CHAMP CAR: Montagny Leads First Day of Sebring Tests

The 2008 Champ Car World Series season “unofficially” got under way today in Sebring when Champ Car teams and drivers took to the track at Sebring International Raceway for the first of three pre-season open tests. The first day saw Frenchman Franck Montagny top the time charts aboard the #7 Forsythe Pettit Racing entry with a time of 50.788 seconds (118.304 mph).

The former Formula 1 driver for Super Aguri, who was taking part in his first Champ Car open test, beat out PKV Racing driver Oriol Servia for the top honors of the day by a mere 0.068sec. Servia was not only the first driver out on track this morning but the pilot that accumulated the most laps throughout the day with 117.

Close behind Servia was Newman/Haas/Lanigan’s new recruit Justin Wilson, who posted a lap of 50.927 seconds (117.981 mph).

“It was a pretty good day,” stated Wilson. “I was just learning to work with the team and learning the car. I think everything is going as planned, we will see how tomorrow goes but I’m pleased with what happened today.”

Another satisfied driver was 2007 Atlantic Rookie of the Year Franck Perera. Behind the wheel of the #24 Conquest Racing DP01, the Frenchman registered the fourth best time with a lap of 50.986 seconds (117.844 mph) in only his second Champ Car test.

“It was an interesting day, a little hard physically though because since my last race in Atlantic, which was in August, I only did one test back in November but I should be good by the end of the test,” expressed Perera, who is seen by many as the top driver coming out of Atlantics in 2007. “I’m a bit surprised, to be honest, to be at the top. It’s a new track for me, new people to work with and a new car. But everybody did a really good job to get everything prepared. The team is showing its potential and that it can fight for the top. However, today is only the first day and there is still a lot of testing time left, but it feels good to be with the top guys.”

While Montagny may have been the driver at the top of the time sheet at the end of the day it was Pacific Coast Motorsports’ Alex Figge that had the fastest time of the morning session. His lap of 51.097 seconds (117.588 mph) placed him fifth overall at the end of the day. He was followed by Graham Rahal of Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing.

“We didn’t run new tires at the end, so when you look at it like that I think we were second or third before everybody put tires on,” explained Rahal. “The track is obviously pretty good and overall our cars are performing well right now and I’m happy because I’m never normally near the top in Sebring so it’s good for me!”

Canada’s Alex Tagliani, who ended the day in seventh, was delighted to be working with PKV Racing and with his on-track performance. “I’m ecstatic right now. I hadn’t been in a car since November and in the morning session we were already third," he exclaimed. "Everything is going so well. This team is so professional, we’re working on different setups for the car and they are very happy with the feedback I’m giving them. It’s so much easier to work with a team when the chemistry is there right from the start and you don’t have to build that up first. I think this team will definitely be contending for the championship.”

Rounding out the top 10 were Bruno Junqueira, driving for Dale Coyne Racing, his fellow Brazilian also in a Dale Coyne car, Mario Moraes and Forsythe Pettit Racing’s Paul Tracy.

We spoke to Montagny who said, "It looks pretty good that I will be racing here this year. I am tired of being a test driver. I want my name on the side of the car, I want to race and I want to win. I don't care if I never go back to F1. I am very impressed with this team. asi se habla !!!!!!!!! ya me gustaria que eso mismo dijera pedro [/B]

Sebring. Vueltas rápidas
1. Franck Perera (Conquest Racing) 49.806
2. Graham Rahal (Newman-Haas-Lanigan Racing) 49.950
3. Alex Tagliani (PKV Racing) 50.173
4. Oriol Servià (PKV Racing) 50.178
5. Justin Wilson (Newman-Haas-Lanigan Racing) 50.207
6. Franck Montagny (Forsythe-Pettit Racing) 50.209
7. Bruno Junqueira (Dale Coyne Racing) 50.507
8. Alex Figge (Pacific Coast Motorsports) 50.521
9. Simon Pagenaud (Conquest Racing) 50.702
10. Enrique Bernoldi (Rocketsports Racing) 50.714

Is Open-Wheel Peace Finally at Hand?

