De la Rosa confirmed for China

McLaren have finally confirmed that Pedro de la Rosa will race for them at this weekend's Chinese Grand Prix.

The absence of an official announcement from the team over the past week had prompted rumours that GP2 champion Lewis Hamilton could get a late call-up after testing for the team last week, but that speculation has been put to bed.

McLaren have always said that de la Rosa was 'highly likely' to finish the season for them, even though confirmation of his continuation with the team has only come today.

De la Rosa's position is only confirmed for Shanghai, however, with the team opting to make a decision on a race-by-race basis. It is highly unlikely the team will opt to make a change before the Japanese Grand Prix though, which takes place just one week after China.

McLaren F1 CEO Martin Whitmarsh said recently that de la Rosa's experience of racing in Japan, where he won F3, Formula Nippon and GT championships, made him an obvious choice for Suzuka.

"Pedro has won three titles in Japan and knows Suzuka very well, and that is a circuit where it really helps to know," said Whitmarsh. "That is a logical decision."
