Ahora,
joven/veterano = ¿Paffet/DelaRosa?
¿Paffet joven? No, veterano.
¿Pedro joven? No, veterano.

EXCLUSIVE: Richards on Prodrive and Customers cars

It is a well known fact that Formula One will enter a new era in 2008 when customer cars will be legal and with a twelfth team joining the grid, that of David Richards and his Prodrive outfit, a lot of things remained unclear in terms of where he stood on this issue, so we spoke with the team boss to get an insight on the situation….

The clock is ticking and the first question we asked was in regard to what we were going to hear from the team at the time of the British Grand Prix in early July, a time that has been mentioned in the press as date when they will make an announcement, possibly the team’s title sponsor?

“Don’t hold me on the date of the British Grand Prix,” David told us. “I said this summer; we need to have everything in place by the summer and everyone in England thinks that summer means at the British Grand Prix. However, we have signed heads of terms.”

The news doing the rounds at the moment is that the hottest candidate for selling customer cars to the twelfth team on the grid is McLaren.

“We are not hiding the fact that we will do a deal with an existing team,” Richards confirmed. “We are not going to build our own car, we’re not going to develop it, we are going to rely on a partnership with an existing team.”

So, does this also involve drivers being placed as part of the deal?

“It will be natural to choose drivers who already have a relationship with the team, but there is nothing fixed at the moment.”

On that note, what kind of drivers are they looking for to contest their first year in the pinnacle of Motorsport, young rookies, or more experienced racers?

“You need a balance between experience and youth, but we have already seen that bringing a young driver into the sport like Lewis Hamilton can be very positive and very successful.”

Bringing his name to the forefront, we took the opportunity to ask Richards what his point of view was on the latest sensation to hit the sport…

“(Lewis is) The next of the great generation of drivers after Michael Schumacher and Senna. That good, I’m certain”

Back on topic, during his visit at the Bahraini GP the Chairman of Prodrive was quoted as saying that he wants a win-win relationship with the parent team, so how is that going to work?

“Firstly they can amortize their costs across 4 cars; they can share all the data and information from testing and have a combined approach to make the cars more competitive on the track. We also work in an environment where people would like to reduce their overheads. We could take some of their staff, providing career opportunities within our organization if they are ‘stuck’ in a position within their company.”

Is it something like the Red Bull Technology structure in his mind?

“No no, it’s a proper partnership, we do that all the time with our other operations. We have lots of people who are using our rally cars with our support, we have people who run second Aston Martins in sports car racing. We do that all the time.”

Prodrive is not rushing to recruit or build windtunnels, because all the development will come from the … principal team!

“This is down to the principal team. Why do it twice? If you have a company that does all the work, why do it again? If you buy one of our rally cars do you think you have to do your own development? Why not take our advice and go from there? For example these are the suspension settings, take them and run the cars with them. For example, at Le Mans this year, we have private Aston Martins. They will take all the aerodynamic information from us, all of our data and we will provide all the information so they have an equal chance of winning. Naturally, in Formula One, we will be one step behind because of our experience in this environment. We are not thinking that we will come in and, from day one, be as competitive as the Ferraris for example. They have a huge amount of experience, with so many good people there, but we hope to be within the top half of the grid. We will run 2008 cars and not this year’s car.”

Are other teams going to follow this example?

“Red Bull are already working on it, Honda are already working on it,” he replied.

Does this mean that we could already be in the start of synergies and partnerships within the teams? Ferrari and Renault are already supplying engines to Toro Rosso and Red Bull Racing, maybe we will see an added partnership from them next year, while Toyota and Williams are working together this year on the engine and the gearboxes.

“It is better for the sport this way,” said Richards, “It is not good for the sport when you have such a differential from the front of the grid with Ferrari, McLaren to the back of the grid with Spyker. That’s not good for the sport. You have young and talented drivers that are not getting into a competitive car. If you have competitive teams you can bring in drivers and see if they are any good. How can you tell how competitive the drivers of Spyker are. You have no idea! That’s not good for the sport, not good for the drivers, not good for the spectators.”

Will we see Prodrive as a constructor in F1?

“We will have to see how the partnership works. If the partnership works well there will be no reason to change it. If we develop parts or whole cars then maybe we are going to be more independent. We have to see how it goes.”

Prodrive was recently looking for sponsors, but just how tough is it for them to find one with the absence of tobacco advertisers?

“At the moment, there are lots of sponsors trying to be in Formula One. The F1 sponsorship proposition is very strong at the moment.”

Recently Richards commented that he is hoping that by entering the sport he won’t end up with a nightmare situation, but he explained his comments…

“What I meant by that is that, I will not start with a complete blank sheet, with nothing, then build a factory, build a windtunnel. I haven’t got enough time to do that.”

That said, by entering the sport in 2008, the aim is to be both competitive and profitable. Everybody wants to be competitive, but with all the huge team budgets the teams are squeezing their profit in order to give it back to the team for development.

“Williams made a 30mEuro profit last year, that’s not bad,” replied Richards and we couldn’t agree more, even if certain aspects of the media painted a bleak picture for the Grove based squad.

Max Mosley opened up recently the chapter “Green F1” for 2011, but what does Richards think of this change now that he will have a say on the matter having Prodrive in F1?

“I think that many of the ideas are very interesting. Ok, I do not agree with everything, but the basic idea that F1 needs to focus on environmental issues before it becomes irrelevant to the outside world, is important. So we have to look at this area and work on the details, but we can’t ignore it.”

The future in F1 also contains more races and to be more precise, street races. Having Valencia in 2008 as well as Abu Dhabi the question is, will we have another Monaco kind of event?

“When you hear of a street race you think automatically of Monaco, and this race is one of the great shows of the year, but the track is not good for overtaking, so it’s not good from that perspective. The tracks like Valencia and Abu Dhabi are going to be designed by Herman Tilke who understands that we need places to overtake, so they are going to be proper race tracks.”
