes y también quien ha obtenido el mejor resultado entre los pilotos procedentes de la Champ Car. En la general del campeonato, es ahora décimo.
Servià ha protagonizado una recuperación constante durante la carrera, que ha sido neutralizada en ocho ocasiones, lo que ha propiciado que las diferencias en el grupo delantero fueran bajas y que los quince primeros clasificados hayan terminado en la misma vuelta del vencedor, Scott Dixon, nuevo líder del campeonato. Muy bien compenetrado con su equipo, que ha hecho un excelente trabajo en cada uno de los ocho pit-stops, el gerundense también ha sacado un buen rendimiento a cada reanudación de carrera, a pesar de la falta de velocidad de su Dallara-Honda respecto a los más rápidos, un problema que ya se había manifestado en los entrenamientos. En la vuelta 50 (de 200), Servià ya era decimoquinto y prácticamente durante toda la segunda mitad de carrera ha estado entre los diez primeros, hasta que a dieciséis vueltas del final ha perdido dos lugares.
Oriol Servià: Estoy muy satisfecho ya que hemos hecho un buen trabajo en las paradas en el box y hemos sido efectivos en las reanudaciones de carrera. Terminar undécimo en Indianápolis es un resultado fantástico en las condiciones en qué lo hemos logrado. Sabíamos que al coche le faltaban tres o cuatro millas/hora de velocidad punta pero aún así he intentado aprovechar lo mejor que he sabido los rebufos. Ahora bien, cuando los demás coches me cogían distancia era imposible seguir su ritmo. Creo, sinceramente, que hemos extraído todo el potencial que hoy nos ha ofrecido el coche.
La sexta carrera de la IndyCar Series se disputará el próximo domingo, día 1 de junio, en el circuito oval de Milwaukee (Wisconsin).

Es la primera vez que veo, no íntegra pero si gran parte, las 500 millas y he de decir que me han gustado bastante. Lo primero que me gustaría resaltar es el resultado de Oriol... Hay que decir que para esta carrera se presentan más de 50 coches de los cuales sólo 39 han tomado la salida y terminar 11º la primera vez que corre en este circuito es un maravilloso resultado y más teniendo el coche que tiene nada competitivo para un circuito tan rápido.

Como curiosidad cabe destacar que la clasificación se corre a 4 vueltas y el fin de semana anterior y que es una carrera muy táctica en la que es prácticamente imposible que no haya SC (banderas amarillas que dicen ellos) 8 hubo ayer.

Super entretenida, como ha luchado Uri tras el incidente del comienzo.
Con el doble de pit stops que los de delante (6) y ha conseguido llegar al sexto, la victoria en las indycar está cada vez más cerquita!

Bueno este oval es peculiar porque no requiere tanta velocidad ni tiene mucha recta y no hay que a tope todo el rato esto le ayuda a los equipos nuevos ex-cc que les falta velocidad.

Tal como se le ha reconocido en la rueda de prensa posterior a la carrera, Oriol Servià (KV Racing Technology) ha sido el gran protagonista de la sexta prueba de la IndyCar Series, disputada en el circuito oval de Milwaukee.

El noveno mejor tiempo en los entrenamientos oficiales ya permitía presagiar que el catalán podría tener bastante a decir en este escenario donde ya había subido al podio los años 2003 y 2005, pero un toque en la primera vuelta le ha obligado a pasar por el box para cambiar el alerón delantero de su Dallara-Honda y reintegrarse a la carrera en la 26ª y última posición, a una vuelta del líder.

A partir de aquel momento, el piloto del RACC ha mantenido un ritmo frenético que primero le ha permitido desdoblarse del líder y después remontar hasta la sexta plaza entre los 19 pilotos que han cruzado la línea de meta al término de las 225 vueltas. Con este resultado, una vez más el mejor entre los pilotos procedentes de la Champ Car, Oriol Servià ha ganado tres posiciones en la clasificación general, en la que ahora es séptimo a solo cuatro puntos de Danica Patrick, quinta.

Oriol Servià: Ha sido una carrera impresionante, y valoro este resultado como una victoria. Ya se sabe que en un oval todos quieren ser el primero en la primera curva... y yo también. En la salida nos hemos tocado con Enrique Bernoldi y he debido pasar por el box para cambiar el alerón delantero. Como había bandera amarilla lo hemos hecho en tres paradas para intentar no perder vuelta, pero cuando he regresado definitivamente a la pista acababa de pasar Marco Andretti, líder en aquel momento. En la nueva arrancada le he superado y he rodado tan rápido como he podido para evitar perder definitivamente la vuelta. Lo he resuelto bien y cuando después (vuelta 63) ha habido una nueva neutralización, las distancias con los de delante se han acortado bastante y ello ha sido una buena ayuda.

