Following last week's dramatic reshuffle of personnel, Spain's Pedro de la Rosa finds himself back in the cockpit of a race car for his home grand prix in Barcelona this weekend.

Having joined Jaguar as test driver this season, de la Rosa hoped to resume his racing career in 2002 but, following the negotiations that took Luciano Burti to Prost, now gets his chance to star alongside Eddie Irvine at the Circuit de Catalunya and beyond.

Q:
How big will expectations be during your home race, albeit your debut race for Jaguar Racing?

Pedro de la Rosa:
I just hope that people don't expect anything from me. I know this is unrealistic to expect, but I have nothing in mind than to give 100 per cent. I want to finish the weekend knowing that I did the best possible job for both Jaguar Racing and myself. This team is currently in transition, and it will take time before we are challenging the frontrunners. Our aim this season is to be competitive and use this as a baseline for developing next year's car. Expectations will always be high in circumstances like this, but my debut for Jaguar Racing must be taken in the context of the team's capabilities at this stage of our development.

Q:
This time last week you were a test driver and now you're a full-time race driver again. Do you now adopt a different approach?

PdlR:
You must step up another gear, but I still think one part of you remains as a test driver because of the development responsibility. You never stop developing the car. On the other hand, you now have to race 21 cars every two weeks, and that requires extra aggression and focus. You must consistently prove your competitiveness and that means pushing very hard at race level. I haven't raced competitively since last year, and I can't wait to line up on that grid this weekend. It certainly beats testing at a wet and windy Silverstone!

Q:
Eddie Irvine is a different character to you. How well do you think you'll work with him?

PdlR:
One thing is for sure - Eddie is certainly a different character! I've spent a few days testing with him and he's very different from your average F1 driver. I've never had a problem with my team-mate and Eddie's no different. We must work well together and not against each other. We share the mutual goal of taking this team forward and I haven't seen anything from Eddie that worries me in this respect. He applies himself well and is an experienced and capable driver. Before I try beating anybody this weekend, I must compete with Eddie. As somebody with the same equipment as me, he is the benchmark that I must use before anybody else on that race track.

Q:
Apart from the same colour uniforms, your race team this weekend shares nothing in common with the test team that you have spent the last few months working with. Doesn't it feel like joining a completely new team?

PdlR:
I met my mechanics for the first time last Friday and, you know what, this is the first time in my career that I have arrived at a race meeting and not known the team around me! It makes things a little harder, of course, but this whole team is like a new and complex machine. There are lots of new components and it will take time before every component is working in complete harmony and efficiency. That's the challenge we face. The building blocks for the future are being laid down now and I'm confident in exploiting the potential we have.

De la Rosa regresa en Montmeló y aunque aunque da la sensación de que el circuito catalán es el escenario ideal para su vuelta a la alta competición, después de perderse los cuatro primeros Grandes Premios de la temporada -en los que ha estado trabajando como piloto probador de Jaguar-, podría no ser así.

El español sabe que la presión será mayor al regresar en casa y no quiere que los aficionados le pidan demasiado de momento. De hecho el monoplaza verde, con los pilotos Eddie Irvine y Luciano Burti -quien este domingo se enfrentará a su primera carrera como piloto de Prost-, no ha conseguido puntuar en lo que va de año.

"Sólo espero que la gente no espere mucho de mí. Sé que eso no es muy realista, pero lo único que tengo en mente es entregarme al cien por cien", explicó hoy el piloto catalán en declaraciones al sitio web 'Formula1.com'. "Mi objetivo este fin de semana es terminar, haciéndolo lo mejor posible tanto para Jaguar como para mí mismo", destacó.

De la Rosa recuerda que Jaguar es un equipo que "en este momento está viviendo una transición" y llevará tiempo "antes de que pueda estar desafiando a los de cabeza". En este sentido, el objetivo de Jaguar esta temporada "es ser competitivos y usar ese trabajo como base para el desarrollo del coche del próximo año". "La expectativas siempre son altas en circunstancias como éstas, pero mi debut con Jaguar Racing debe tomarse en el contexto de la capacidad del equipo en este momento de desarrollo", subrayó.



Irvine tiene un caracter diferente

El ex pupilo de Tom Walkinshaw, que reconoce que está deseando poder rodar con el resto de participantes del Mundial este fin de semana, indica que su compañero de equipo, Eddie Irvine, "tiene un carácter diferente", aunque espera no tener ningún problema con él.

Este fin de semana vivirá un Gran Premio muy diferente a los que ha tenido hasta ahora en su carrera como piloto de Fórmula 1 y entre las circunstancias diferentes cabe destacar que apenas conoce a los integrantes del equipo de carreras de Jaguar.

"Conocí a mis mecánicos por primera vez el pasado viernes y es la primera vez que llego a una carrera y no conozco al equipo que me rodea. Eso hará algunas cosas más duras, por supuesto, pero este equipo es como una nueva y compleja máquina. Hay muchos nuevos componentes y llevará tiempo antes de que cada componente trabaje en completa armonía y eficacia. Ese es el reto que tenemos ante nosotros. Estoy seguro de que aprovecharemos el potencial que tenemos en el futuro", vaticinó el pupilo de Niki Lauda.
