Rumours circulating at the French Grand Prix indicate that Benetton's current Managing Director, Flavio Briatore, is allegedly planning to resign from the team mid-season. The flamboyant Italian, who is dating supermodel Naomi Campbell in an on-off fashion, returned to Benetton last year after Renault announced that they were taking over the outfit.

This is the team's final season under the name of Benetton, and several key members of Renault staff have been moving into position over the course of the past year to help the transition go smoothly. However, the Anglo-Italian team is experiencing a difficult time, with poor results due to the disappointing performance of the new and revolutionary Renault 111° engine.

The French Grand Prix had also been hyped as the race where the team would turn the corner in terms of performance, and so far this does not look to be the case.

If Flavio is resigning there are two possibilities for his replacement - former team boss David Richards, and Renault Sport MD Christian Contzen - who were both in France this weekend . Richards, however, already has an involvement with world rally championship manufacturer Prodrive and is currently working towards expanding TV coverage of the WRC series, after buying the commercial rights to the series from Bernie Ecclestone. Hence rumours regarding his role are likely to be highly speculative.

Briatore has been managing all the commercial aspects of the team, and Contzen, a Belgian, was due to join the team in July to relieve Briatore of this aspect of his role. Hence it is possible that the arrival of Contzen, who has been with Renault for 40 years, could have resulted in the gossip.

It is thought that the team will call a staff meeting at their Enstone factory on Tuesday, when they will explain any changes to the team, and a public announcement could be expected then.

Flavio Briatore has a long association with Renault, hence this rumoured move is seen as surprising.