Written by: Robin Miller

Indianapolis, Ind.

All together now? The Indy 500 could benefit from an influx of teams and drivers, but the benefits of a unified series would extend far beyond the 500. (LAT photo)n » More Photos

The long, costly war between Champ Car and the Indy Racing League is close to being over and, for the first time since 1995, there could be one open wheel series for 2008. But there’s still one major hurdle to overcome to make this long-awaited union a reality.

SPEED has learned that Kevin Kalkhoven and Gerald Forsythe, the co-owners of Champ Car, have reached an agreement with IRL founder Tony George to race together this season.

As reported by SPEEDtv.com recently, George offered the Champ Car ownership free Dallara chassis and Honda engines to any CC team that signs up for the full season in addition to receiving $1.2 million per car as part of the IRL’s new TEAM program. Additionally, the Champ Car races at Long Beach, Edmonton and Surfer’s Paradise, Australia would be added to the ’08 IndyCar Series schedule.

However, it’s not quite that easy.

The IRL race at Motegi, Japan is scheduled to run April 18-20 which is the same weekend as the Long Beach Grand Prix. Jim Michaelian, the longtime LBGP president and general manager, says the most successful street race in North America is locked into its date and cannot be moved due to prior contract commitment with the Long Beach Convention Center (which anchors the track).

Motegi, owned by Honda of Japan, also faces some challenges in re-scheduling so Honda’s Robert Clarke, Champ Car’s Dick Eidswick, Kalkhoven and George are desperately trying to find a solution.

“It’s as close as it’s ever been to being together, but we don’t know if we can get across the goal line,” said George on Thursday evening. “But no one is giving up yet.”

Added Kalkhoven: “Both sides want this to happen very much and we’re working on it.”

Supposedly, the Motegi people were agreeable to moving back one week, which is currently the date for the IRL race at Kansas City. The ISC-owned facility reportedly declined the request because it’s already a sellout for the NASCAR/IRL package.

Clarke, the former leader of Honda Performance Development who tried to put the two sides together in 2006 along with Mario Andretti, might have to travel with George to Japan this weekend to try and find a solution while Eidswick works on Champ Car’s options.

Drivers, mechanics and owners in Champ Car learned of this amalgamation after returning from a test last week at Sebring, Fla. As expected, most were happy to hear about unification even though it means their current Panoz chassis would be rendered show cars.

“It’s not a bad deal but you’ll still need some money,” said Derrick Walker, whose Indy-based team started in 1990. “You have to have two car configurations (oval and road course), the crash damage is higher with ovals and it’s a big fat schedule. It’s going to be a rough old ride for our Champ Car teams because we don’t have the familiarity with the Dallaras but the bottom line is that it’s a great gesture to put this thing together.”

Jimmy Vasser, who is part owner of PKV Racing, echoed Walker’s sentiments.

“There’s been a lot of silence lately so, if this is true, this is what needs to happen,” said the 1996 CART champion. “It’s a very good day for motor racing.”

Paul Newman was ecstatic upon hearing of the proposal. “I feel like I died and wrent to heaven,” said the co-owner of Champ Car’s winningest team along with Carl Haas and Mike Lanigan. “This is the best news I’ve heard in a long time.”

Some smaller Champ Car owners like Eric Bachelart were shocked to hear of such a plan at this late date.

“Are you kidding me?” said Bachelart, whose Indy-based Conquest Racing just signed rookie Franck Perera. “I just spent a million dollars on a new car and spare parts and this news hurts because I know the value of money. I’m all for one series but I wish it would be 2009.”

It’s believed there are over 50 Dallara chassis, new and used, available to be dispersed among the CCWS teams.