Estoy muy contento por el trabajo que el equipo y yo hemos hecho, pero también muy fatigado. En los circuitos ovales normalmente no me canso pero en la primera parada ha desaparecido mi botella de agua y no he podido beber en toda la carrera.

Por lo que se ha visto, sin el incidente inicial podríamos haber luchado por el podio. Lo que ha quedado claro es que el equipo KV Racing Technology ya tiene un buen coche para los ovales pequeños como este; hoy ha sido un gran coche en las curvas, pero en las rectas los otros corrían más. Esto significa que debemos seguir siendo realistas y pensar que el próximo fin de semana, en un circuito más largo y más rápido, lo vamos a tener más difícil.

Ryan Briscoe ha sido el vencedor de esta carrera que ha registrado seis cambios de líder. La séptima prueba de la IndyCar Series se disputará el próximo sábado, día 7 de junio, en el circuito oval de Texas.

Un toque contra el muro de protección ha originado el abandono de Oriol Servià (KV Racing Technology) en la séptima carrera de la IndyCar Series, disputada en el circuito oval de Texas. El catalán había efectuado el decimosexto mejor tiempo en la calificación, rodando a un promedio de 340,09 km/hora sobre las 1,5 millas de este trazado y evidenciando los progresos del equipo KV Racing en los óvalos más rápidos. El piloto del RACC rodaba en la decimoséptima posición cuando en la vuelta 48 (de 228) ha sufrido el incidente en el que se ha roto una suspensión delantera de su Dallara-Honda. Servià es ahora décimo en la general del campeonato y sigue siendo el mejor clasificado entre los pilotos procedentes de la Champ Car.

Oriol Servià: Me sabe muy mal haber terminado así, después de la buena labor que ha hecho el equipo para mejorar la velocidad del coche. En el inicio de la carrera mi monoplaza era muy subvirador y en una de las paradas en el box hemos efectuado algunos retoques para mejorarle el comportamiento. Poco después me ha hecho un raro de forma brusca y se me ha ido de las manos. No he podido hacer nada y ha sido una lástima, ya que hemos roto una racha de muy buenos resultados si tenemos en cuenta nuestra inexperiencia en relación a la de muchos equipos de la antigua IRL. Ahora no puedo hacer más que pensar ya en la próxima carrera.

Scott Dixon ha sido el vencedor de esta prueba en la que seis pilotos han protagonizado 22 cambios de líder. El neozelandés ha incrementado su ventaja como líder de la clasificación general.
La octava carrera de la IndyCar Series se disputará el día 22 del presente mes de junio en el circuito oval de Iowa.

Viendo que luchar en estas condiciones para concluir entre los diez primeros era imposible, Servià y su equipo han aprovechado para trabajar en los reglajes del coche, lo que explica sus nueve entradas en boxes, seis más que el vencedor. El gerundense ha cedido un lugar en la clasificación general y ahora es undécimo.

Oriol Servià declaraba al final de la prueba que: "Realmente hemos tenido un día difícil, con un coche que era muy inestable. Los circuitos ovales son así, si no se tiene un vehículo perfectamente a punto no hay mucho por hacer".

"Cuando el comportamiento se va degradando, tal como nos ha sucedido aquí, solo hay dos salidas, abandonar o aprovechar los kilómetros de la carrera para hacer pruebas. Evidentemente, hemos optado por la segunda posibilidad, ya que nos queda mucho por aprender, y hemos efectuado distintas variaciones en el monoplaza, probando incluso diferentes alturas", ha añadido Serviá.

Dan Wheldon ha sido el vencedor de esta carrera en la que cuatro pilotos se han repartido el liderato durante las 250 vueltas y que ha sido neutralizada seis veces. La novena prueba puntuable se disputará el próximo sábado (día 28 de junio) por la noche, en el circuito oval de Richmond.

Servia tops Richmond rookie practice

Oriol Servia set the quickest time in the rookie practice session for this weekend's IndyCar round at Richmond International Raceway.

Eight IRL rookies had a 90-minute practice session, with four IndyCar drivers who have not previously raced at Richmond, the shortest oval on the calendar at 0.75 miles, granted half an hour of practice ahead of the full sessions that begin this evening.

Servia's best lap, a 16.139 (167.295mph), was the best of the sessions, ahead of his KV Racing teammate Will Power (165.185mph), EJ Viso and Enrique Bernoldi.

"The car felt comfortable, I liked the balance, although I can see that the race must be really tough in traffic," said Servia. "It's hard on your own because everything is narrow and you have issues getting your marks.

"I can only imagine how it's going to be with 26 cars. I can see this is a place where you can make mistakes easily so we're going to have to keep our brain on top of the game."

Kanaan claims Richmond pole

Tony Kanaan will lead teammate Marco Andretti in an all-Andretti Green front row in Saturday night's Richmond round of the IRL IndyCar Series, after a welcome change of luck for the Brazilian driver.

