Ferrari's rivals have been handed a further boost in their hopes of being able to knock the world champions off the top spot this year, with the Italian team's tyre supplier Bridgestone admitting to autosport.com that it is at a major disadvantage because of Michelin's ability to run third cars.

With Ferrari already believed to be mildly concerned about the pace of the F2004M, as speculation grows the team is considering bringing its F2005 in earlier than originally planned, the head of motorsport of the team's tyre supplier now fears that circumstances could further hinder its hopes.

That is because McLaren, one of Michelin's top teams, has qualified to run a third car during the Friday practice of grand prix weekends – and the new tyre and engine regulations for 2005 mean that the extra mileage for that machine will be massively important in choosing the right tyres.

Speaking to autosport.com about the situation, Hirohide Hamashima admitted that Ferrari is not going to have an easy time in picking the right tyres for a grand prix weekend – because the only teams it supplies that can run a third car are the back of the field Jordan and Minardi outfits.

“It is highly advantageous for a top team to run a third car,” said Hamashima. “Michelin can find a good reference point there and there is nothing we can do to prevent that.

“It is most likely the third car will try both soft and hard compounds. From that we can get a general idea on how the tarmac is, but after all it is another company's products so it is difficult to calculate our reference point. We will have to learn to make a correct choice from the limited mileage.”

Hamashima adds that the fact it knows it will not be able to call on the use of a third car means it may have to take a more conservative approach to its tyre choice for the first few races of the campaign – while rivals Michelin can be more aggressive because they know they will be able to experiment more.

“We would like to find out how things are on a Friday, but not many of our teams will want to run because they would like to save the engine mileage,” he added. “The only way to find out is to do a race distance on the Friday and then we can find out the tarmac conditions and climatic condition – but only teams with a third car can do that. The third car is going to be the key.

“We have already decided on the two specifications we will bring to the track, so we have had to have an educated guess to bring in the correct range. For the first few races, there could be a huge difference between Michelin and us – especially if one brings a conservative range while the other brings an aggressive range.”

Se que no se ha vuelto a decir nada... y que Pedro estará en Barhein y que Würz sigue sin probar el MP4-20, y esta semana entrenarán en Paul Ricard con el MP4-19B así que Würz solo tendría la supuesta oportunidad de probarlo dentro de 15 dias, a parte de todas esas premisas en "teoria" Barhein es la 3ª prueba y la el fin de la supuesta confirmación de Mclaren para las 3 primeras carreras para Pedro como 3er piloto... por otra parte es indiscutible que en los 2 primeros GP'S Pedro lo ha bordado¡¡¡ y que parece que en Mclaren estan muy satisfechos con él... así que eso nos devería dar la suficiente tranquilidad como para pensar que pedro seguirá siendo el 3er de Mclaren...

A mi me parecería raro no ver a Pedro el Viernes en Montmeló. Aparte de ser el GP local, él ha rodado con el MP4/20 en Montmeló y Wurz no.

Aunque también he de decir que me parecería normal, si se solucionan sus problemas, que Wurz también participara los Viernes. No porque Pedro lo haga mejor o peor, sino porque el austriaco también objetivamente lleva muchos años trabajando en McLaren y no estaría mal como un cierto premio o reconocimiento.

Aunque si Pedro pudiera hacer la mayoría de Viernes, o todos, sería positivo. (Obviamente).

Desde luego y aunque no nos guste, tb Wurz se lo merece (por antigüedad, más que Pedro) apero hay que reconocer que Pedro ha estado fantástico en estas 2 carreras, no ya por la "pole" del viernes en Australia y el 2º puesto en Malasia (el primero fue Zonta con un nuevo "pepino" llamado Toyota con el que Trulli fue 2º de la carrera)... sino por que ha cumplido el papel que tenía asignado, rodar y rodar, sin incidentes (muy importante), rápido y en tandas largas

Creo que McLaren tiene una difícil papeleta, aunque como Ñimi y Juan Pablo no empiecen a tener buenos resultados, quién sabe si el "cabeza de turco" será Pedro (a ellos no los van a sustituir... al menos de momento )

PD: A ver que tal se le da Barhein a Pedro... recordad que nunca ha pilotado allí y el circuito se las trae con la arena sobre la pista, sobre todo los viernes, será una "prueba de fuego" más.

Buenos días
"Prueba de fuego", seguro. Pero es cierto que Wurz merece también esa oportunidad. Sinceramente sería un detalle muy feo por parte del equipo McLaren si no se le reconociera a Álex el tiempo y la dedicación durante estos años. En esto hay que ser justos.

