Force India's 2009 launch was to be held in one of the hotels in Mumbai that has been attacked the past week. It would be pretty bad for Mallya if the attacks are going to have serious economic consequences. Especially since the Indian billionare spends a lot of his own money on the team and is already experiencing financial difficulties.

In the third quarter of 2008 his airline Kingfisher had a 90% greater loss than was the was the case the third quarter in 2007. Mallya has already had to say goodbye to his plan of making Kingfisher more profitable by taking it to the stock exchange in 2009. Instead he 'refreshes' the airline with parts of the profits from his beer company that has the same name.

Kingfisher beer is indeed successful internationally, yet it's not a botomless pit of gold. The initial investment of 710 million in the Scottish Whyte & Mackay has to be amortised.

Force India is a team that has said goodbye to small sponsors and lives with the financial backing of a handful of industrial multinationals. This has lead to the income of 60 million from external sponsors (dating back from Spyker period) having shrunk to a third of that. Mallya would have a bigger funding gap than expected, we're talking about a 100 million loss of Kingfisher Airline here.

The income from the Concorde Agreement only covers 40 million. The week before last Mallya talked about possible fund raising in a pressconference...that was held in the Trident Oberoi hotel, the other one that was attacked in Mumbai last week.

Pantano "abandoned" by F1 teams

By Steven English and Michele Lostia Wednesday, December 3rd 2008, 11:25 GMT

Giorgio PantanoGiorgio Pantano says he feels abandoned by Formula One with no teams looking at him despite him winning this season's GP2 championship.

The 29-year-old Italian, who raced for Jordan in 2004, beat Bruno Senna and Sebastien Buemi - who are both being considered for F1 race seats - to the GP2 title this year, but has no options himself - the first time since GP2's inception in 2005 that its champion has not found a drive in F1.

"I challenge anyone to have a CV as good as mine," Pantano told Autosprint. "I won two karting world titles, three European, three Italian, German F3, GP2 and was always at the front in F3000. But now I don't have a seat in F1, is this a joke?

"That's what it's like now, if you don't get in touch with people, no one looks for you. I feel abandoned.

"The only person behaving fairly has been Ecclestone. I called him a few days ago and after ten minutes he called me back. The only real drives still available are at Honda and Toro Rosso. Bernie told me that if anything moves, I'll be the first to know.

"But I feel total indifference towards me. I read of Senna and Buemi but, really, what have they done? At this point, a guy in my situation must think that being a racing driver is not advantageous, doing another job would be better."

Pantano believes that a driver's talent is no longer relevant if he cannot bring substantial financial backing to a team.

"Money is becoming the priority in order to race, talent doesn't exist any more," he said. "I think I could still do six or seven years in F1 at high levels.

"I would just like someone to let me test an F1 car. Once the test is done, they'd tell me whether I could be a possible world champion or not. That would give me peace of mind.

"I just want a credible test, a real chance that puts me in the conditions of being properly assessed."

Paffett and Berger to make Force India move?

Fri 05 Dec, 03:51 PM

McLaren-Mercedes test driver and former DTM Champion Gary Paffett has moved into contention for a drive at Force India in F1 in 2009 - but former STR chief Gerhard Berger insists he will be making no such similar move.

Gary Paffett and Gerhard Berger could join forces at Force India F1 in 2009, it has been rumoured, following the re-sale of Scuderia Toro Rosso back to parent company Red Bull Racing and continuing uncertainty over FIF1's driver line-up next year.

Having sold his stake in STR, ten-time grand prix-winner Berger now has no active role within the grand prix paddock, but he has made it clear that he may well be back one day [see separate story - click here]. Though he has rubbished the Force India talk, the Austrian does acknowledge that his absence is more likely to be a temporary rather than a permanent one.

"There is nothing to it," the 49-year-old insisted in an interview with Austrian news agency APA of the speculation linking him to a possible future involvement at the Silverstone-based squad. "There have been no discussions, and I have no interest.

"On the contrary, I am open to something else. Formula 1 is and remains my life, but as for the current rumours, nothing is on the table at the moment."

Meanwhile, British newspaper The Sun has claimed that 2005 DTM Champion and long-time McLaren-Mercedes test driver Gary Paffett has entered the race to drive for FIF1 next season - like fellow tin-top star Paul di Resta and McLaren colleague Pedro de la Rosa, the erstwhile McLaren/Autosport BRDC Young Driver of the Year's name coming into the frame thanks to the Woking-based outfit's new technical and engine supply deal with the former Jordan, Midland and Spyker concern.

Force India managing director and team principal Vijay Mallya has admitted that he would be 'hard-pressed to ignore' advice from McLaren on drivers should it come his way, even if 2008 incumbents Giancarlo Fisichella and Adrian Sutil are both adamant they have concrete deals already in place.

Paffett to get F1 chance

By CHRIS HOCKLEY

Published: 04 Dec 2008
rigTeaserImage
BRITAINS forgotten man of F1, Gary Paffett, could finally make the Grand Prix grid next season.

The long-time McLaren Mercedes test driver has emerged as a contender for a seat with F1 minnows Force India.

The chance has come about thanks to McLarens recent technological tie-up with Indian tycoon Vijay Mallyas squad.

Mallya, whose Silverstone-based team will use Mercedes engines in 2009, says he is open to suggestions from McLaren about drivers.

And 27-year-old Paffett, who has test experience with McLaren going back to 2001 and is highly regarded by the team, is an obvious contender.

But he may have to go head-to-head for the main chance with good friend and fellow star of the DTM series, Scot Paul di Resta, who has also been linked with a Force India drive.

Paffett has racked up nearly 20,000 test miles in F1. But he has also been testing new Mercedes DTM cars and could yet end up spearheading the manufacturers 2009 challenge in the hi-tech touring car series.

Meanwhile both of Force Indias current drivers, Adrian Sutil and Giancarlo Fisichella, are adamant they have contracts that are valid for next season.

Fisichella said: "I originally signed a two-year contract which was reviewed in September to incorporate the McLaren deal."
