Fast F2008 to go radical before Aus GP


Feb.11 (GMM) As Ferrari, and particularly Kimi Raikkonen, already display an apparently obvious level of dominance, the Italian team's 2008 car could be set for some radical treatment as the final test days before Melbourne draw near.

It is reported in the Italian magazine Autosprint that, before the F2008's Australian grand prix specification is finalised, an unique solution at the front of the red single seater will be tested in Spain.

Reportedly, the innovation is an opening in the upper front of the car's nose; where the Bridgestone 'B' logo is currently located.

"Well, it's an interesting idea," Red Bull technical director Geoff Willis commented.

"Its function is probably to use the central part of the front wing in a better way."

At the Barcelona circuit next week, Ferrari will also test with new wings, bargeboards and engine cover, despite team manager Luca Baldisserri declaring that he is already "very satisfied" with the F2008's winter showing.

Alongside only Toyota, the team resumed testing in Bahrain for another three days on Saturday.

Ferrari spokesman Luca Colajanni played down the reliability faults that plagued Felipe Massa on Saturday, and both runners on Sunday.

"It's these little glitches you find during testing that are very important. If you have a similar problem in the race and don't know how to fix it, you're out.

"It's crucial that you be very careful and find them now," he told Gulf Daily News.

Bahrain to host big F1 names for Forum

Feb.11 (GMM) Bahrain's formula one circuit will host the first Motor Sport Business Forum Middle East on April 1 and 2 -- the week of the grand prix in Sakhir. Team principals for McLaren, Honda, Red Bull, Williams, Force India and possibly Ferrari, and 500 delegates, will be there, organisers said.

It will be the first time the annual event takes place outside of Monaco.

F-India to continue arbitration case


Feb.11 (GMM) Even after the sale of the Spyker team to Force India, team boss Colin Kolles is determined to press ahead with a legal claim against F1 rivals Super Aguri and Toro Rosso.

Almost one year ago, Kolles announced that he would pursue the teams in arbitration for the alleged illegality of their 2007 single seaters, arguing that they are nearly direct copies of cars designed and built by their parent teams.

The case is presently before the Swiss based Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne.

Sources close to the team's new owner Vijay Mallya have told the Indian press that the Spyker arbitration will continue in the Force India guise.

Sources at Mallya's brewing empire UB Group insist that the Silverstone based team is "intent on pursuing (the) arbitration case", according to the publication DNA India.

"We are of the opinion that Aguri and Toro Rosso cannot be part of F1 as per the provisions in the Concorde Agreement.

"Given a choice, we want them out, for sure. The lesser the competition, the better," the UB source said.

Honda-powered Super Aguri would not comment.

"We have been advised by the legal team not to comment on the matter," a spokeswoman for the team said.

Bahrain to consider F1 night race


Feb.11 (GMM) Bosses of the Bahrain grand prix are discussing the possibility of following in the footsteps of Singapore and Malaysia in organising a formula one night race.

The Sakhir circuit's chief operating officer Shaikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa told the local Gulf Daily News that, unlike race chiefs in Melbourne, Bahrain is "not opposed" to the concept of lighting up the track.

"It is only natural that we have been gathering information about it, trying to determine its advantages and disadvantages," he said.

Singapore will stage F1's first ever floodlit grand prix this September, while the race in Malaysia next year is likely to also be held in local hours of darkness, primarily to aid television viewers back in Europe.

Gulf Daily News said a benefit to Bahrain of a night race is that, as well as cooler temperatures, spectators would be able to attend after work, as Sunday is a normal weekday in the kingdom.

Shaikh Salman added: "I have no knowledge of it being proposed for Bahrain, but it is a very interesting concept.

"Right now, it makes most sense more for host countries further east. Here, it is debatable and we would have to go through lengthy discussions with Formula One Management before we can seriously consider it," he said.

Webber tells Aus to fight for night race

Feb.11 (GMM) Mark Webber has urged Australians to fight to retain their grand prix.

