Raikkonen Crashes the McLaren MP4-18 in Testing
Friday June 6th, 2003 By Will Gray Finn Kimi Raikkonen crashed the new McLaren-Mercedes MP4-18 on Thursday during his second day of testing behind closed doors at Barcelona in Spain, the team stating the crash was due to driver error. Raikkonen, who currently leads the World Championship by four points from Michael Schumacher, crashed on the final corner of the track and was lightly injured in the incident. His public relations manager Kikka Kuosmanen told Atlas F1: "There was a kind of incident. He went off. He had a little knee injury, the skin was a bit bruised but nothing else. "I think it was the last corner and that is quite fast. The car was damaged but I don't know how much. I spoke to him today and he is alright, there are no serious problems." Raikkonen attended a sponsorship promotion in Finland today, and his Scottish teammate David Coulthard was due to take over but it is not known whether the team were able to get the car back on track. A McLaren spokesperson confirmed to Atlas F1 the details of the crash, stating the reason was down to a driver error. McLaren are scheduled to finish testing the MP4-18 today, where the team have been running since Wednesday "behind closed doors", with McLaren not releasing any lap times from this session. |
