Speculation that former Benetton team manager Joan Villadelprat will join Prost next year has added strength to rumours that Marc Gene will also join up.

Villadelprat left Benetton earlier this year, ostensibly to set up a base into which the Minardi team could move had it been bought up by current sponsor Telefonica. With the rumour mill now suggesting that Gene, complete with Telefonica backing, may be transferring to Prost next season, the veteran manager's arrival only seems to confirm the stories. Alain Prost himself admitted that a new management structure would be announced at about the same time as his second driver was revealed, with the latter likely to be determined by sponsor requirements.

Interestingly, however, a spoke was put in Gene's wheel over the Suzuka weekend, with additional rumours suggesting that the Spanish connection at Prost next year could be supplied by none other than Pedro de la Rosa. The Arrows driver was thought to be the safer of two at the Leafield operation for 2001, with Jos Verstappen the one to leave, but the lack of an expected announcement at Indianapolis two weeks ago has prompted speculation that the former FNippon champion could be about to jump ship.

The situation is further clouded, however, by the gradual elimination of possible replacements for either de la Rosa or Verstappen. Jean Alesi has already decided to stay with Prost for a second season, while both Alex Wurz and Ricardo Zonta are now understood to have confirmed testing deals for 2001. Of the drivers linked to a possible seat at the Orange-backed team, only F3000 champion Bruno Junqueira remains available, although he is thought certain to join Chip Ganassi's CART outfit next year.

Pedro Diniz has also been mentioned in connection with Prost for 2001, but appears to be torn between signing for the French team or remaining with Sauber. Both teams are thought to covet the Brazilian's Parmalat sponsorship

Yo creo que cuando ficharon a Panis por BAR-Honda, durante el 2000, también ahí se le fue a PdlR un asiento mejor que el que tenía en ese momento.

Por cierto, que si rechazó aspirar a mejorar de equipo (hablar, negociar... lo que sea) porque le dijeron en Arrows que seguiría el año siguiente... Ahora con distancia me parece demencial.

en F1 estan probablemente los mejores sin embargo el nivel medio de la parrilla F1 ha disminuido en los ultimos años, para mi ese nivel medio en estos momentos es inferior al del DTM y Le Mans

En serio, en general, la F1 se esta convirtiendo en mediocre por el rumbo hacia el abismo, que ha tomado. Si alguien no lo remedia, sepa Dios que veremos los proximos años. Yo, personalmete, me espero cualquier cosa.

Su formula es bien sencilla:

El nivel medio es muy inferior al del DTM y Le Mans. Y es basicamente porque se han invertido las tornas. Donde antes se pedía dinero para completar un programa ahora se pide calidad (DTM y Resistencia) y donde antes se pedía calidad ahora se pide dinero (F1).

Menos mal que cada vez más pilotos se dan cuenta que el mundo del motor no se acaba en una F1 travestida.

De la Rosa gets Prost test role

Pedro de la Rosa has joined Prost Grand Prix as test and reserve driver. After seven days of frustration which started with him losing his Arrows drive, the Spaniard will commence his Prost duties immediately, beginning with this week's test at Estoril.

He has a two-year deal, making him ideally placed to take a fulltime seat in 2002.

However the news fuels speculation that Pedro will graduate to the race team this season, at the expense of Argentine Gaston Mazzacane. De La Rosa's nationality makes him eminently suitable to team backer PSN.

Pedro's path into Prost was eased by his relationship with countryman and team director Joan Villadelprat, and by the close links his manager Julian Jakobi has with Prost. Jakobi used to manage Alain and latterly has been a key player in the French team's commercial strategy.

De la Rosa is delighted to have found a secure future so soon after being dumped by Arrows. "Signing for Team Prost is a unique opportunity that has come to me in the best of moments," he said. "Having signed for the 2001 and 2002 season, it makes me feel a lucky man indeed. I must say last week was tough, but things have finally been solved and I know that we're in the right path now.

"Working with Alain Prost and Joan Villadelprat is a great honour and was a definite factor for me to decide my future. I think Team Prost has great potential and from then on I'll do what I possibly can to help them in the development of the car. I will be testing at Estoril by the end of the week and the only thing I know is that I'm willing to drive again!"

"I am delighted to welcome Pedro to our team at the eve of a very promising season," said Prost. "I am confident that his experience in Formula 1, as well as the talent he has already shown in the past, will be an important support to Jean (Alesi) and Gaston (Mazzacane), and will contribute to the achievement of the team's ambitions."

At Monday's Michelin launch Prost confirmed to Autosport.com that he had approached de la Rosa last season, and that he felt that Pedro was the 'best man for the job.'

Dice literalmente que tenía un acuerdo por dos años, pero como ya dije, no llegó a firmar.

El trato era el primer año de probador, y el segundo de titular, aunque era un secreto a voces que Mazzacane le dejaría el asiento tras cuatro carreras. El argentino tenía un contrato con clausula de rendimiento (creo que era estar a un % del mejor tiempo de calificación de Alesi en las cuatro primeras carreras).

Siempre me quedó la duda de qué tal le hubiese ido a Pedro quedarse en Prost. Desde luego, el equipo´desapareció a final de 2001, y Pedro habría tenido que buscarse la vida. Pero el coche puntuó tres veces en manos de Alesi -un quinto y dos sextos- , y Frentzen también tuvo buenas actuaciones, aunque las pocas carreras de que dispuso le impidieron puntuar. Pero plantó el coche en la cuarta posición de parrilla en Spa, demostrando que en manos de buenos pilotos (Mazzacane, Burti y Enge no brillaron), el coche tenía potencial. Pedro hizo unas declaraciones muy positivas acerca del coche tras los tests de Estoril, y marcó buenos tiempos desde el primer día.

Pero la carrera de Pedro está llena de "y si...." que nunca ocurrieron...

Vale, no había sacado el tiempo verbal correcto de la frase, yo para inglés justito y con sifón.

¿Os habéis fijado que escudería que Pedro ha estado, escudería que ha desaparecido como tal o cambiado de dueños y de nombre?

Jordan, Arrows, Prost (si lo consideramos haber pasado por ellos), Jaguar y HRT. Sólo Sauber y McLaren han mantenido su nombre tras el paso de Pedro por sus copckit. A ver que pasa cuando deje Ferrari

Y Sauber a duras penas. Sí, ese resumen sólo viene a refrendar que Pedro no ha estado nunca en el sitio apropiado en el lugar adecuado. Sólo le faltó fichar por BAR y Toyota antes de su desaparición.

Y tuvo ofertas...

Por eso digo, de haber cerrado esos fichajes, probablemente estaríamos hablando de un piloto que entra en la historia de la Fórmula 1. No recuerdo ningún caso similar.