Kanaan, whose season has been filled with misfortune, took advantage of the luck of the draw to beat Andretti by just 0.03 seconds over four laps of the 0.75-mile oval.

By the time Kanaan got on track, the sun had set and the 98-degree heat had settled into a less beastly temperature range.

"It's an advantage to go out that late, for sure, but it's also pure luck," Kanaan said. "It's the number you draw. If you wanted to talk about luck with me this year, I think I deserve a little bit of the good kind."

The effort knocked Andretti from P1, but also came with his help. After Andretti's run, Kanaan's crew made changes suggested by Andretti's crew, then took the pole from him.

"We made an adjustment right before we went out based on the feedback we got from Marco," Kanaan said. "We've been working very well together, and we had the exact same set-ups. I was able to make my car a little bit quicker than his."

With the track washed clean of rubber by an afternoon storm but conditions becoming increasingly conducive to fast times as the weather cooled, the evening qualifying session saw a number of surprises - including Graham Rahal grabbing third for Newman/Haas/Lanigan on a day when his teammate Justin Wilson, who had been much earlier in the order, only managed 23rd place.

"We made changes and it got cooler," Rahal said. "We're so happy that it finally came together for us."

Championship leader Scott Dixon held provisional pole for much of the session before being edged back to fourth as others benefited from the improving conditions.

"We think we left a lot on the table," said Dixon, who has now qualified in the top four for eight of this season's nine races. "With the track cooling off, it got better."

The Ganassi driver will start just of the highly-impressive Buddy Rice, who earned a giant-killing fifth place for Dreyer & Reinbold. The result was Rice's best qualifying performance for nearly three seasons, and helped make up for the frustrations of Iowa a week ago, where he was classified 22nd.

"It was disappointing last week," Rice said. "This is a place that's an equaliser. We left stuff out there. Hopefully we can rebound here."

Dixon's teammate Dan Wheldon completed the top six, ahead of AGR's Hideki Mutoh and Vision's AJ Foyt IV, with Bruno Junqueira also producing a star underdog performance to earn ninth for Dale Coyne Racing.

While several unlikely names starred, Penske were among those who struggled, with Ryan Briscoe and Helio Castroneves ending up only 11th and 18th respectively.

Ryan Hunter-Reay (Rahal Letterman Racing) fared worse: a technical problem preventing the morning practice pace-setter from even attempting a lap.

He will be joined at the back by Enrique Bernoldi, whose Conquest Racing team narrowly failed to get his car repaired in time after his practice crash.

Kanaan wins wild Richmond race

Tony Kanaan finally took his first victory of the 2008 IRL IndyCar Series season by winning from pole on an extremely destructive evening at Richmond.

The race saw a total of nine cautions, mostly compacted into the event's disjointed first half, with only 10 cars completing the distance without damage.

Penske's Helio Castroneves recovered from his poor qualifying to take second, as series leader Scott Dixon completed the podium ahead of his Ganassi teammate Dan Wheldon, whose car faltered - apparently out of fuel - at the final corner, costing him third.

But while Andretti Green Racing could celebrate Kanaan's win, they missed out on a potential one-two when Marco Andretti lost ground by pitting under green having led much of the race, leaving the young American ninth at the flag.

The opening laps set the tone for the chaos that followed, with the yellow emerging immediately for Ryan Hunter-Reay's harmless spin at the tail of the field. No sooner had the race resumed on lap six than the pace car was out again after Will Power lost control while being passed by Helio Castroneves and slammed into the wall.

The field managed nine laps of green between this incident and a tangle between John Andretti and AJ Foyt IV on lap 24. While Andretti continued unscathed, Foyt hit the wall and threw debris into the path of his Vision Racing teammate Ed Carpenter, who required a long stop for suspension repairs.

A prolonged green stint then followed at last, with Kanaan leading Marco Andretti, Graham Rahal and Dixon in a close lead battle. They all pitted during the lap 68 caution for debris, allowing Conquest's Jaime Camara and AGR's Danica Patrick to move to the front of the field, having both stopped out of sequence under earlier yellows.

Kanaan rejoined third, with Castroneves up to fourth from 18th on the grid thanks to a superb early charge and a very rapid stop.

Another plethora of yellows then followed, as at the restart Buddy Rice spun his Dreyer & Reinbold car into the wall and out of a strong seventh place, and then Ryan Briscoe tangled with both Darren Manning and Bruno Junqueira in the middle of the pack. The next attempt at a restart was equally unsuccessful, with John Andretti having his second collision of the evening - this time eliminating both himself and Vitor Meira.

Patrick chose to pit under this yellow, while Marco Andretti had jumped Castroneves at the previous restart and then passed both Kanaan and Camara in quick succession once racing resumed in earnest, hitting the front on lap 116 and quickly pulling away.

