After a year of racing for the Minardi Formula One team, Fernando sat the 2002 season out of active competition as he tested for the Renault squad in preparation for this year's championship. He is determined to become champion with the French squad in the next few years and Faure fully believes his driver has earned the right to be in the series with a top performing team.

“The impressive thing about this young man is that he hasn't had an easy life. He left home at only thirteen years of age for Italy,” Faure explained on the team's official website. “He has really earned his place in a Formula One car with a top team through his will-power, his strength and his energy. He clearly has only one aim at the moment. ‘I want to be world champion with Renault within the next three years,' he says time and again. He reminds me of a driver who had an unlimited determination, right from the start of his career, and who never deviated from it: Ayrton Senna.”




Throughout the Malaysian Grand Prix weekend Fernando was suffering with the flu, including the Saturday afternoon that saw him put his Renault on pole. Then the following day he competed in the race to finish in third place, still suffering with a very high fever in the oppressive Malaysian heat, something that has only reinforced Faure's way of thinking.

“I knew he was a bit ill, so I was a bit worried,” Faure added. “At Sepang, the heat is oppressive, and the humidity is awful. The lad was suffering but he is so determined, and has such will-power that I think that whatever the weather, whatever his state of health, he concentrates for the full 100 minutes of the race.”
