Former Open-wheel Champ Hurt in Crash
Apr 14, 4:30 PM (ET) LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) -Former Champ Car champion Paul Tracy was taken to a hospital for further examination Saturday after complaining of back pain following a crash during practice for the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. The 38-year-old Tracy lost control and his car slid nose-first into one of the concrete barriers lining the downtown street course. Eric Mauk, a spokesman for Champ Car, said Tracy was complaining of back spasms and soreness in his back before he was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital. Mauk said Tracy underwent X-rays that turned out negative and was awaiting an MRI. Meanwhile, his Forsythe Championship Racing team said Oriol Servia would replace Tracy in Saturday's qualifying session. Servia, a regular in Champ Car the past few seasons, has been without a ride in 2007. Champ Car officials said Servia's Saturday qualifying time would count if he drives Sunday, but that Tracy would have to use his Friday qualifying time if he returns to the cockpit for the race. That means Tracy would likely start last in the 17-car field, since times usually go down for everyone in the final qualifying session. |

Forsythe Championship Racing driver Paul Tracy suffered compression fracture to his first lumbar vertebrae during an accident in the Saturday morning practice session at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach which will prevent him from getting back in his #3 INDECK Cosworth/Bridgestone/DP01 this weekend. Oriol Servia will take over the driving duties for the # 3 Champ Car, and will participate in the second qualifying session and race at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. Further information regarding Paul Tracy’s condition will follow.

MILLER: On Servia's Strength and Open-Wheel's Weakness Written by: Robin Miller Long Beach, Calif. – 4/17/2007 ![]() Last Friday night, Ryan Hunter-Reay was running a late model stock car at Irwindale Speedway in Los Angeles. Andrew Ranger was home in Quebec watching a hockey game. And, after spending another day walking around the Champ Car paddock in Long Beach, Oriol Servia was trying to remain positive. "Of course it's frustrating not to have a ride but all weekend in Las Vegas and again here Friday, fans kept coming up to me and giving me their support," said Servia. "That helped keep my energy and motivation up. "We were all hoping something good would happen sooner or later." What happened during those next 48 hours illustrates Servia's strength and one of open wheel racing's weaknesses. Replacing the injured Paul Tracy just before qualifying, the 33-year-old veteran parlayed his talent, a good pit strategy and a well-timed caution to score one of the most surprising and popular's podiums in recent memory. "I didn't expect to be in a car and I certainly didn't expect to be up here," said Servia after finishing second in his first start with Forsythe Racing at the 33rd annual Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. "I mean I knew I had one of the best cars with one of the best teams but I only had a half hour in the car and I was starting in the back. So, yes, I am thrilled to be sitting here." Neil Mickelwright, vice president of operations for Forsythe Racing whose call to pit Servia out of sequence started this great odyssey, wasn't expecting miracles but he also wasn't shocked with the Spainard's latest pinch-hit home run. "I lobbied to get Oriol in our other car all winter, I just didn't want it to be under these circumstances," said Mickelwright, who was told by owner Gerald Forsythe they would only be fielding one car until a couple weeks before the season opener. "I think he's a quality driver and he showed it today. And I think everyone agrees he belongs in this series full-time." And therein lies one of Champ Car's major flaws. Proven performers like Hunter-Reay, Ranger and Servia have been replaced by rookies with money. It's not that Robert Doornbos, Neel Jani or Tristan Gommendy lack ability, it's just that Champ Car's revolving door lineup makes it impossible for the series to retain any identity with the fans or media. Servia brings a helmet to the track, not a checkbook, and despite his track record, loyalty and equity, it took an injury to get him a ride. He's not a household name with the American public but he is well respected by his competitors. "It pisses me off that Oriol doesn't have a ride because he deserves one," said Sebastien Bourdais following his third straight LBGP victory. "I don't think it's right. I think if we're a professional series, we should have professional drivers. When you hear people asking drivers for $3 million to get a ride, it's not right but obviously it looks like we're going to have to go through it that before it gets better." To his credit, Servia handles the reality of open wheel racing in this country quite professionally. Sure he's unhappy that someone of his stature and service would always have a job in baseball, basketball or football yet he doesn't go around moping and crying. "Obviously, I didn't want to get a ride like this," he said, referring to Tracy's fractured vertebrae which could sideline him for a couple months. "This series needs Paul and I hope he heals real soon. "But Mr. Forsythe needed someone and I'm glad they asked me." In a logical world, Servia's super sub performance would earn him a steady drive for the remainder of 2007. Tracy is likely to be back by Portland in mid-June and Mario Dominguez, who crashed out at Long Beach, only has a deal through this week's Houston race. While congratulating his new driver Sunday afternoon, Forsythe beamed: "There are not many guys who could have jumped into a strange car and did what Oriol did today." Yet the co-owner of Champ Car wouldn't endorse him for the rest of the season. "I'm not making any decisions yet," he said. What if Servia wins Houston? "Then he's definitely got the ride," replied Forsythe. After what we witnessed last weekend, a win certainly isn't out of the question. With two days to practice and qualifying instead of 30 minutes, Servia could really be a handful.