The Melbourne race is currently in serious doubt beyond 2010, with organisers of the Albert Park event unwilling to meet Bernie Ecclestone's demand for the grand prix to be held under lights.

31-year-old Webber, Australia's only current formula one driver, told the local Herald Sun newspaper that race bosses should consider the night race option.

"We should try to make night work. It could be exactly what the event needs -- who knows?" the Red Bull driver said.

Webber was also quoted as telling Adelaide's Sunday Mail: "We should fight to have a night race."

But while insisting that F1 is crucial to Melbourne's international reputation, Webber can also see the sense in Ecclestone's hard line stance.

"You can't constantly keep having the same toys in the sand pit," he said.

"He's (Ecclestone) certainly got his head screwed on and he will do what is best for the sport," Webber added.

Sauber cars to be auctioned in Zurich

Feb.11 (GMM) Fans of the grand prix team formerly run by Peter Sauber will soon be able to get their hands on one or more of the Swiss outfit's single seaters.

It is reported by the German language news agency SID that several Sauber F1 cars will be up for grabs at Zurich's Kloten airport as of February 19.

Among the Saubers to go under the hammer is a racer piloted by Jean Alesi, and also the first formula one car Kimi Raikkonen drove in 2001.

Sauber, taken over by BMW for the 2006 season and now called BMW Sauber, raced in formula one between 1993 and 2005.

112,700 expected at first Valencia GP

Feb.11 (GMM) Organisers of the inaugural European grand prix at Valencia will make available 112,700 tickets for the August street race.

The Spanish sports newspaper Marca reports that the tickets, which if all sold will make the event one of the best attended in formula one, will become available at the end of February.

Vicente Rambla, a spokesman for the Valencia regional government, said construction of the circuit near the city's port is proceeding well.

He said the works are "going so well that in some parts we are ahead of schedule".

Muere Tony Rolt, único superviviente de la primera carrera de F-1 en Silverstone, en 1950

Su nombre podría pasar inadvertido en la fórmula 1. No fue un gran piloto. Pero, cuando la semana pasada falleció, a los 89 años se había convertido ya en el último superviviente de los que compitieron en 1950 en la primera carrera de F-1 que se disputó en Silverstone. Tony Rolt (Bordon, Reino Unido; 1918) disputó con su ERA tres grandes premios sin ganar ningún punto. Pero a los mandos de un Jaguar C logró, junto a Duncan Hamilton, la victoria en Las 24 Horas de Le Mans en 1953.

Cuando eso ocurrió, la parte más interesante de su vida había ya transcurrido. Hijo de un brigada, Rolt estudió Ingeniería y acabó enrolándose en la Brigada del Rifle, con la que en 1940 fue destinado a una misión en las líneas alemanas en Francia. Colaboró en la defensa de Calais y luchó contra la 10ª división Panzer para retrasar su ataque a Dunkerque.

Al final, sin embargo, cayó prisionero y se convirtió en una pesadilla para los alemanes. Estuvo en varias prisiones e intentó escapar de todas hasta que ingresó en el penal de alta seguridad del castillo de Colditz. Y allí ideó, junto a otro lugarteniente, Goldfinch, un plan de escapatoria descabellado.

Goldfinch encontró en la librería de la prisión un manual para construir una nave aérea y decidieron fabricarla. Una noche levantaron un muro en una de las habitaciones de la parte alta del edificio sin que los alemanes lo descubrieran. Y un equipo de unas 50 personas comenzó a desarrollar el proyecto, siempre con luz artificial. La nave debería ensamblarse en una terraza justo el día en que decidieran escapar. Rolt fue uno de los dos elegidos para subirse al artilugio.

Todo parecía dispuesto para la última gran escapada, cuando las fuerzas norteamericanas liberaron el castillo. La nave nunca llegó a volar y nadie sabe si realmente lo habría hecho o si sus tripulantes se habrían estrellado. Pero Rolt fue distinguido con la Cruz Militar y ascendido a mayor.

