Tuesday, 25, July, 2006, 12:49 BMW’s controversial vertical wings, introduced at the French Grand Prix, have been banned by the FIA with immediate effect, ITV-F1.com can reveal. The wings, which raised eyebrows as much for the their aesthetic nature as their aerodynamic benefit, took the form of two tall fins mounted just forward of the driver’s cockpit. The technical delegate of the governing body, Charlie Whiting, has written to the teams informing them that as of now forward-mounted vertical aerodynamic devices, such as those used by BMW at Magny-Cours, are to be ruled out on safety grounds. Whiting is concerned that drivers' vision could be impaired given the wing's placement on the car. The FIA cited Article 2.3 of the 2006 Formula 1 technical regulations which states that the stewards of the meeting may exclude a vehicle whose construction is deemed to be dangerous. While the devices were cleared for use by scrutineers at the French Grand Prix, it is understood that the governing body has moved to prevent further teams developing similar devices. Several teams including Ferrari and Williams had expressed interest in developing projects of their own. “We have written to the teams to confirm that recent developments regarding aerodynamic devices forward of the cockpit opening have caused some concern,” an FIA spokesman told ITV-F1.com. “In our view a driver’s forward or lateral vision may be impaired by such devices and on that basis they will not be permitted.” http://www.itv-f1.com/News_Article.aspx?PO_ID=36756[URL-NOMBRE]http://www.itv-f1.com/News_Article.aspx?PO_ID=36756 Edited by - ` on 25/07/2006 14:07:10 |