Andretti then decided not to stop when the pace car emerged yet again on lap 131 after Rahal crashed out of seventh place, whereas most of the rest of the field pitted under either this caution or the one that followed soon after when Hunter-Reay and Mario Moraes tangled just after the restart.

That kept Andretti at the front of the field, but left him out of sequence compared to the chasing Kanaan, Castroneves and Camara. The American continued to edge away from the pack and hoped to stretch his fuel load to the next yellow, only for the race to finally run uninterrupted for a lengthy period. Andretti ultimately had to stop under green on lap 204, losing a lap in the process.

His hopes depended on the rest of the leaders also having to pit under green, but 14 laps later Camara crashed out of his superb third place, allowing everyone else to stop under the resultant yellow - although Andretti at least managed to get back on the lead lap when waved around by the pace car.

The race then ran trouble-free for the final 71-lap run to the flag, with Kanaan calmly inching away from Castroneves to win by a comfortable five seconds.

Behind the Ganassi duo, KV Racing's Oriol Servia had a strong race to fifth ahead of Patrick, Justin Wilson (Newman/Haas/Lanigan) and Townsend Bell (Dreyer & Reinbold), as Andretti found it hard to make progress in the final stint, falling a lap down again and having to settle for ninth.

THE MODERATOR: Our fifth‑place finisher, Oriol Servia. Interesting night, what was your take?
ORIOL SERVIA: It was a really busy day. It's a difficult place and the car was great. Since we unloaded on Thursday, I told the guys, I said, "Listen, I think we have a Top‑5 car."
So I'm really pleased I was able to prove it and finish fifth. We started at tenth and really worked our way up, and every spot we gained, we really gained it through working hard. I passed many cars on the restarts and we passed cars on pit stops, so I think we all did our job and I'm extremely pleased.
Everybody expected us to do well on street and road courses, but I wanted to show that the team is really capable of doing a good job on ovals, so we kind of showed it in Milwaukee and we showed it again today.
Q. (No mic.)
ORIOL SERVIA: Well, I don't know. I don't know what to say. We knew that the tires were really fast at the beginning and the pace would slow down for everybody. So it was a question to see who had the most consistent cars through the spin.
And Helio, obviously from where he was, he was extremely faster than anybody on his team but then he was quite slow, I think he was getting very loose later in the seam and then he would pass us early and then kind of slow down.
So it was all a question of how your car was through the seam, and unfortunately we didn't have a jacket through this race, so that handicapped how many things you can do on the car through the different fuel loads and tire life. But fortunately the car was very consistent and fast on the full spin.
Q. Was there an issue on restarts?
ORIOL SERVIA: It's just that we are all racers and once we know the pace, it's really hard to overtake anybody, until you get into traffic so restarts are your best bet. I made most of my moves on restarts on the outside and inside and everywhere, and everybody tries the same. On the restarts the tires are colder and when you take the biggest grips is when you have the hardest time on the lap time, so that's why it's very easy to lose it. That's why you're seeing all that action happening.
Q. How tough was it today to pass?
ORIOL SERVIA: My car was good on highs and lows, but tough on restarts or when the guy was ahead of me. When I was losing the downforce, I couldn't get closer. And like now at the end when Danica was faster than me and I was catching lap cars, I just couldn't pass the lap cars, and then she had many chances to overtake me. Fortunately I was able to keep her behind, and she was difficult.

RICHMOND, Va. - Oriol Servia forecast a top-five finish for the No. 5 KV Racing Technology car before the first practice session at Richmond International Raceway.
"Fortunately, I was able to prove it," said the first-year IndyCar Series driver, who recorded a career-best fifth place on an oval in the SunTrust Indy Challenge.
Servia, who started 10th, finished sixth at Milwaukee to tag onto 11th-place finishes at Kansas and Indianapolis.
"Everybody expected us to do well on the road and street courses, but I really wanted to prove the team is capable of doing a good job on ovals," he said. "Obviously, we have started to work out these short ovals and now we have to work on the big ones, but every time we are moving forward."
Team co-owner Jimmy Vasser wrapped his arms around Servia, soaking wet from the 300 laps run in temperatures that dropped to the mid-80s.
"Our first top-five, it's great," said Vasser, the 1996 CART season champion. "Oriol drove a great race, the guys did a great job in the pits and we had our sponsors here from Plantronics. I think we had a pretty strong car all weekend. It was just a great day. Now we're looking forward to getting into the meat of the road course part of the season, and I think we'll be well-prepared."

Briscoe claims Watkins Glen pole

Ryan Briscoe, Penske, Watkins Glen qualifyingRyan Briscoe claimed his first IRL IndyCar Series pole position in three years in qualifying for the Watkins Glen race.

