Mexican Martinez to replace Servia

By David Malsher Wednesday, September 12th 2007, 13:53 GMT

David Martinez has been confirmed as a Forsythe Championship Racing driver for the final two rounds of the Champ Car season.

The Mexican, who made his series debut for Forsythe in the 2006 finale, will replace Oriol Servia as Paul Tracy's teammate in both Surfers Paradise, Australia and Mexico City.

He said: "I'm very happy to be working with Forsythe Championship Racing. They gave me my first drive in Champ Car last year and it went pretty well. I'm looking forward to driving the new DP01, it seems like a really good racecar.

"I'm going to get some testing in the new car at Sebring before we go to Australia, which will give me a good chance to work with the team and get back up to speed.

"I'll have to learn the track in Australia , so it will be a challenge but when we get to Mexico City I'm looking forward to having a great weekend."

Last year, Martinez caused a stir at his home race when he outqualified and outraced fellow debutant and teammate Buddy Rice, who was subbing for the injured Paul Tracy.

In the announcement today, Forsythe's VPO Neil Micklewright, said: "David did a good job for us last year in Mexico City, qualifying in the top ten and running a very consistent race. Even though he hasn't driven the DP01 yet, we learned last year that he adapts quickly to new cars.

"Our test in Sebring [in two weeks' time] will give him some good seat time. Don't forget he completed every race lap during the 2006 Atlantic Championship, so he has the patience to keep his nose clean and drive within his limits."

Both Micklewright and team-owner Jerry Forsythe paid tribute to Servia, who stood in for Tracy for two races when the 2003 champion hurt his back in practice at Long Beach, and then replaced Mario Dominguez in the No7 car.

Despite not competing at two events this year, the Catalan is currently sixth in the championship.

Said Forsythe: "Oriol did a tremendous job for us. He came into the team quickly and really shined. I wish him the best of luck in the future," while Micklewright added: "It is a shame we aren't able to keep Oriol as well.

"He has done a great job this year and has been a valuable member of Forsythe Championship Racing."

Larga vida a Uri ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

Suerte Uri!

Paul Tracy says changes are coming to his Forsythe Racing Champ Car team following yet another disappointing season.

"If you're a Champ Car fan you'll be well aware that at Forsythe Championship Racing, we spent the summer pissing in the dark on set-up," he writes in his autosport.com racing column. "What we didn't realise until just before Zolder - our 11th round - is that we've been pissing both in the dark and into the wind.

"Not a pretty picture."

Tracy says the addition of Tom Brown as the team's Technical Director following Elkhart Lake has given him hope that the situation can be reversed.

"We lost our way big time in the middle of the season just through not having the basic set-up right," says Tracy. "We had it running like an old Lola - nose-up, tail-down - and it needs to be the other way round on the DP01. Once Tom arrived, that was the first thing he corrected. He has a better understanding of the car, and now we're going in the right direction."

"I see good things happening, and about freakin' time!"

Tracy says while he's encouraged by the upcoming changes within the team, the same can't be said for the most recent decision to drop teammate Oriol Servia for the last two races of the season in favour of David Martinez.

He is probably the closest teammate I've had in my career in terms of what we want and need from a car," explained Tracy.

"Right from the get-go of his deal, I think it was made pretty clear that this might happen. It was a race-by-race gig, and we need a Mexican driver for the Mexico City race."

"It's sad. Oriol's done a really good job for us, he's been a really good teammate and he's also been useful."

Having been dropped by Forsythe Championship Racing to make way for commercial considerations, Oriol Servia will make a swift return, both to action and to the PKV Racing team that he ran with in 2006.

The Spaniard made a strong impression while standing in for the injured Paul Tracy at Forsythe earlier in the season, and was retained when Mario Dominguez's three-race deal expired, but was reluctantly released to make way for Mexican David Martinez ahead of the final two rounds. Now, with Tristan Gommendy doubtful for the trip to Surfers Paradise, PKV has moved to field a known quantity in the #22 Pay By Touch Panoz for the tricky street circuit.
“Unfortunately, Tristan had an unresolved business situation that will prevent him from competing this weekend in Australia,” PKV general manager Mark Johnson revealed, “He is continuing to try and resolve the situation, and we have high hopes that he will return to the team for the Mexico City race.

“Fortunately for us, Oriol was available this weekend and, given his proven talent, familiarity with the team - in particular the fact that he will be working with the same engineer he had last year - and strong recent record at Surfers Paradise, we feel bringing him on board will give PKV Racing the best opportunity to have a successful weekend."

Servia currently sits sixth in the championship with 204 points, just five points out of fifth place, and Johnson is delighted to be able to help a driver who gave so much to the team as Katherine Legge's team-mate in 2006.

"We are pleased because this provides Oriol, one of the top drivers in the Champ Carseries, an opportunity to continue to battle for a top-three spot in the championship standings,” Johnson said.

Servia admits that the 2.795-mile Surfers Paradise circuit is his 'favourite track in the Champ Car series' and the Catalan has been particularly impressive in Australia in the last two years, claiming pole in 2005 and leading the race last year.
“I am very excited to have the opportunity to continue my fight for a place among the leaders in the standings,” he said, “I want to thank Mr Kalkhoven, Jimmy Vasser and Mark Johnson for giving me this opportunity.

"The good thing is that I know a lot of the PKV Racing crew members and will be working with my engineer from last year, Yves Touron, so we are already very familiar with each other. I have been fighting for wins on the street circuits all year and I am sure it won't be any different in Surfers. Hopefully, I can get the win there for the team and myself.”

Servia will partner PKV regular Neel Jani in Australia as the Champ Carseries resumes after a seven-week break following the European double-header at Zolder and Assen.