Y no vamos a pensar que a los de McLaren nos abandona siempre la suerte...
En todo caso, el viernes ya podemos empezar a "soplar" todos durante los entrenos para limpiar la pista resbaladiza, que la arena es muy traicionera. Quizás deberían construir también un compuesto-goma para "arena" . Ya que se las ingenian con todo, por qué no..

Estaba claro que llegaría todo esto... Es decir, que Ron Dennis debiera justificar el beneficio que aporta al equipo contar con un 3er coche en los entrelnos libres de los viernes.
Cuando empezó a "saltar" la noticia sobre la posibilidad de que McLaren se acogiera a esta ventaja que se adoptó por consenso entre los equipos, yo ya saltaba de alegría al pensar en la posibilidad de Pedro rodando en pista. ¿Recordáis que dejé pegada esa noticia "antigua" de un 15 de diciembre de 2004 en que aparecía como "incertidumbre"?
Me dijeron: "prepárate, Raquel, tal y como eres tú, porque de ser así y confirmarse vas a tener que oír muchas veces que -dado el caso de que Mclaren recupere el lugar que se espera del equipo- os estáis beneficiendo de una medida que estaba pensada en pro de equipos pequeños y no para una escudería grande como lo es McLaren, por mucho que la temporada haya sido desastrosa".
Uffff... cómo duele en ese momento. Pero va bien que "te bajen de las nubes" para estar preparada para los golpes .
Como dice "mi amigo Ron", no nos sentimos orgullosos, pero no estamos explotando cosa alguna que no se contemple explícitamente en el reglamento, a pesar de que dicha norma consensuada no estuviera pensada a fin de beneficiar más a un equipo puntero.
Quienes más beneficiados hemos salido de ella, está claro: todos los que estamos en pro de Pedro .Punto.

Dennis Defiant over Third Car

McLaren boss Ron Dennis has hit back at claims from rivals Ferrari that his team are gaining an unfair advantage by running a third car in Friday practice at Grands Prix.

The Woking-based team's disappointing form in 2004 led to slumping to fifth overall in the Constructors' Championship - which meant they were eligible for a rule agreed by all the teams that allows the bottom six teams to run a third car on Fridays.

Although Ferrari technical director Ross Brawn went on the attack in Malaysia last weekend, claiming that it was unfair for a top team like McLaren to run the extra car because the rule was originally designed to help the smaller outfits, Dennis is defiant about his team's use of the car.

"The reality is that the teams unanimously agreed to the process," said Dennis. "We're not exploiting anything that doesn't exist in the rules. If we went into the last Grand Prix and we were in a position that would put us fourth in the points, we would have done it. We are not proud of our 2004 performance.

"Equally if we are out of the top four, under the regulations we are entitled to run a car and we feel comfortable doing it."


Dennis himself, however, thought differently last year.

"I would be very surprised if it happened," he said of the third car rule in September last year. "It was really never designed for any top teams to take advantage. It's pretty simple to see how this will unfold."

The only way that the rule can be changed is for there to be unanimous agreement among the teams - something that is almost certainly impossible to achieve at the moment because of a major split between Ferrari and the rest of the grid over testing limits.

Buenos días a todos

No es viernes hoy, ni "viernes de Libres", es jueves -si aún me atinan las neuronas-. Y es que ya nos lo empezábamos a pasar bien los jueves (¿o no?)

Aparte de corregir (como de costumbre) esa errata en el uso de la negrita [¡Qué momento! Hoy hace un año], decir que estaba pensando que una de las cosas que me dan pena de verdad es no haber podido guardar conversaciones "del CHAT de los VIERNES." Hubo algunos días y algunos momentos que... ... francamente fueron de antología. Por favor, qué risas mezcladas con nervios, excitación y ansiedad de tiempos, números con sueño -quizás, mejor dicho insomnio- división multicelular de los nicks de los que estabámos allí cada vez que el chat nos echaba ()... Para qué contar, ¡qué escenas! Una gozada Cómo sería que un día recuerdo que PCA se fue poniendo "PCA 2" y, al momento, "PCA tris" (qué risa...). Y es que a veces había por allí una multiplicación de las personalidades que cualquiera se aclaraba. Hasta el propio PCA, con lo serio y prudente que suele ser, siempre decía: "esto es una locura... este chat es una locura..." y llegaba a perder un poquito la contención tambien.

Sí, "una locura", pero productiva en grado sumo, indiscutiblemente. Aparte de lo que yo llegué a aprender ahí de numeritos, tiempos, previsiones de estrategias, historia y curiosidades, etc... ¡Y en esos estados! Los vaticinios de Gramolo sobre el posible tiempazo que íbamos a tener en pista eran, como mínimo, sorprendentes. Los cuadraba a la milésima.

Yossi, y qué decir del agradecimiento que te debemos a ti. Realmente difícil de expresar...
