Heikki Kovalainen finally had something to smile about this week after topping the times on the final day of pre-Malaysian Grand Prix testing in Sepang on Friday.
The Finn, who had a disappointing F1 debut in Australia and was bottom of the timesheets on Thursday, set a confidence-boosting time that was four hundredths of a second faster that Ferrari's Felipe Massa. With drivers clearly trying out new tyre runs ahead of next weekend's race, Anthony Davidson was a surprise third fastest as Super Aguri's SA07 proved that the form it showed in Australia was not a flash in the pan. Nico Rosberg was fourth fastest for Williams, with the team having stated this week that they wanted to work on their pace over a single lap following their disappointing qualifying performance in Australia. Toyota's Franck Montagny was fifth quickest, ahead of BMW Sauber's Nick Heidfeld and Honda Racing's Jenson Button, who only took part in the morning session. Lewis Hamilton completed his pre-Malaysian GP preparation in the morning to set the eighth quickest time, before handing over his McLaren to Pedro de la Rosa in the afternoon. Today's times: Pos Driver Team Time Laps 1. Kovalainen Renault ( 1:35.767 55 2. Massa Ferrari ( 1:35.808 72 3. Davidson Super Aguri-Honda ( 1:36.787 68 4. Rosberg Williams-Toyota ( 1:37.002 104 5. Date: Friday 30th March 2007
Drivers: Lewis Hamilton and Pedro de la Rosa Location: Sepang International Circuit, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Track Length: 5.543km Weather: Dry and sunny in the morning with heavy rain showers in the afternoon. Track temperature: 61.1° C Air temperature: 35.1° C Laps run today: 69 Laps run in total at test: 256: Lewis - 170 / Pedro - 86 Kilometres covered today: Lewis - 238km approx / Pedro - 144km approx Kilometres covered in total at test: Total - 1,419km approx: Lewis - 942km approx. / Pedro - 477km approx. Best lap time today: Lewis - 1m37.448 at 9:52 / Pedro - 1m39.100 at 17:00 Programme: The Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team took to the track on the final day of the extended test at the Sepang circuit with both Lewis and Pedro sharing the driving duties. Lewis continued his programme in the morning, with a concentration on longer runs. Unfortunately just as Lewis was finishing the car suffered an oil pipe failure, causing him to stop on track. The engine was not affected and the mechanics were able to solve the problem quickly. Pedro took over driving duties in the afternoon, but his running was limited due to a heavy rain downpour, meaning he was only able to go out on the dry Bridgestone Potenza tyres at the very end of the session. Lewis Hamilton Quote: "The test in Malaysia this week has been very productive, with us covering over 1,400km as we push forward with development of the MP4-22. A big focus for this week was evaluation of the Bridgestone Potenza compounds that we will have for the race next weekend. We have managed to get a good understanding of the various performances in the conditions at Sepang. We were also working on finding performance in the car to try and close the gap to Ferrari. It was my first experience of driving in Malaysia, and it was tougher than I expected! The heat in the cockpit is incredible, but I am making sure I keep hydrated when I am at the track and am continuing to train in the heat. These three days have been really useful as part of my acclimatisation process for the race. The circuit itself is great, it is very wide and flowing, and I am looking forward to racing on it." Next Test: Circuit de Catalunya, Barcelona - Three days (Monday 30th April - Wednesday 2nd May) Driver Constructor Time Laps Heikki Kovalainen Renault 1m35.757 55 Felipe Massa Ferrari 1m35.808 73 Anthony Davidson Super Aguri 1m36.787 68 Nico Rosberg WilliamsF1 1m37.002 106 Franck Montagny Toyota 1m37.206 79 Nick Heidfeld BMW Sauber 1m37.318 72 Jenson Button Honda Racing 1m37.326 37 Lewis Hamilton Vodafone McLaren Mercedes 1m37.448 43 Mark Webber Red Bull Racing 1m37.778 43 Tonio Liuzzi Toro Rosso 1m38.542 57 Pedro de la Rosa Vodafone McLaren Mercedes 1m39.100 26 Christian Klien Honda Racing 1m39.175 24 |