The Penske driver beat Newman/Haas/Lanigan's Justin Wilson to the top spot by 0.03 seconds in the final shoot-out for pole position.

Wilson chose to sit out the final moments hoping his time would prove unbeatable, only to see Briscoe sneak ahead.

Ryan Hunter-Reay (Rahal Letterman Racing) qualified an impressive third, beating championship leader Scott Dixon (Ganassi), who will chase his fourth straight Watkins Glen win from the outside of row two after an error on his final flying lap.

Dixon's closest title rival Helio Castroneves - who was aiming for a fourth consecutive Watkins Glen pole - will start from the tail of the 26-car field after his Penske Dallara-Honda suffered a mechanical problem before he could set a time in the first part of qualifying.

Under this year's road and street course qualifying regulations, the field is split into two groups for the first session. The top six from each group then unite for a 15-minute session that decides positions seven to 12 on the grid and sends the final six cars through to a ten minute shoot-out for the first three rows.

KV's Oriol Servia and Andretti Green's Tony Kanaan were the other men to make it through to the top six and will share row three.

Marco Andretti just missed the cut for the 'Fast Six' session and will start seventh, alongside impressive underdog Darren Manning, who again showed excellent road course speed for AJ Foyt Racing.

Ganassi's Dan Wheldon was only ninth, despite feeling that he had his most competitive road course set-up since joining the team. Vitor Meira (Panther) completed the top ten.

Bruno Junqueira had been fastest of all in the first qualifying group and looked set to mount a shock pole challenge for the tiny Dale Coyne Racing team.

But his strategy of waiting until late in the top 12 segment before attempting his flying laps backfired when Will Power (KV Racing) crashed at Turn 7. The stoppage to clear up Power's debris shortened the session by several minutes and led to a frantic last minute rush in which Junqueira could only manage 11th.

His teammate Mario Moraes and Andretti Green's Danica Patrick could consider themselves unfortunate not to make it through from the group stages of qualifying to fight for the top 12.

Both ran in group two and set faster times than the group one pace-setters, who had not been able to make their final runs after their session was curtailed when AJ Foyt IV spun his Vision Racing car into the Turn 7 barriers. But despite their speed, as Moraes and Patrick were only seventh and eighth in the faster second group, they will have to start from row seven.

Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing managed to repair Graham Rahal's car after his practice crash, but the St Petersburg winner was only able to take 18th on the grid in his patchwork car, which was running with various pieces of teammate Wilson's spare bodywork.

Que grande Uri! Quinto en el Glen, a ver si hay suerte mañana

Oriol Servià (KV Racing Technology) ha finalizado decimosexto en la undécima carrera de la IndyCar Series, disputada anoche en el circuito oval de Nashville y en la que el catalán ha sido líder durante cinco vueltas (de la 63 a la 68) en función de una estrategia alternativa en sus paradas en boxes. La falta de velocidad de su Dallara-Honda en este trazado de 1,3 millas de longitud afectó a Servià desde el primer momento y le relegó a la novena fila de la formación de salida tras haber efectuado el decimoséptimo mejor tiempo en la calificación, a una media de 324,18 km/hora. En estas condiciones, una estrategia alternativa en los pit-stop representaba la única posibilidad de escalar posiciones.

El piloto del RACC, que hoy celebra su 34 cumpleaños, ha aprovechado la primera neutralización para anticipar, en la vuelta 6, su primera parada, lo que le ha permitido encabezar la carrera cuando a partir de la vuelta 57 las detenciones en boxes han sido mayoritarias. Desafortunadamente, durante la segunda parada de Servià (vuelta 68) se ha roto una pistola de ruedas, incidente que le ha hundido en la clasificación. Finalmente, las expectativas de terminar entre los diez primeros, siempre según la estrategia planificada, se han esfumado cuando la prueba ha sido detenida en la vuelta 171, a 29 del final, por la lluvia y cuando otros pilotos tenían pendiente el último pit-stop.

Oriol Servià: La falta de velocidad ha sido un problema constante. Hice las cuatro vueltas de calificación con la incidencia del alerón a cero y el acelerador absolutamente a tope durante todo el rato, y ya vimos cual fue el resultado. Aún así, el coche era bastante consistente en su comportamiento y por ello buscábamos una estrategia alternativa que nos permitiera ganar lo que en la pista no podíamos y así salvar la situación de la mejor forma posible, pero esto tampoco nos ha salido bien, primero por la pistola de la rueda rota y, finalmente, por la lluvia. No se puede considerar que haya sido un fin de semana perdido, ya que siempre se acumula experiencia, pero sí insatisfactorio.

Scott Dixon ha sido el vencedor de la carrera. Con su cuarta victoria de esta temporada, el neocelandés ha incrementado su ventaja como líder de la clasificación general, en la que Oriol Servià ha perdido una plaza y es undécimo. La duodécima prueba de la IndyCar Series se disputará el próximo domingo, 20 de julio, en el circuito de Mid-Ohio, el segundo trazado permanente convencional de esta temporada.

