Porsche will run its new Le Mans LMP1 programme from Weissach base

Porsche will revive its in-house factory team for its return to the prototype ranks in 2014.

The German manufacturer's forthcoming LMP1 hybrid will be run by a full works team based at its Weissach research and development headquarters.

This facility near Stuttgart is where Porsche's first outright contender for Le Mans 24 Hours honours since 1998 is being designed, developed and built.

Porsche R&D boss Wolfgang Hatz made the announcement at Porsche's Night of Champions awards ceremony on Saturday evening.

"The car will be run by our own works team based here at Weissach," he said. "The first rollout of our new LMP1 car is planned for mid-2013."

Porsche has upgraded its motorsport facility since its last major programme with the RS Spyder LMP2, which was run by the works Penske team in the US and by customer teams in Europe.

It is understood that approximately 200 people are working on the P1 project.

The only other news on the project was the confirmation of a restructuring of Porsche Motorsport, with former BMW man Fritz Enzinger taking control of the P1 project and head of motorsport Hartmut Kristen retaining control of the manufacturer's 911-based programmes.

The majority of Porsche's 16 Le Mans wins have come with teams run direct from the factory. That number includes its final victory with the 911 GT1-98 more than 14 years ago.

Porsche will run a factory team for the first time since 1998 in next year's FIA World Endurance Championship as it develops its new 991-shape 911 RSR GTE contender. The car will be run in conjunction with Manthey Racing under the Porsche AG Team Manthey banner.

Nop.

Audi ya ha hecho oficial el 'roster' de pilotos para resistencia. Andre Lotterer, Benoit Treluyer, Marcel Fassler, Tom Kristensen, Allan McNish, Loic Duval, Oliver Jarvis, Marc Gené y Lucas Di Grassi.

Salen Bernhard y Dumas. Bueno no salen. En los años pasados eran cedidos por Porsche. Cómo ya este año van a ir probando cosas no va a colar lo de soltarlos.

Daytona Prototypes and LMP2 to equalise for new US series

Daytona Prototypes and LMP2 machinery will go head to head for overall honours in the new-for-2014 unified US sportscar series, as revealed by AUTOSPORT.

Grand-Am and the American Le Mans Series, which will merge at the end of this season, have confirmed that DPs, LMP2s and production versions of the lightweight Nissan DeltaWing experimental racer will make up the top class of the unified championship in 2014 and '15.

The announcement, made on the first day of the official test ahead of the Daytona 24 Hours Grand-Am opener on January 26/27, also firmed up the remainder of the class structure for the first two years of the new series.

The ALMS one-make LMPC prototype class for the ORECA-Chevrolet FLM09 will continue as a separate category, while the ALMS GT (nee GTE) division will be distinct from the Grand-Am GT class.

The Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars that form the GTC class in the ALMS will be amalgamated into the Grand-Am category. Grand-Am's new GX category for so-called experimental cars could be absorbed into this group or run as a separate, fifth class.

Grand-Am managing director of competition Richard Buck explained that the two bodies had taken an inclusive approach to allow as many competitors from each series to move forward into the unified championship.

"This is a best-of-both-worlds approach that reflects the fact we have a true merger evolving on a daily basis," he said. "This announcement is only a first step in solidifying our class structure.

"Our organisations' respective competition departments are working diligently on balance of performance for the top prototype class, plus overall class specifications across the board."

It is unclear how DPs and LMP2 cars, which are significantly faster on most circuits, will be balanced.

Grand-Am boss Ed Bennett told AUTOSPORT in December that the DPs would be made faster in 2014.

"The performance of the DPs has to go up," he said. "We have to look at the aero - we could give them more downforce - and we think the power will increase, and we are taking a hard look at the tyres that both types of car [DP and LMP2] run on."

There will be no place for LMP1 cars in the unified series, which was made clear in the announcement of the merger in September.

--------------------------------

Pescarolo could continue after team goes into liquidation

Sportscar legend Henri Pescarolo has not ruled out continuing as a team owner after his company went into liquidation on Tuesday.

The company, known as Pescarolo Team in its final incarnation, was liquidated by a French court after a six-month period during which it was protected under law from its creditors in a procedure akin to Chapter 11 in the US.

A survival plan for the squad, which withdrew from the World Endurance Championship after a disastrous Le Mans 24 Hours, had to be presented to a commercial court in Le Mans at the end of that period.

Pescarolo, whose team was the most successful privateer at Le Mans for much of the 2000s as Pescarolo Sport, said: "It is not the right time to find new sponsors or investors. I had no real solution to present to the court.

"This means that Pescarolo Team doesn't exist any more as a company, but if I want to, I can continue. I still own the workshops and all the mechanics [who were paid by the government during the protection period] are available."

Pescarolo explained that his team could work with another entrant at this year's Le Mans 24 Hours.

"I am talking to people involved in two projects for Le Mans who are looking for someone to run their car," he said. "It would not be under my name, but I would be involved and they would use my mechanics and workshop."

