Mosley warns against team orders

FIA President Max Mosley has reminded the eleven Formula One teams participating in the 2001 championship season that blatantly bringing team orders into play won't be tolerated. Let's cast our minds back to the McLaren episode in 1998 when David and Mika made a ‘gentleman's agreement' before the start of the race. The agreement was that whoever took the first corner would take the win due to the known dominance their cars would have, something Mika achieved.

The Finn was then delayed by his pit crew when they weren't ready for his stop, causing him to drive through pitlane and then come back in, something that lost him the lead to David. Then, on the last lap, David slowed considerably and gave the win back to Mika as per the agreement.

A huge debate erupted after this event as fans and team members watched the play in stunned silence and the FIA stated that they would not allow such a blatant display again. Teams have continued to bring team orders into play since then, however they have been a lot more discreet about it, until Sunday. Now, after watching Rubens Barrichello give way and hand his well deserved second place in the Austrian Grand Prix to teammate Michael Schumacher, Mosley has simply reminded teams that the FIA will take action and penalize teams if they deem it necessary.

"Any acts prejudicial to the interests of competition will be penalised under the International Sporting Code,” Mosley remarked. “This is a drivers' contest, not just a team championship.”