Since winning CART’s assets in bankruptcy court in 2004, Kalkhoven and Forsythe have spent millions on television, promoting races, propping up teams and payroll. They also own Cosworth and Pi, plus the rejuvenated Atlantic series. It’s not certain what would happen with the Atlantic series as the IRL has its own feeder system with the Indy Pro Series. But there were 24 cars at Wednesday’s Atlantic test in Sebring and it would make a strong support race for any series.

George has also spent millions on his league and this union would assure Indy-car racing of stronger fields, deeper competition and hopefully a much larger entry list at the Indianapolis 500.

It also means young stars Graham Rahal and Marco Andretti can now race on the same track along with Justin Wilson and Dan Wheldon while veterans Helio Castroneves, Tony Kanaan and Paul Tracy would be reunited.

“I think we’d all be happy if we’re back together and the fans would be happy to see all the best drivers in one race,” said Tracy, the 2003 CART champion who hasn’t competed at Indy since his controversial second place finish in 2002.

“We’ll be at a disadvantage to the IRL teams the first year but such is life. Getting everybody back under one roof is what needs to happen.”

February 8, 2008

Statement from Kevin Kalkhoven & Jerry Forsythe, Champ Car co-owners:

Unfortunately, leaks and media reports about a possible unification of
Champ Car and the Indy Racing League (IRL) have significantly hampered
discussions. Over the past three years, we have fielded and offered
several proposals regarding unification of the two premier U.S.-based
open-wheel racing series, but we have been unable to reach an acceptable
solution. Discussions currently are at a standstill, and we therefore
are proceeding with plans to continue as Champ Car.

Parece un echo posible anuncio mañana

REPORT: Champ Car/IndyCar Deal Done

Written by: Robin Miller 02/19/2008 - 01:32 AM
Indianapolis, Ind.

Most Champ Car teams were told to quit working on their Panoz chassis Monday and expect delivery of their new cars in a few days. Paul Tracy is coming to Indianapolis later this week for a seat fitting. And one of Champ Car’s co-owners admitted to a fellow owner there would only be one series in 2008.

After 12 years of warring that cost open-wheel racing much of its sponsorship, audience and momentum, common sense has finally prevailed.

SPEEDtv.com has learned that the Indy Racing League and Champ Car have officially, and mercifully, agreed to become one entity. A press conference could come as early as Wednesday if Kevin Kalkhoven is back from England in time.

Following nearly two weeks of negotiations between Tony George, Gerry Forsythe and Kalkhoven, an agreement is in place to bring several Champ Car teams and a handful of races into the IRL domain. It’s believed attorneys from both sides worked all weekend to finalize some kind of arrangement for the two men who claimed CART’s assets in bankruptcy court in 2004.

George, who started the IRL in 1996 when CART was in its heyday, would not confirm any deal when contacted late Monday night. “While it is true that I continue to believe we at the threshold of something long-overdue, we have not yet stepped across it,” he said.

But all signs point to this tumultuous chapter of American motorsports finally being closed.

“I’m supposed to fly in Indy later this week to get fitted for a seat and then we’re going to have to thrash to make it to the first test in Homestead,” said Tracy, the winningest active driver in Champ Car and its premier personality. “We don’t have any experience with those Dallaras and we’re going to need all the practice we can get but this is definitely the best thing that can happen for open-wheel racing.”

The IRL’s first open test is on the oval at Homestead, Fla. on Feb. 27-28.

Mike Lanigan, who co-owns a two-car CC effort with Paul Newman and Carl Haas in addition to promoting races at Houston and Cleveland, said he spoke with Forsythe on Sunday evening.

“Gerry indicated we were likely looking at one series,” said Lanigan, a Chicago native who started out sponsoring cars at the Indianapolis 500 in the early ‘90s. “I’m hoping to talk to Tony (George) about considering our two races, but having a unified series is certainly what everybody wants to see.”

Derrick Walker, a regular in Champ Car since 1991, said he expected “we should all hear something positive Tuesday or Wednesday” while Conquest Racing owner Eric Bachelart was asked whether he’d be in Champ Car, the IRL or one series this year.

