F1: Renault Guilty But Not Penalized in Spy Case
Written by: RACER staff Monte Carlo, Monaco – 12/6/2007 The WMSC gathered in Monaco ruled that Renault did not benefit from its possession of McLaren information. (LAT Photo) MORE PHOTOS Renault has been considered guilty of possessing confidential McLaren intellectual property at the FIA’s World Motor Sport Council meeting this Thursday in Monaco. As it happened with McLaren’s own initial verdict from the WMSC regarding “Stepneygate” and Ferrari, however, the officials chose not to penalize the French team, claimining no consistent evidence that the confidential information was actually used in Renault’s benefit exists. In the McLaren versus Ferrari case, a new hearing was eventually scheduled after new evidence appeared, and the silver team ended up being excluded from the 2007 constructor’s championship, and fined in $100m. The McLaren-Renault case revolves around a former McLaren engineer, Phil Mackareth, taking with him confidential McLaren files when he left the Woking squad to work for the French-owned operation.