Oriol Servià finaliza en quinta posición

Oriol Servià (KV Racing Technology) ha logrado la quinta posición, tres por delante de la que ha ocupado en la formación de salida, en la duodécima carrera de la IndyCar Series, disputada en el circuito permanente de Mid-Ohio.

Con este resultado, que le ha situado de nuevo entre los diez primeros de la general, el catalán ha culminado un fin de semana en constante progresión. Del vigésimo mejor tiempo (1:09.6515) en el cómputo de los entrenamientos libres del viernes saltó al quinto el sábado por la mañana (1:08.1350), registro que mejoró posteriormente en la calificación (1:07.8447), a una media de 192,81 km/hora sobre este trazado de 2,258 millas, después de haber modificado completamente los reglages de su Dallara-Honda.

La lluvia que ha caído antes del inicio de la carrera ha perjudicado las primeras vueltas de Servià, que ha perdido algunas posiciones al demorar el cambio de neumáticos sobre una pista que se ha secado rápidamente. El piloto del RACC ha pasado al ataque a partir del segundo pit-stop (vuelta 27), remontando desde la decimocuarta posición hasta la quinta, a la que ha accedido a ocho vueltas del final.

Oriol Servià: Todo el equipo, y por supuesto yo mismo, estamos muy satisfechos por la progresión que hemos hecho este fin de semana. Como aún estamos aprendiendo el coche, el viernes decidimos mantener la misma configuración que tan bien nos había ido en Watkins Glen. Pero fue un desacierto ya que éste es un circuito muy específico que requiere un set-up propio. El equipo efectuó un buen trabajo y ello se notó el sábado desde el primer momento.

En el inicio de carrera he dudado de si entrar un par de vueltas antes para montar los neumáticos lisos pero me ha parecido que el asfalto estaba aún demasiado húmedo y no me la he querido jugar tan prematuramente. Otros lo han hecho y a alguien, concretamente a Will, mi compañero de equipo, le ha salido bien. He podido mantener un buen ritmo, especialmente en la segunda mitad de la prueba, y ello genera buenas expectativas para la próxima carrera, aunque insisto en qué hay cosas del coche que aún se nos escapan y que hemos de seguir aprendiendo.

Ryan Briscoe ha sido el vencedor de esta carrera, que ha registrado ocho cambios de líder. Scott Dixon, tercero, sigue al frente de la general. La decimotercera prueba de la IndyCar Series se disputará el próximo sábado, día 26 de julio, en el circuito trazado en las pistas del aeropuerto de Edmonton (Canadá).

¿Primer podium?. Hay que ganar, ganar y volver a ganar . Es una gran noticia para el automovilismo español que otro piloto, al que por cierto no se le da bola, esté entre los mejores de una gran competición a nivel mundial como la Indy. Parece que Castroneves y Briscoe, junto a Dixon, tienen de lejos el mejor coche de la parrilla y les da igual el circuito porque siempre están arriba.

Una pena que Wheldon aparte de taponarle le tapono de verdad impactando con su caja de cambios por pegar un frenazo y haciendole perder el podio respecto a wilson que le paso y en la vuelta ultimo, quedarse sin direccion por el motivo del choque perdiendo otra posicion.

ORIOL SERVIA (No. 5 KV Racing Technology, fifth): "It was just one of those races. The KV Racing Technology car was as good, if not better than any car out there, but the race just didn't go our way. We had a couple of issues on the pits stops and lost some places, but the car was good enough to pick them back up on track. Then I was racing with Dan Wheldon, and Marco (Andretti) came out of the pits and he parked it in the chicane. I tried to slow down, Wheldon braked hard, but had nowhere to go and I hit him really hard. I broke the front wing, but the car didn't lose too much lap time. It was just the last two laps, the steering arm started to break, and on the last lap it completely broke. So, in a way we were unlucky, but lucky to finish at all. We still managed to get some good points for the championship, but it was disappointing because we had a car to battle with whoever we wanted today."

Problemas mecánicos apartan a Servià del podio, finalmente P5

Oriol Servià (KV Racing Technology) ha finalizado quinto en la decimotercera carrera de la IndyCar Series, disputada en el circuito trazado en las pistas del aeropuerto de Edmonton. El catalán ha completado las once últimas vueltas con una bieleta de dirección de su Dallara-Honda rota, contratiempo que le ha impedido defender sus opciones al podio y que, además, le ha costado la cuarta posición en la última vuelta.

