F1: Whiting R27 Report Key to Renault Verdict Written by: Adam Cooper, RACER Magazine Monte Carlo, Monaco – 12/6/2007 The R27's passing Whiting's muster as being McLaren-free was apparently the key element in Renault escaping punishment. (LAT photo) MORE PHOTOS A report into the possible use of McLaren intellectual property by the FIA’s Charlie Whiting was the key to Renault escaping without punishment by the WMSC. Whiting recently visited the team’s Enstone factory to see if any of the McLaren information specifically related to the case has been used in the 2007 car, since Phil Mackereth arrived in September 2006, when design was well underway. Whiting inspected the team’s design process for the R27 and it seems that he found that there was nothing amiss. Adam Cooper explores how Kimi Raikkonen and Ferrari pulled off their World Championship comeback in our January issue, on sale now. SpeedTV.com recently asked FIA President Max Mosley if the FIA was planning to inspect the 2007 Renault. “I can say this because it’s not in dispute,” he told us. “The person who brought information to Renault did so some time towards the end of the summer in 2006. There’s no allegation to my knowledge of any flow of information or documents since then. That could have been incorporated in the 2007 Renault, but that should be relatively easy to check. We’ve got various things we’re looking at, let’s say that.” However, on leaving the WMSC Monaco hearing Thursday evening, Mosley declined to elaborate on what had transpired until a detailed press release is issued on Friday: “We’re going to put out a full decision tomorrow, that will explain everything. But in the meantime we’re not saying anything. There was a hearing which was completely ordinary, everybody was listened to, everybody had an opportunity to explain themselves, and you know the decision.” |
