Bobby has cast doubt over the Ulsterman's outspoken nature


Former Jaguar Racing CEO Bobby Rahal has questioned Eddie Irvine's position within the team and said that he is a demotivating force, even though he still denies trying to offload the Ulsterman.

Rahal was forced out of Jaguar last season by Niki Lauda and Irvine combined. The final straw came after Hungary, when it came to light that Rahal had tried to ditch Irvine in a deal with Jordan.

"It was only in jest," Rahal told UK weekly the Sunday Mirror. "I was chatting to Jordan and when he mentioned Irvine I said: 'I have to check on it'."

Rahal was instrumental in bringing Pedro de la Rosa onboard at Jaguar Racing, and he believes the Spaniard's performances relative to those Irvine gave justified his decision. He also said that Irvine has unsettled the team with his constant criticism, a claim backed up by several Jaguar Racing and Cosworth employees in Brazil.

"Irvine's public persona can demotivate a team and there was a period when it had that effect," Rahal said. "Pedro [de la Rosa], on the other hand, is the kind of guy the team needed. He's more than capable and has the right persona. He was certainly the faster of the two last year."

While Rahal never felt he was given the chance to show what he could do at the helm of Jaguar Racing, he suggested that Lauda's head may soon be on the block. The American said that the Austrian may have only until the end of this year to prove himself, while Lauda himself is already asking for the media not to judge him until next season.