Con este resultado, el mismo que había logrado en las carreras de Long Beach, Richmond y Mid-Ohio, el piloto del RACC ha ascendido dos plazas en la general y es octavo, a falta de cuatro carreras para el final del campeonato. Servià ha sido uno de los pilotos más competitivos durante todo el fin de semana en este singular circuito de 1,973 millas de longitud. Tercero en el cómputo de las tres sesiones de entrenamientos libres, mantuvo este mismo lugar en una apretada calificación en la que el margen entre los cuatro primeros de la formación de salida fue de tan solo 12 centésimas. El gerundense ha mantenido la tercera posición, tras Helio Castroneves y Ryan Briscoe, hasta su primera parada en boxes (vuelta 21) en la que ha perdido una plaza en beneficio de Scott Dixon, el futuro vencedor. Un problema al cambiar una rueda posterior en el segundo pit-stop (vuelta 51) le ha costado a Servià cuatro posiciones más que ha ido recuperando hasta volver a situarse cuarto en la vuelta 70.
Diez giros después y a solo once del final, un toque con Dan Wheldon (con quien luchaba por la tercera plaza) cuando éste ha tenido que frenar bruscamente para evitar una colisión con Marco Andretti, a quien doblaba, ha causado desperfectos que han ido deteriorando irreversiblemente el monoplaza de Servià.

Oriol Servià: A pesar de que hubiéramos podido acabar bastante mejor, soy consciente de que tal como estaba el coche posiblemente no hubiera podido completar ni una vuelta más puesto que en las dos últimas giraba con solo una rueda y, sabiendo que estaba a punto de romperse toda la dirección, se me han hecho eternas. Así que no puedo estar decepcionado. Hemos sido muy rápidos tanto en entrenamientos como en carrera, hemos mejorado la posición en la general y solo los infortunios nos han impedido estar más arriba. La carrera de Edmonton ha cerrado seis fines de semana consecutivos de competición en la IndyCar Series. La próxima prueba se disputará en el circuito oval de Kentucky, el día 9 de agosto.

Oriol Servià finaliza duodécimo en Sparta (Kentucky)

Oriol Servià (KV Racing Technology) ha finalizado duodécimo, la misma posición que ha ocupado en la formación de salida, en la decimocuarta carrera de la IndyCar Series, disputada en el circuito oval de Kentucky. Aún cuando en la calificación rodó a un promedio de 349,24 km/hora sobre este trazado de 1,48 millas, al catalán le ha faltado de nuevo velocidad en su Dallara-Honda, lo que le ha impedido seguir el ritmo de los más rápidos en esta carrera en la que ha vuelto a ser el mejor clasificado entre todos los procedentes de la Champ Car.

El piloto del RACC es décimo en la general de la IndyCar Series, empatado a puntos con los dos que le preceden. Servià mantenía la duodécima plaza cuando al salir de su primer pit-stop (vuelta 51, de 200) ha debido detenerse antes de regresar a la pista ya que el coche de Milka Duno obstruía el paso, consecuencia de un trompo. Relegado a la decimoquinta posición, el equipo KV Racing ha decidido cambiar la estrategia de paradas en el box para intentar ahorrarse una, lo que ha permitido a Servià recuperar en la última vuelta la posición inicial.

Oriol Servià: Honestamente, hemos hecho cuanto hemos podido, pero hemos vuelto a sufrir puesto que en los circuitos ovales nos sigue faltando experiencia con este coche en relación con los equipos que llevan años con él y ello se traduce en unas décimas o incluso centésimas de segundo que seguimos sin encontrar y que resultan fundamentales. Es una situación bastante distinta a la de los circuitos permanentes, donde hemos demostrado defendernos mucho mejor.

Scott Dixon ha logrado su sexta victoria de esta temporada en un final de carrera electrizante, con los cuatro primeros clasificados en el mismo segundo. La decimoquinta prueba de la IndyCar Series se disputará en el circuito permanente de Sonoma, el día 24 del presente mes de agosto.

Que se preparen los Villa, Roldan, Alsuarsegui y compañia, porque lamentablemente esto es lo que les espera.

El catalán ha obtenido el sexto mejor tiempo en la calificación de este sábado, estableciendo su mejor registro de 1:17.8377 en la quinta y última vuelta de la tercera y definitiva fase de calificación, de diez minutos de duración y a la que han accedido los seis pilotos más rápidos en la fase anterior. El piloto del RACC, tercero en el cómputo de los entrenamientos libres del viernes, compartirá fila de salida con Scott Dixon, el líder del campeonato.

Esta será la carrera número 140 de Oriol Servià en la máxima categoría americana de monoplazas. El gerundense es décimo en la clasificación general de la IndyCar, empatado a puntos con los dos pilotos que le preceden.

La carrera empezará a las 23h 30 (hora española) y constará de 80 vueltas a este circuito de 2,303 millas de longitud.