Transcurría 1945 cuando regresó a Gran Bretaña y decidió reabrir un capítulo que había aparcado: el de piloto. Cuando en 1950 se creó el Mundial de F-1, Rolt y su amigo Peter Walker compartieron el ERA E con el que lograron colocarse en la décima posición de la parrilla en Silverstone. Su aventura duró cuatro vueltas, antes de que rompieran la caja de cambios. Tampoco tuvieron suerte en 1953 y 1955, las otras dos carreras que disputó en el mismo circuito británico.

Era probablemente mejor piloto de resistencia. Además de su victoria, concluyó segundo en Le Mans en 1954. Decidió abandonar las carreras un año después, cuando presenció el fatal accidente del Mercedes 300 SLR de Pierre Bouillion que costó la vida a 90 espectadores.

Después dedicó sus pasos al desarrollo de vehículos con tracción en las cuatro ruedas. Y colaboró en la construcción del único coche de estas características con el que Sterling Moss logró la victoria en la Gold Cup de Oulton Park de F-1. Rolt sobrevivió a su esposa y a una de sus hijas. Pero otros tres hijos acudieron a su entierro.

Super Aguri postpone car launch

Super Aguri have postponed the official launch of their 2008 car while they continue to work on finalising sponsors and drivers for the new season.

The Leafield-based outfit had planned to unveil their SA08 and drivers at Barcelona on February 19. But, while discussions continue to resolve their financial situation, the team have decided to change plans.

Now, team principal Aguri Suzuki and technical director Mark Preston will be available for interviews at the test later this month, where the SA08 is expected to run for the first time.

It is likely that the driver line-up, colour scheme and definitive sponsorship package will unveiled at the season opening Australian Grand Prix instead.

The SA08 passed its official FIA crash tests last week, with the team back testing at Jerez this week having skipped recent running.

Raikkonen: Ferrari still need to improve

World champion Kimi Raikkonen reckons Ferrari still need to improve a lot before the start of the season, despite the impressive times set during winter testing.

The Italian squad's F2008 has been one of the pace-setters in testing since it was unveiled last month, and Raikkonen showed a blistering pace in Bahrain last week, lapping over two seconds quicker than last year's pole position time.

The Finn believes, however, that there is still room for improvement, although he admits he has been pleased with the performance of the new car so far.

"Testing has been going well. This session has also shown problems - small ones - with the F2008. We wanted to get to know the car better, and so we did," Raikkonen was quoted as saying by Gazzetta dello Sport.

"It's a good start for the Ferrari. There have already been improvements. Obviously reliability hasn't come automatically, but two or three laptimes have already been interesting."

He added: "With the new parts the performance will further improve. We've improved in many areas here, now we look forward to the new aerodynamics we'll try out in the Montmelo test. There we will go against our rivals and we'll know where we stand.

"Obviously we still need to improve a lot, but for me it's easier now compared to 2007. And the car has had a good beginning too.

"The decisive step is the next test. And then Melbourne, because only at the first GP we'll know how the teams compare."

The team's technical director Aldo Costa was also happy with the Bahrain test, although he was sorry about the problems that hit their cars on Sunday.

He said: "Everything went well and according to plans. This track has confirmed to be ideal for testing because it allows you to work with a continuity that is unmatched elsewhere, in consistent conditions. The only regret is for Sunday's problems."

Bahrain denies considering night race

Bahrain Grand Prix officials have made it clear that they have no plans to turn their event into a night race, despite saying at the weekend that they were not opposed to the idea.

Sakhir's Chief Operating Officer Shaikh Salman was quoted by Bahraini newspaper Gulf Daily News at the weekend as saying that he was open to the concept of night racing.

But in a statement issued in response to that story, Bahrain officials have insisted that their welcoming of the night race idea does not mean they are looking into the idea themselves.

"The Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) wishes to clarify stories that it is investigating the possibility of staging the Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix as a night race in the future," said the statement.

