ELMS forced to cancel Zolder round due to a lack of entries

A lack of entries has forced the organisers of the European Le Mans Series to cancel the second round of the championship, which was to be held at Zolder on May 20.

Just 21 cars took part in the opening race at Paul Ricard last weekend and only 19 entries were registered for the Belgian race.

Following a meeting between ELMS promoter Patrick Peter, ACO vice president Pierre Fillon, FIM WEC general manager Gerard Neveu and ACO sports director Vincent Beaumesnil (ACO Sports Director) at Ricard, and in consultation with the teams, it was decided to write off the event.

In a press release Peter cited the reason for the cancellation as a chance to regroup and allow time to gain the targeted minimum of 25 cars for the British round of the now-four-race series at Donington Park on July 15.

"This decision, the outcome of a long discussion, was taken because the number of entrants (19) for the Belgian round was judged to be insufficient to ensure that the race unfolded in the best possible manner to ensure media fallout worthy of a six-hour event," the release stated.

"The various partners involved in the European Le Mans Series have given themselves the time to assemble a field of 25 cars minimum for Donington.

"To achieve this objective, discussions have begun between the different partners to find solutions to attract more entrants for the various categories, in particular GTE, FLM and GTC.

"For the latter widening the range of eligible cars is being studied, and will be confirmed as soon as possible according to the results of the technical assessment carried out by the ACO."

The ELMS and American Le Mans Series make up for 25 of the 55 Le Mans 24 Hours entries, and Fillon says the aim for the European Series, which does not run LMP1 prototypes, is to have 35 cars on the grid in 2013.

The release also stated that, subject to an FIA waiver, a certain number of ELMS teams may be accepted for the Spa-Francorchamps round of the WEC on May 6.

Lo que me temía. El WEC se va a cepillar las European Le Mans Series.

Pues una mierda pinchada en un palo porque el verdadero espiritu de las carreras de resistencia reside en los LMP2 privados y así se los van a cargar.

Viper set for factory return in the American Le Mans Series in 2012

Chrysler will return to endurance racing later this year after the manufacturer announced a new racing programme for the SRT Viper in the American Le Mans Series.

SRT Viper Racing is set to make its debut mid-season with an SRT Viper GTS-R, officials announced at the New Your Auto Show on Wednesday.

Chrysler has partnered with Riley Technologies to design and build the car over the past two years, while the car maker also confirmed that it had already signed Kuno Wittmer, Dominik Farnbacher and Marc Goossens as its three drivers.

"Racing has been a significant part of the illustrious history of Viper not only with significant wins on the track, but also in the continued development of the street cars - and our new 2013 SRT Viper models are proof of those lessons learned," said Ralph Gilles, President and CEO of Chrysler's SRT group.

"Now with our new team and the launch of the GTS-R, we're excited and proud to begin writing more chapters in the racing history of the Viper later this summer."

The Viper dominated GT racing in the ALMS and at Le Mans for over a decade, winning the 24-hour race each year from 1998 to 2000 in the category.

The original Viper GTS-R made its racing debut back in 1996.

"I don't think it's possible to overstate the significance of the SRT Viper returning to the top level of professional sports car racing," said ALMS president Scott Atherton.

"The Chrysler Group has a long, storied and very successful history of competing with the American Le Mans Series. We would be hard-pressed to come up with a better scenario than having the brand return with the simultaneous introduction of both the new production car and the competition version. What a great way for SRT Viper to come back to racing."

Audi signs former F1 driver Marc Gene as its reserve driver for Le Mans 24 Hours

Audi has signed Peugeot refugee Marc Gene as a reserve driver for the Le Mans 24 Hours.

The 38-year-old Spaniard had been part of Peugeot's Le Mans effort from its inception in 2007 to its abrupt cancellation at the end of 2011, taking victory at Le Mans along the way.

In addition to being Audi's standby for Le Mans, Gene will also race one of the team's new R18 ultras in the Spa round of the World Endurance Championship in May, substituting for the Timo Bernhard, who is still not fully recovered from his Sebring testing crash.

"At our first meetings I immediately had the impression that Marc will blend well with our sports car squad," said head of Audi Sport Wolfgang Ullrich.

"We very quickly reached an agreement. It's very unfortunate that Timo Bernhard won't be able to compete for us at the second WEC round at Spa as planned. At the same time, Im pleased to see his recovery making significant progress. Thats why were sticking to our original plan of having him run at the Le Mans 24 Hours."

Audi has already confirmed Berhard, Andre Lotterer, Marcel Fassler, Benoit Treluyer, Allan McNish, Dindo Capello, Tom Kristensen, Romain Dumas, Loic Duval, Oliver Jarvis, Marco Bonanomi and Mike Rockenfeller as the race drivers for its four-car Le Mans entry.

----------------

GRAN NOTICIA.

Audi's new hybrid Le Mans car leads first World Endurance Championship practice at Spa

Audi dominated the first free practice session for the World Endurance Championship six hour race at Spa Francorchamps with Benoit Treluyer setting the pace in one of the R18 e-tron quattro hybrid cars.

The French driver's time of 2m04.434s was not quite matched by compatriot Romain Dumas in the conventional R18 Ultra - which was 0.044 seconds slower. Both times were set early in the 90 minute session.

Rinaldo Capello set the third quickest time before handing over to Tom Kristensen in the second e-tron machine while the Marco Bonanami/Oliver Jarvis Audi Sport North America entered R18 was fourth.

The Rebellion Lolas headed the petrol times, with Andrea Belicchi outpacing Nick Heidfeld's sister car. Both were kept honest by Pescarolo's Judd-powered Dome S102.5, which in the hands of Sebastian Bourdais was seventh quickest.

Jonny Kane was eighth fastest in the Strakka HPD, which ended the session in the barriers at La Source when Nick Leventis locked up going into the hairpin.

The #49 Pecom Racing ORECA-Nissan was quickest in LMP2 in the hands of Soheil Ayari, ahead of Alexander Sims, who impressed on his first outing in the Status Lola Coupe. Third was the Starworks HPD, which features a driving line-up that includes former Le Mans Series champion Stephane Sarrazin and Ryan Dalziel.

Gianmaria Bruni set the GT pace in the AF Corse Ferrari with a time of 2m20.916s. The F458 Italia was four tenths quicker than its nearest rival, Marc Lieb's Felbermayr Porsche.

Lucas Ordonez joins DeltaWing test roster

Lucas Ordonez will drive the Nissan DeltaWing in the coming weeks after being added to the programme's test and development line-up.

The 27-year-old Spaniard has close links with Nissan, having began his racing career in its GT Academy in 2008 and helped the Nissan-powered Sigantech squad clinch last year's LMP2 crown in the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup.

Now he will join DeltaWing race driver Marino Franchitti at Magny-Cours and Aragon as the test programme ramps up ahead of the Le Mans 24 Hours.

"To be involved in the development of an innovative car like this is another big step in the career of a racing driver," Ordonez said.

"It was very emotional to be asked by Nissan Europe to test such an important project. I am delighted that they believe in me to help with the work on this prototype car.

"I can't wait to get in the car, focus and give the best feedback I can to help the development of the project. To be involved in the development of an innovative car like this is another big step in the career of a racing driver."

Ordonez will be the fourth member of the DeltaWing test team, joining Franchitti, FIA GT1 world champion Michael Krumm and multiple Super GT title winner Satoshi Motoyama. The latter trio will race the car at Le Mans (although outside of the official classification) while Ordonez will be in the LMP2 Greaves Motorsport Ztyek-Nissan.