Oriol Servià (KV Racing Technology) ha logrado el tercer mejor tiempo en la calificación del Gran Premio de Detroit y mañana iniciará la decimosexta y penúltima prueba de la IndyCar Series desde la segunda fila de la formación de salida. En el circuito urbano de la Bella Isla, en el lago Eyre, el catalán ha igualado este sábado el tercer lugar en calificación que obtuvo en Edmonton, hasta ahora su mejor resultado de la presente temporada. El piloto del RACC ha protagonizado una progresión constante. Noveno en los entrenamientos libres de ayer (1:14.7119) y séptimo en los de esta mañana (1:13.6896), se ha ganado una plaza entre los seis pilotos que se han disputado la posición preferente después de haber sido séptimo en la primera fase de calificación (1:13.4001) y cuarto en la segunda (1:12.6978). Servià ha establecido el registro que le ha situado tercerp en la parrilla en la tercera de las cinco vueltas que ha completado a este circuito de 2,07 millas, rodando a un promedio de 164,36 km/hora.

Scott Dixon y Helio Castroneves, los dos primeros clasificados en la general del campeonato, compartirán la primera línea de salida. Castroneves ha desposeído a Oriol Servià del segundo mejor tiempo a falta de un minuto y medio para el final de la sesión. La carrera, que puede decidir el título a favor de Dixon, empezará a las 21h 30 (hora peninsular) y está programada a 90 vueltas.

Wilson takes first IRL win in Detroit

Justin Wilson claimed his first win in the IRL IndyCar Series in Detroit after Helio Castroneves was awarded to relinquish the lead by race control having allegedly blocked the Newman/Haas/Lanigan driver.

Until the controversial late call by the officials, Castroneves looked set to take his third win at the Detroit street course and carve into title rival Scott Dixon's championship lead. With Dixon only finishing fifth, Castroneves has still reduced his deficit, but the title is now Dixon's to lose at Chicagoland next week.

Dixon and Castroneves had stormed away from the field in unison in the opening stages, pulling out a huge lead over the rest of the pack.

But when Dixon's Ganassi teammate Dan Wheldon - who had made a tactical early stop - tangled with Conquest's Jaime Camara and caused a yellow on lap 17, Dixon chose to make his first pit stop while the majority of the field stayed on track.

That dropped Dixon to 18th place, and as the Kiwi made slow progress through the midfielders, Castroneves stormed away from KV's Oriol Servia, Wilson and Andretti Green's Tony Kanaan at the front of the field.

By the time Castroneves made his own first stop under green on lap 30, his advantage was such that he was able to rejoin still ahead of Dixon, whose traffic delays meant that he was back in fifth place once all the front-runners had pitted.

Dixon would remain there for the rest of the afternoon, while Castroneves comfortably pulled away after every yellow and at one stage led by a full 16 seconds.

However when separate incidents for Wheldon and Mario Moraes (Dale Coyne Racing) caused the final caution with 25 laps to go, the pack was able to close back in on Castroneves.

Wilson had passed Servia for second in the pits and he launched an immediate attack on Castroneves when racing resumed. The Brazilian held on to the lead, but his defensive tactics attracted the ire of the race officials, and he was ordered to allow Wilson past. He duly obeyed the instruction, allowing Wilson to sweep ahead on lap 73.

Despite Castroneves' best efforts, Wilson was able to cruise home and clinch his first win since joining N/H/L and moving to the IndyCar Series, with the furious Castroneves having to settle for a close second place - putting him 30 points behind Dixon going into the finale.

They finished comfortably clear of third-placed Kanaan, with Servia holding off Dixon for fourth. Ryan Hunter-Reay (Rahal Letterman) completed the top six.

Bruno Junqueira used great strategy and some bold passes to move up from the back of the grid to seventh for Dale Coyne Racing, ahead of KV's Will Power, who lost ground when he damaged his front wing on Hunter-Reay's car, and Ryan Briscoe (Penske), who became caught in traffic having followed the same pit strategy as Dixon.

This pit plan also backfired for Wilson's teammate Graham Rahal, who dropped back from sixth to 13th when he had to make a late extra fuel stop. That allowed Vision Racing's AJ Foyt IV to fill the final top ten spot.

Other incidents saw EJ Viso crash out alone when on course for a top eight finish, Vitor Meira and Danica Patrick spoil their races with a collision, and Marco Andretti's uncompetitive weekend end in a gearbox failure.

Tomas Scheckter never had a chance to feature after his Luczo Dragon car broke a half-shaft on the opening lap, but he was able to rejoin following a long stop for repairs - as did debutant Alex Tagliani, whose Conquest Dallara had gearbox problems in the early stages.

Una pena al equipo le falta mejorar el coche bastante en carrera, perdio el tercer puesto en el ultimo repostaje cogiendo un trafico en una vuelta extra que tenia en pista respeto kanan.
