Virgin complete first straightline test in Spain
Mon, 16 May, 2011

British youngster Adrian Quaife-Hobbs got his first taste of Formula One power in Spain yesterday, as he completed Virgin's first ever straightline test just south of Barcelona. The GP3 driver was at the Idiada Proving Ground to put more mileage on the team's Istanbul updates, as they look to extract more from the MVR-02 at this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix.

Quaife-Hobbs drives for Manor Racing in the GP3 series, the junior team of Virgin. The 20-year-old completed 146 km at the proving ground, with the MVR-02 running reliably throughout.

It has been an incredibly special day for me. Driving a Formula One car is what you always dream of from the moment you start karting, so it has been fantastic to finally experience that, said Adrian. I completed a lot of runs for the team and helped them to collect a lot of data. I can't thank Marussia Virgin Racing enough for this amazing opportunity, as it really allows me to gain experience and see how a Formula One team works. Experiences like this only make you hungry for more and it's exciting to get a taste of what the future could hold.

Virgin team principal John Booth said he was satisfied with the test, the first of its kind for the team. Overall it has been a very productive test for us, with the Idiada proving ground providing us with excellent conditions with which to test the updated package that we introduced at the last race, said Booth.

As we might have expected in its debut outing, we experienced a few teething problems in Istanbul and this test has provided us with the opportunity to understand more of the potential of the developments. We're looking forward to seeing further signs of progress in Spain next week.

Virgin have so far failed to match the pace of Team Lotus in the first four races, and are beginning to come under pressure from HRT behind. HRT are bringing a big upgrade to Barcelona this weekend, putting further pressure on the British team to up their game and stay ahead of the sport's smallest team.
