Turkish GP: Winners + Losers
Sunday August 27 2006

Star of the Race
Fernando Alonso, Renault, 2nd
Mass damper system? What mass damper system? Fernando Alonso stuck two fingers up at Charlie Whiting, the FIA and whichever team it was that protested the use of the Renault system by pulling off Mission Impossible: Istanbul.

It always used to be said of Michael Schumacher that he could win races that he shouldn't, well today Fernando Alonso came second in a race in which he really should have lost four World Championship points to his arch rival.
He was assisted by Tonio Liuzzi's Toro Rosso and the Safety Car it produced, but Alonso's middle stint in the race was amazing, and for the last 13 laps he resisted the most intense pressure thanks to dextrous use of his onboard control systems and raw pace.

Overtaking Move of the Race
Lap 34, Ralf Schumacher, Toyota on Christian Klien, Red Bull
There were so many to choose from in an overtaking fest that made the heart sing. It was glorious to see two epic races in succession, and this time round the action was thanks to Hermann Tilke's masterpiece of a GP circuit. Ralf Schumacher had one of his cavalier afternoons when he got in the car and thought "hell, let's go for it."

He made some great passing moves into Turn 9 and when cars moved to cover the inside line he simply drove around the outside.

Such is the joy of the track that two cars can run side by side through Turns 1 and 2, Turns 9 and 10 and Turns 12 and 13 so that drivers can attempt or resist overtaking moves by going into corners side by side and see what shakes out the other side without it all ending in carbon fibre.

Ralf steamed around the ouside of Klien in Turn 9 on his way to a barnstorming seventh place. On other days he could just as easily drive into someone and lose his front wing on the opening lap, but today it all worked out.

WINNERS
Felipe Massa, Ferrari, 1st
There's something not quite right about a driver taking his maiden win and feeling a bit guilty that he couldn't let his team-mate through to take it off him. "Thank you! Thank you! Sorry for Michael, but thank you!"

ITV commentator James Allen was coo-ing that we were actually going to hear Ferrari radio transmissions for the very first time as we listened to Massa's engineer, Rod Smedley, advise him about brake temperatures on the parade lap.

Not quite right, as we already heard Chris Dyer yell to Schumi after the German GP that all he had to do was win the last races and he'd be World Champion. However come the race and there was no transmission of radio messages at all until the cars crossed the line.

Massa did everything that was expected of him and was faultless. He quite clearly had the legs on Alonso in every stint of the race, something even Michael couldn't manage. We all know he would have had to have moved over if Schumi had cleared Alonso, but it would have been a greater crowd displeaser than the 2002 Austrian GP if the little guy had been "obliged" to let his No.1 through.

Jenson Button, Honda, 4th
Jenson Button may have been displeased about the speed of his Honda, but his lap times didn't bear that out. For most of the race he was less than ten seconds behind Michael Schumacher who had set the circuit alight in Session 2 of qualifying.
Consistently it was the front four who were two seconds faster than the other cars in the race. That's hardly shameful.

Pedro de la Rosa, McLaren, 5th
De la Rosa showed just how much pace Raikkonen could have had if he hadn't been punted by Scott Speed going into Turn 1. The Spaniard turned in another good race performance with aggressive on-track moves - and also some aggressive off-the-track-in-the-drivers-meeting moves on Michael Schumacher. De la Rosa was one of Schumi's principal critics in a heated drivers' meeting which saw heavy criticism of Schumacher's driving style in Hungary.

Giancarlo Fisichella, Renault, 6th
Though he gets a place in the Winners column, it's touch and go whether Fisi should be in the Losers after cocking up Turn 1. True it could have been a lot worse, in that he might have tipped Alonso into a spin, and so he had one himself instead

But a driver of his experience spinning in front of the field is not good. He then set about to make amends, and but for some stubborn resistance from de la Rosa would have taken 5th

Rubens Barrichello, Honda, 8th
Rubens took a Championship point in the end, but team-mate Jenson Button drove his Honda two seconds a lap faster for about 90% of the race.

ITV's Audience
Having spent the last race watching the German TV coverage, you've got to say that the ITV production is head and shoulders above RTL. It's easy to take for granted the slick coverage from ITV and though we moan and groan about some aspects of it, it's way more compact and to-the point. (Yes, even some of Blunders' analysis) German TV has Niki Lauda and the German equivalent of Steve Rider rambling on and on behind the pit garages, while fans mug at the camera in the background. ITV has the sense to locate Messrs Rider and Blundell in the pitlane where the background is always interesting and changing.

Watching the coverage of Michael Schumacher is also a revelation. Michael on German TV is far more relaxed and has time to give considered answers. Whereas Schumacher's performance for his English-speaking audience is clipped, brief, giving the impression of someone who wants to get away as soon as possible, for his German audience he is relaxed with all the time in the world to talk over any point that might be thrown at him.

For all his English-speaking fans, of which there are very many, it seems a pity that he doesn't give the same time and consideration. Ross Brawn always says he doesn't recognise some of the portraits of Schumi in the English-speaking media, and now it's easy to see why. He does seem markedly different to a German audience.

At the same time, Ralf and Nick Heidfeld seem just the same. Schumi fans should try and see if they can redirect their satellites to get RTL.

LOSERS
Michael Schumacher, Ferrari, 3rd
He may have been up against Fernando Alonso at his most stubborn, but his fate was really in his own hands. Had he not made an error in Qualifying he would have been first in for fuel and tyres after the Safety Car.

Had he not run wide in Turn 8 and lost four seconds with a 1:33.769 lap on Lap 28, then he would have come out in front of Alonso after the second pit-stops.

It made for a fantastic and nailbiting race, though.

Kimi Raikkonen, McLaren, DNF
One of the hazards of starting outside of the front three rows is you can become the victim of other people's accidents. Kimi did nothing wrong and got punted out of the race.

Christian Klien, Red Bull 11th
Klien's opening charge into Turn 1 had Formula Ford written all over it. How he managed not to hit anyone as he locked his brakes and slewed across the rest of the field is one of F1's great mysteries.

That Mark "He's a right royal cockney gee-za" Blundell
A great race such as the 2006 Turkish GP deserves some great quotes and Mark - ve guy what we are alluding to - Blundell didn't let us down.

Talking about Renault's bounceback from the banned damper system:
"These guys are clever guys, they won't lay on their laurels."

However he saved a little beauty for his comment on Schumi's qualifying.
We don't think we're going to get any better than this in 2006. Savour it:

"We've said it before Steve, sometimes, now and again there's a little chink in Schumacher and his armour there just gets chinked away with this move because he runs wide at the first apex and what he's done with this situation is he's blown his first set of tyres and it doesn't give him that credit to put in and understand what he's got underneath him and get his balance ready for the next set."

Legend.