Pescarolo is open to restarting a team using his own name for 2014, but he said that it would depend on the economic situation and whether he believes the new LMP1 rulebook offered privateers a chance to compete with the factories.

The 70-year-old added that he would spend some time contemplating his future over the coming weeks.

"It all happened yesterday, so I haven't made any decisions," he said. "I have to decide if I want to continue in racing or go fishing instead."

Pescarolo estimated the company's debt at "less than 200,000". He blamed the breakdown of his deal with the Luxury Racing Ferrari team to become a partner in his new LMP1 project for Pescarolo's financial problems.

JRM drops WEC campaign to focus on Le Mans 24 Hours

The British JRM Racing squad has opted against continuing in the World Endurance Championship this season and will instead focus on its LMP1 campaign on a one-car assault on the Le Mans 24 Hours.

JRM, which moved into P1 with an HPD ARX-03a last season, announced on Thursday that it did not file an WEC entry but did put one in for Le Mans ahead of Wednesday's closing date for entries.

Team owner James Rumsey said: "Le Mans 24 Hours is the highlight of the endurance calendar and brings greater opportunities for brand visibility than any other event.

"In our first-ever Le Mans we finished in sixth overall, with very little running beforehand, and we are extremely excited about what we can do in our second year.

"We remain open to competing in events of the WEC or other sportscar series, and we have a number of options we are pursuing.

"But for the moment our goal is to work on securing the long-term partnerships required to enable us to compete and succeed in the world's most famous motor race."

News of JRM's decision to run its HPD only at Le Mans further reduces the number of P1 prototypes likely to race full-time in the eight-round WEC.

Rebellion Racing, the top privateer in the series in 2012, looks certain to run one car rather than last year's two in all the events.

OAK Racing is understood not to have made a full-season WEC entry with its eponymous HPD-engined chassis.

Strakka Racing will continue with its HPD.

JRM, which ran David Brabham, Peter Dumbreck and Karun Chandhok in its P1 entry, will continue developing and building Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3 racers.

-----------------------------

Mal asunto que los privados vayan dejando el WEC. Primero Rebellion se va a las ALMS y ahora JRM sólo va a Le Mans. La pasta, la jodida pasta.

Mas noticias poco positivas.

Toyota sticks to one car for 2013 World Endurance Championship

Toyota will run just one car in the full World Endurance Championship in 2013.

Toyota Motorsport GmbH in Cologne had been working on fielding two cars in the full series, but the German organisation has confirmed rumours that it posted only one full-season entry ahead of the deadline on Wednesday.

The Japanese manufacturer will, however, enter two 2013 versions of its TS030 Hybrid at the Le Mans 24 Hours and the Spa round of the WEC in May as a warm-up.

A TMG spokesman said: "It is purely a matter of resources. What we shouldn't forget is that last year was intended as a test and development year and this year was meant to be our first full season, which probably would have meant one car in the WEC."

The WEC entry will be for the #7 car to be raced by Alex Wurz and Nicolas Lapierre, who will be joined at Le Mans by Kazuki Nakajima.

The spokesman stressed that Toyota was not downgrading its aspirations for 2013 following its successful return to international sportscar racing last season.

"The target will be to win Le Mans and the world championship," he said. "We are still serious about winning."

Toyota will contest the 2013 WEC with a revised version of the TS030 Hybrid that won three races last season.

The updated car will be built around a new monocoque that eradicates the compromises in the 2012 tub, which was designed to allow the car to retrieve energy via either the front or rear axle.

Nick Heidfeld gets full-time Rebellion LMP1 seat for 2013

Former Formula 1 driver Nick Heidfeld is returning to the Rebellion Racing LMP1 squad in 2013.

Heidfeld has been announced as one of the Anglo-Swiss team's six drivers for the 2013 season, which includes full-season assaults on the World Endurance Championship and the American Le Mans Series with its fleet of Lola-Toyota B12/60s.

The line-ups for the two campaigns have not been announced, but it is known that the 35-year-old German, who contested three events with Rebellion in 2012, will take part in a full programme of races.

Rebellion has also announced that Chinese driver Congfu 'Frankie' Cheng is returning to the team after a one-off at last year's Shanghai WEC finale and that Nicolas Prost has been retained for a fifth season.

Heidfeld, Cheng and Prost join the already-confirmed Neel Jani, Andrea Belicchi and team newcomer Mathias Beche, last year's European Le Mans Series champion.

Rebellion has also revealed that, in addition to its one-car assaults on the ALMS and the WEC, it will field second cars in the Sebring 12 Hours in the US in March and, subject to gaining entries, the first three world championship rounds up to and including the Le Mans 24 Hours in June.

Rebellion team manager Bart Hayden said: "We are fortunate to benefit from a talented and experienced pool of drivers again this year; I'm convinced that they will all do a great job and work well together."
