Q:How damaging has the customer car saga been in terms of the uncertainty its created? Youre obviously trying to bring in sponsors and so on.
You know, I hate to say customer car. For me a customer car is if I go to Ferrari and say sell me your car from last year, and I go and drive it. We have a different story. We have Red Bull Technology working for two teams. Obviously theyre taking a lot of designs and stuff for one or the other teams, but at the end of the day our car is quite different from theirs because we have a different engine, and if you have a different engine you have a different gearbox, a different radiator, different sidepod, different engine cover. Half the car is different. Obviously thats not enough in the minds of some people. But generally the problem is that some people dont understand that times have changed. Even in car manufacturing today Magna is building a car for BMW or whoever. In the old days it never would happen. Today certain things are made in a different way for reasons of synergies, cost saving. And thats what we are doing. At the end of the day F1 has 10 teams instead of 12 teams. Its a disaster already that F1 doesnt have enough teams to compete. F1 has manufacturers who are working out of huge budgets, so if the independent teams wouldnt be there any more, whats it going to be are we going to have six teams or what? Theres one company putting unbelievable big amount of money in, but trying to use synergies out of one technology centre. To try to kill this, I think its a big mistake. Q:Do you understand the complaints of people like Frank Williams? I understand Frank. He built up a wind tunnel, and he says I can feed one car with the wind tunnel, and they can feed two cars. Fine. But again there must be allowed different business models, and if theyre not allowed, youre going to see more teams dying. Thats sometimes a little bit frustrating. Again, when we did Toro Rosso, we had a clear thing in our minds to do it differently, to work with outsourcing, to work in a different way. And I think we have a great model. |
