For some time now, there has been speculation that de la Rosa's main backer, Spanish oil giant, Repsol-YPF, had decided not to extend their contract with the Leafield based team because the financial demands for the continued sponsorship from the team had increased considerably from the 2000 season. Last year, the Spanish company committed USD$ 6.5 million to the sponsorship and it is thought Arrows was asking for an increase to at least USD$ 10 million for 2001. But when Formula1.com contacted Repsol-YPF this morning at their Madrid headquarters, a press department spokesperson said: "We have no official statement on the matter. All I can say is that negotiations with the team (Arrows) are still continuing." When asked directly if this meant that de la Rosa may still have a chance to drive for the outfit in 2001, the spokesperson responded: "I cannot say that. All I can say is the negotiations with the team are still continuing and we will issue a statement when everything is finalised". At the same time, however, the team's Media Communications Manager responded to the Repsol-YPF statements by saying: "I can definitely say, 100%, that the two race drivers for the Arrows F1 team in 2001 will be Jos Verstappen and Enrique Bernoldi. There is not doubt about this." Questioned about a possible test driver role for de la Rosa, since the Repsol-YPF insist negotiations are still on-going, the team's Media Communications Manager responded: "All I can say is that we are looking for a test driver. I cannot say who that will be as we don't yet know." ANIMO PEDRO!!!! CON 2 Y UN PALO!!!!!!! |