"Unfortunately the comments given by BIC Chief Operating Officer, Shaikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa, have been taken out of context at their source in the Gulf Daily News, and while the concept of night racing is extremely interesting it is not on the agenda of the BIC.

"Through enjoying very favourable time differences to Formula One's key European and Asian broadcasters the viewing figures for the Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix are among the highest of the year in terms of audience share and viewership.

"As a result we have had no discussions with either the FIA or Formula One Management towards staging our race at night.

"Like the rest of the world, however, we are looking forward with great interest to the inaugural Singapore Grand Prix this September and to the introduction of night racing to Formula One."

Singapore is due to hold F1's first night race later this year, with the Malaysian and Australian Grands Prix both possibilities to follow suit in the future.

Y mentiendonos en la acutualidad... que mal huele lo de Aguri, espero arreglen su situación porque ellos no son ningún grupo inversor que buscan hacerse de oro con esto, aman la competición, el automovilismo, deseaban estar y desean mantenerse en la categoría reina.

Por otro lado.
A Kimi, en realidad... lo veo más feliz que un "8"... como para no estarlo!!!

A ver si durante la temporada, hacemos que se arrepienta de haberse largado de McLaren... (]... aunque la verdad ya quisiera tener a nuestro "ex" piloto de nuevo en nuestras filas...

Feb.13 (GMM) Despite finishing last in the 2007 constructors' championship, McLaren may this year avoid the indignity of occupying the last garage slot in the grand prix pitlanes of the world.



As well as having the highest race numbers - in McLaren's case 22 and 23 in 2008 - finishing the previous year's teams' title last usually means having to take up residence in the farthest pit boxes at each circuit.



However, despite having all its points taken away last season amid the espionage scandal, it seems that McLaren will call the fifth garages home in 2008.



The Finnish daily newspaper Turun Sanomat reports that Bernie Ecclestone has ordered the re-shuffle so that one of F1's 'Big Two' teams can still have access to first class circuit facilities this year.



It is reported that Ecclestone, F1's chief executive, actually wanted Mercedes-powered McLaren to have the third pit area, but Renault - officially third in the championship last year - objected.



At most F1 circuits, the first three pit garages are wider and include better amenities for its personnel and guests.



McLaren would not confirm the Turun Sanomat report.

BMW not ready to beat top teams - Heidfeld

Feb.13 (GMM) Despite recent signs that BMW Sauber is making improvements to its 2008 car, the German team's drivers are not expecting to challenge Ferrari and McLaren for race wins early this season.



As he began the penultimate test of the pre-season at Jerez on Tuesday, the Swiss newspaper Blick quoted Nick Heidfeld as predicting more time as F1's third force in 2008.



"We have not moved closer to McLaren and Ferrari," he reported, adding that the F1.08 does, however, appear to narrowly have an edge on close challengers Renault, Williams and Red Bull.



Heidfeld's Polish teammate, Robert Kubica, confirmed in Spain: "Yes, we still have problems.



"The car is too unstable," he added, also explaining the untrustworthiness of relying on test time sheets.



Kubica said: "Sometimes, we are not as good as the time sheets show us to be. And at other times we are better than the times suggest."

Rosberg is F1's best qualifier - Wurz

Feb.13 (GMM) Alex Wurz has praised his former Williams teammate Nico Rosberg as the best qualifier in formula one.



On all but one qualifying occasion last year, 33-year-old Wurz was beaten to a better grid position by Rosberg.



Wurz's struggle for performance last year preceded his decision to retire from the sport as a racer and switch to Honda as the Japanese team's primary test driver -- a role in which Wurz is credited for being arguably the best in F1.



"Nico developed so much between the 2006 and 2007 seasons," the Austrian veteran told Motorsport Aktuell.



"Especially in qualifying, I think that he is the best in the paddock," Wurz added.



Even without racing in the season finale, Wurz ended 2007 with 13 out of Williams' 20 points, but team co-owner Patrick Head does not think the former McLaren test driver performed strongly last year.



"We did our best to help him, but it did not work," the Toyota-powered team's engineering veteran said.