“I think I will be in a unified series,” he replied.

George’s offer of free cars and engines, plus $1.2 million for any team able to compete the entire season, is expected to add a minimum of eight cars to the IRL grid in 2008.

Newman/Haas/Lanigan (two), PKV (two), Forsythe (two), Walker (one) and Conquest (one) are definites, while Dale Coyne is likely to field at least one car in ‘08, although he couldn’t be reached for comment on Monday. Minardi Team USA principal Paul Stoddart is a question mark, although partner Keith Wiggins may try to strike out on his own with one car. RocketSports is unknown while Pacific Coast Motorsports is believed to be headed to the ALMS.

With the IRL car count at 16, this would give open-wheel its largest fields since earlier this decade.

It also appears the Long Beach/Motegi conflict has been worked out. Earlier this month, George and Kalkhoven admitted there could not be unification unless Long Beach could be added to the IRL schedule and remain on its original date—April 20, the same weekend as Motegi. George and Honda’s Robert Clarke flew to Japan to meet with Honda of Japan (Motegi’s owners) and returned using “optimistic” quotes.

The fast, challenging airport circuit at Edmonton, which drew a legitimate 175,000-200,000 people during its first three years, will likely find a place on the IRL schedule as well. And Surfer’s Paradise, Australia was also being heavily considered.

It would bring the combined schedule to 19 races for 2008 and George is likely to consider other Champ Car circuits like Toronto or Mexico City for 2009.

IRL/Champ Car deal reportedly done

By Steven English Tuesday, February 19th 2008, 11:10 GMT

The deal to unify Champ Car and the Indy Racing League has finally been completed, according to reports in America.

Respected American journalist Robin Miller last night reported on SpeedTV that the two weeks of negotiations have ended successfully.

He claimed Champ Car teams have been told to stop work on their cars and to expect delivery of new IRL cars later this week. Autosport.com understands that the announcement of the merger will be made by IRL officials tomorrow.

IRL boss Tony George's offer of free cars and engines, plus $1.2 million for any Champ Car team that will contest the full IRL season is believed to have been taken up by at least five teams.

Although nobody would confirm a deal had been reached, several team bosses are expecting the announcement imminently. When asked where his team would be running this year, Conquest Racing boss Eric Bachelart said: "I think I will be in a unified series."

After speaking to Champ Car co-owner Gerry Forsythe, Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing's Mike Lanigan said: "He indicated we were likely looking at one series."

Walker Racing boss Derrick Walker added: "We should all hear something positive on Tuesday or Wednesday."

Newman/Haas/Lanigan, PKV, and Forsythe are expected to enter the IRL with two cars each, while Walker, Conquest, and Dale Coyne Racing are likely to field one each. The futures of Minardi Team USA and Rocketsports are unknown, and Pacific Coast Motorsports are believed to be heading for the American Le Mans Series.

Champ Car veteran Paul Tracy will fly to Indianapolis for a seat fitting later this week, before heading to Homestead for the first IRL test of the season on February 27-28.

"We're going to have to thrash to make it to Homestead," he told SpeedTV. "We don't have any experience with those Dallaras so we're going to need all the practice we can get. But this s definitely the best thing that can happen for open-wheel racing."

It appears that an agreement has been reached on one sticking point in the deal: the date clash between the Champ Car round at Long Beach and the IRL race at Motegi on the April 19-20 weekend. The Motegi date is believed to have been rescheduled for later in the summer.

Champ Car's race at Edmonton, Canada, which draws the series' biggest crowd is likely to be confirmed in the IRL schedule, as well as a non-championship race at Surfer's Paradise, Australia. That brings the schedule to 19 races this year, with more road course events likely to be considered for 2009.

But Indy boss Tony George still refused to confirm a deal on Monday evening, telling SpeedTV: "While it is true that I continue to believe we're at the threshold of something long-overdue, we have not yet stepped across it."
