CITA(BITTER @ Aug 21 2011, 08:44 PM) *

Toyota announces 2012 Le Mans return with hybrid LMP1 car

Toyota has confirmed that it will make a fully-fledged return to the Le Mans 24 Hours next year with a petrol hybrid LMP1 car, as predicted by AUTOSPORT in June.

The programme will mark Toyota's first full-scale Le Mans bid since its GT-One car of 1998 and '99. Toyota had already rejoined the LMP1 ranks as engine supplier to Rebellion Racing this year.

The new car will enter several other World Endurance Championship rounds alongside Le Mans. Its chassis will be constructed by Toyota Motorsport GmbH - formerly the firm's Formula 1 operation - with the engine coming from the Toyota Motor Corporation in Japan.

Tadashi Yamashina, Toyota Motor Corporation Senior Managing Officer and TMG chairman, said the hybrid technology element was key to Toyota's return to sportscar racing's top flight.

"Toyota Motor Corporation has entered Le Mans before but by using our hybrid technology this time will be a completely new challenge," he said.

"We want to write a new page in the history of the Le Mans 24 Hours, as well as in the FIA World Endurance Championship, through our use of hybrid technology.

"In addition, we aim to learn from the experience of competing in such a challenging motorsport environment to enhance our production car technology.

"Le Mans is a legendary race and I would like to thank the ACO and the FIA for their constructive and positive cooperation over the last few months."

A Toyota statement said the new car "is planned to take part in a roll-out around the turn of the year prior to an extensive test schedule in early 2012."

Toyota's previous Le Mans programme saw it take pole position and finish second in the 1999 race, before it switched its attention to its forthcoming F1 operation.

Los colores serán blanco y rojo que son los de la marca. Ese negro (ni idea si al final seguirá o no) no me extrañaría nada que estuviese reservado para un sponsor potente. Panasonic siempre ha estado muy ligado a Toyota.

ORECA to assist Toyota with Le Mans 24 Hours project

Toyota Motorsport has partnered with ORECA to provide support for its return to the Le Mans 24 Hours next year.

The French squad will assist the Japanese manufacturer as it prepares to return to the historic race with its own LMP1 car in 2012.

The partnership will begin in the coming weeks.

"It's a very big day for ORECA," said ORECA president Hugues de Chaunac. "To be chosen by Toyota Motorsport GmbH is a huge reward for the work we've done in recent years.

"ORECA has proven its worth at the highest level of endurance racing, winning the 12 Hours of Sebring in 2011 and finishing three straight times in the top 5 at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

"Thanks to its know-how, ORECA now has the opportunity to work with the biggest automobile manufacturer, and on a project that's particularly interesting.

"We are proud to support Toyota Motorsport GmbH in this challenge and we're looking forward to an exciting future."

Alex Wurz to race Toyota's new Le Mans car

Alex Wurz is set to be announced as the lead driver for Toyota's return to Le Mans in 2012.

AUTOSPORT understands that the Austrian will be revealed as one of the line-up for the Japanese manufacturer's new LMP1 project on Monday morning.

Wurz has been part of Peugeot's LMP1 programme since leaving Formula 1 at the end of the 2007 season, including victory in the Le Mans 24 Hours in 2009 - 13 years after his previous triumph in the race as a rookie in the Joest Porsche.

He also contested 69 grands prix with the Benetton, McLaren and Williams teams, in a spread-out racing career that saw him spend a long period as McLaren's test and reserve driver.

Toyota's 2012 LMP1 project will be its first top-line sportscar programme since it ran its GT-One at Le Mans in 1998 and '99, taking second place in the latter event.

Toyota signs Alex Wurz, Nicolas Lapierre and Kazuki Nakajima for new LMP1 programme

Toyota has announced Alex Wurz, Nicolas Lapierre and Kazuki Nakajima as the driver line-up for its World Endurance Championship programme with its new hybrid LMP1 car.

The new Toyota will contest selected WEC rounds, including the Le Mans 24 Hours, as the Japanese firm returns to top-line sportscar racing for the first time since its Le Mans bids of the late 1990s.

AUTOSPORT revealed yesterday that two-time Le Mans winner and ex-Formula 1 racer Wurz would move from Peugeot's LMP1 programme to lead the Toyota project.

"As soon as I heard about the possibility to join the team I was instantly excited and keen to be involved," said Wurz. "I love endurance racing and I have been a fan of Le Mans since my childhood so I have great memories of Toyotas competing there, particularly the GT-One which was a really sexy, cool-looking car.

"As an ambitious Le Mans racer, this heritage combined with the immense technical capabilities at TMG makes a very attractive combination."

Lapierre has established a sportscar career with ORECA - which will work with Toyota on the programme - in recent seasons, with the 27-year-old Frenchman part of the winning crew at this year's Sebring 12 Hours.

He said he was honoured to be chosen by Toyota and excited by its decision to run a hybrid.

"To be selected by a company like Toyota for such a new and interesting project is a proud moment for me," said Lapierre. "We are at the beginning of a big challenge and I am very excited.

"TMG has some very impressive capabilities and, together with the hybrid system, we have the potential to develop a really strong car. I am interested to experience the hybrid system for the first time; this adds a different aspect to our challenge and we have to consider some different strategic factors.

"It's great to be involved at the beginning with this technology and I hope it will give us a performance advantage."

The LMP1 deal marks a return to top-level international motorsport for former Williams F1 driver and long-time Toyota protege Nakajima, who returned to Japanese domestic racing this season after losing his grand prix seat at the end of 2009.

"To return to Le Mans, and to take part in this new championship, means a lot to Toyota so I am very honoured to be a part of it," said the 26-year-old Japanese.

"Le Mans will be a new experience for me but it is one I am very much looking forward to. The challenge of Le Mans is famous throughout motorsport so I can't wait to race there for the first time.

"Obviously it is a new experience but I am familiar with endurance racing thanks to my time in Japanese Super GT and this will help me to adjust."

The three drivers are already working in Toyota's simulator ahead of the new car's track debut early in 2012.

-----------------------
